I don't see it happening. I've been in this boat for like twenty years. I don't have anyone who visits or hangs out with me. I only see my coworkers on the work floor, which is 1-2 days a week tops. Also, no one I know considers it an issue worth debating, let alone take action over. "Let them sort their own issues out".

If I want to get drunk with strangers, that's always an option, but it doesn't really interest me so I pass.

For every right-wing tough guy urging his crying son to “man up,” there’s a voice from the left telling him that to express his concerns is to take airtime away from a woman or someone more marginalized.

AutoTLDR bot managed to capture the very essence of this piece. All you need to know is in here. A two-pronged assault on masculinity with no obvious (non-toxic) way out.

Kyrgizion ,

The answer is almost certainly “because it was available” but that doesn’t exactly explain much.

I have three Greek tortoises and I hope my son will continue to care for them after I’m gone. Barring any sudden illnesses or accidents they should outlive me by a few decades.

My stepfather worked his entire life like a goddamn donkey. Even when he was supposed to be on pension his old boss still called him and he actually went and worked for him for free. Today, he’s practically crippled from all the physical strain he put his body though. His ex-boss, meanwhile, is rich as fuck and doesn’t give a fuck, while my stepfather has the absolute minimum pension and no healthcare.

My grandparents, on the other hand, had a very different story. My grandfather worked for the same employer for 50+ years, never missed a day, and had a decent wage AND a pension which he could access at 55 years of age. They were the last generation to receive their part of the social contract, but the generation of my parents and myself are completely missing out.

Small wonder that the young’uns have eyes in their heads and the werewithal to say “No way, not for me!”.

Kyrgizion ,

Even that isn’t complete protection. The government can always change the rules as they go. Not to mention a complete breakdown of society wouldn’t exactly do wonders for pensions and 401k’s either.

Kyrgizion ,

That’s not just in the US. I drive a car I can’t afford either, but it’s a company car so I don’t have to worry about it. It’s still kinda wild to me that asking for a few € raise is seen as impossible but giving me a 50K car isn’t a problem (I know, I know, tax breaks etc).

Any addiction can be broken (the mental part, at least). The real hard part is you have to truly WANT it. You can’t magically wish discipline into existence where there was none before.

That said, I can’t seem to get rid of mine, but I acknowledge that my underlying problem is a profound lack of willpower.

Zero-point Energy fields - reality Vs best description

According to quantum field theory, the universe can be thought of not as isolated particles but continuous fluctuating fields: matter fields, whose quanta are fermions (i.e., leptons and quarks), and force fields, whose quanta are bosons (e.g., photons and gluons). All these fields have zero-point energy.>...

Asimov wrestled with that one. Eventually he settled on a link to an alternative universe and syphoning energy from there, since that was arguably the least convoluted idea he could come up with for the problem.

What the hell is this shit? Instead of pushing for the return to traditional pensions, capitalism is celebrating the idea that Millennials and Gen Z may simply never be able to stop working. ( www.cnbc.com )

Traditionally, retiring entails leaving the workforce permanently. However, experts found that the very definition of retirement is also changing between generations....

Kyrgizion ,

I’m 40 and I’ve always “known” that there would be no retirement for “us”.

Consequentially, as the eternally wise Homer Simpson once stated; “my lifestyle is my retirement plan”.

I genuinely hope never to reach age 70 or over. I’ve known lots of old people in my life and the ONLY TWO who were somewhat happy were my maternal grandparents. And even they will soon have to deal with losing one another since they’re so old.

I don’t intend to go through all that. I’ll live what I can, as long as I can, and as soon as I can’t anymore, it’s exit left.

I doubt I’ll be the only one.

Texas Takes Attacks on Austin to New Level With “Death Star” Law ( slate.com )

The goal of Death Star is simple. The deeply conservative Texas Legislature wants to effectively deny cities—the state’s large Democratic-leaning cities, Houston, San Antonio, and Austin in particular—the ability to pass local laws and regulations in eight major policy areas: agriculture, business and commerce, finance,...

Burkina Faso President: 'Russia Is Family for Africa' ( www.youtube.com )

Russia and Africa share a familial bond due to their common history, including sacrifices made during World War II against Nazism. The speaker, representing Burkina Faso, expresses gratitude for Russia’s aid and condemns neocolonialism and terrorism. They urge African leaders to stand up for their people’s rights and not be...

Russia is literally holding your poorest hostage with the blowing up of the grain deal. But a puppet dances to their master’s tune I suppose.
