News: Barr obliterates Trump's defense: 'He knew well that he had lost the election' ( www.cnn.com )

Former Attorney General Bill Barr on Wednesday undermined a key pillar of his old boss’ defense in the special counsel’s probe into 2020 election interference, telling CNN’s Kaitlan Collins that Donald Trump “knew well he lost the election.”

Something flipped a switch for him, could have been Jan 6 stuff but not entirely clear.

Criminal liability has a funny way of doing that. I suspect he's smart enough to not end up under the bus via defending or breaking laws for Trump in a losing legal battle.

They do present information in an entertainment format, but I don't see that as a bad thing. Cody & Katy do long and deep dives on subjects that might seem rather dry without the jokes and comments interspersed throughout. I think this makes it more, not less, accessible. The important thing to me is that their information is well-sourced and cited, and it is, (links and sources are available under each youtube video.)

I feel like we could use someone to fill the void left by Daily Show era Jon Stewart, as his tone and demeanor has changed a lot in his new show. He seems to be doing more of a serious presentation these days based on what I've seen of The Problem with Jon Stewart.

I wasn't aware this clown was running as a Democrat. His father would be ashamed of what he's become.

The only reason both he and his donor are noteworthy and capable of polluting our political discourse is because of inheritance; name recognition and wealth. Were they not born connected and wealthy we never would have heard about RFK Jr. or his terrible, hateful politics.

Trump has shown time and time again that he has no problem throwing anyone under the bus if it's in his interests. Choosing to trust him in a prisoner's dilemma is totally foolish, he's definitively proven himself untrustworthy.

Florida pension funds under DeSantis also took a bath because they invested in Russia, and because DeSantis gave control of Florida's pension funds to managers who donated to his campaign. Still they're using this as an excuse to push their culture war.

The modern GOP, it's corruption all the way down.

DarkGamer OP ,
@DarkGamer@kbin.social avatar

I believe any corporation that does not maximize profits for shareholders can be sued for dereliction of fiduciary duty. The problem here is that InBev was trying to maximize returns by promoting their beverage via a trans celebrity, which just happened to piss off bigots in the GOP. It was never about the losses to Florida's pension fund, which are minimal, (~$600k out of ~180billion.) I suspect DeSantis is just trying to scapegoat others for his mishandling of Florida's pensions and trying to vilify InBev for being inclusive, similar to what he tried with Disney.

I can only hope this will lead to corporations pulling support from the GOP.

DarkGamer OP ,
@DarkGamer@kbin.social avatar

DeSantis got to use his office to virtue signal far and wide for free in order to promote himself. So what if his behaviors are illegal and his claims don't stand up to the most basic of scrutiny? Once it goes to court and he loses, his behaviors are just going to cost the people of Florida dearly and harm them for the foreseeable future. Since the base he's catering to has the attention of fruit flies only the headline will be remembered and not causality or consequences. No skin off Ron's back. Perhaps if he were legally personally liable for the damage he's causing he'd give a shit.

Our very first mistake was not sending Nixon to prison. Set a bad precedent.

I agree with you in principle, however I don't know how we could have accomplished that without preventing Ford from using his pardon, causing a constitutional crisis.

That was a huge mistake. We are still dealing with the consequences of the failure of reconstruction. (Article is a few years old but still very relevant.) archival link

to say we're far and above every other country is insanity.

That depends on what domain and what metrics we're talking about. The US is by far objectively the wealthiest nation in the history of the world, which is nothing to scoff at. American military is far above and beyond the capability of other nations.

I wouldn't say we're a shining city on the hill that should be an example for everyone, we certainly have our issues, but we shouldn't overlook the domains where we are successful.

We're better off with systemic incentives in place to dissuade the next person considering Trump-like criminal behaviors.

Florida's pension fund only had a $50m position in InBev, for a loss of ~$600k. Not a lot out of a fund of $235 billion. Florida pension funds under DeSantis also took a $200m bath because they invested in Russia, and because DeSantis gave control of Florida's pension funds to managers who donated to his campaign. Still they're using this as an excuse to push their culture war and threaten InBev with lawsuits over less significant losses that Republicans caused.

"Sounds like Rudy flipped": Giuliani evades Jan. 6 target letter after meeting with prosecutors ( www.salon.com )

Former President Donald Trump received a target letter from special counsel Jack Smith in the January 6 investigation but his former attorney, ex-New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, evaded a similar fate after meeting with prosecutors....

[Guliani] was responsible for many things, but I don't think there was anything (at least currently publicly available) that he had part in planning January 6th.

@takeda He did, and there is:

“[Guliani] was definitely intoxicated,” Jason Miller, a senior Trump campaign advisor, said in a recorded deposition that was shown publicly for the first time on Monday during the Jan. 6 committee’s second public hearing. Giuliani wanted Trump to ignore the math and declare victory, immediately. “‘We need to go and say that we won,’” Miller recalled Giuliani saying, and that anyone who disagreed “was being weak.”

That same night, Trump’s campaign manager, Bill Stepien, had a tense meeting with the president in which he counseled him that “the votes were still being counted” and “it was too early to call the race.” Stepien had warned the president that key mail-in voting tallies coming in later on election night would likely weigh toward Joe Biden, as Trump had told his supporters not to trust mail-in ballots. Trump “thought I was wrong, and he told me so,” Stepien said.

The two scenes demonstrated a central thesis that the Jan. 6 Committee worked to convey to the American public on Monday: that Trump had plenty of advisers trying to convince him of the truth, but that he willfully chose to listen to those telling him what he wanted to hear.

Trump ultimately followed Giuliani’s plan and declared victory early in the morning on November 4, 2020, when the outcome of the election was still unclear. Trump delivered the speech from the East Room of the White House, calling the election “a fraud” and saying, “we were getting ready to win this election—frankly, we did win this election.” source

If Republicans didn't have double standards they wouldn't have any standards at all.

Republicans try to stop military’s electrification with mind-bogglingly dumb proposals ( electrek.co )

Several Republican representatives have proposed amendments to the National Defense Authorization Act to try to stop the Pentagon’s electrification. The proposals sound so mind-bogglingly dumb that they look like they were written by 19th-century Luddites or the fossil fuel industry itself....

Agreed. Also, electric vehicles are also much simpler mechanically speaking. They have fewer moving parts that can break relative to a modern gas engine. In-wheel electric motors wouldn't need a drive train, and would mean more room for other military stuff in vehicles.

I am shocked to see him diving below the margin for error beneath a democrat in a presidential toss up poll though!!

The margin of error for that poll is significantly <5% for the Biden face-off:

Latest survey conducted July 7-9, 2023, among representative samples of roughly 6,000 registered voters, with an unweighted margin of error of +/-1 percentage points.
