Doesn’t seem super well theorized to me. How exactly is porn playing into it? I do think the black and white language around metoo (yesallmen, believewomen) marginalized a lot of guys and contributes to this mindset. People who took it literally found the moral imperative it implied absurd and decided they’d need to find another narrative that they could be proud of themselves inside of. This is what they found when they looked. Invalidating all expert opinion as liberal makes it hard to bring sense into the conversation.

I do think apps like tinder are directly responsible for all the self published bullshit they read mixing terms from economics to analyze the ‘sexual marketplace’ and seem mostly premised on the idea that some woman owes you in particular because of statistics.

Some will, but when you are fighting to change norms language and optics are an important part of that. I think the movement would have been stronger had it avoided language implying gender essentialism.

I doubt it. Probably has to do with incomplete/bad education. I imagine we would average similarly badly when asked about other WWII era trivia.

I was educated in the US public school system in the mid 2010s and I felt like history class was 1/4 American slavery, 1/4 trail of tears, 1/4 revolutionary war, and 1/4 holocaust across middle and high school. Apparently that’s not normal, or the other kids weren’t absorbing anything.

You can block instances on Kbin— go to https://kbin.social/d/lemmy.ml then click the hamburger menu in the upper left and you can block it just like you can a magazine.

To check which ones you’ve blocked you click your name in the upper right > settings > blocked > domains.

You can also filter out specific words in settings (though I haven’t tried this out).

I think Reddit likely lost a lot of users who were exclusively Reddit users and didn’t use other social media. That might not amount to that many people total, but it does mean advertisers lose one of the more important demographics Reddit had to offer (since they can target the others more efficiently on other platforms anyway). Hope it still hurts their bottom line.

I had a prof in college that graded like this (in an intro level geology class lol) and it made the atmosphere brutal. I don’t remember the exactly distribution but top x% got As bottom x% got Fs.

Is it possible to imagine a universe with a different set of laws of physics?

Some people suggest the idea of a multiverse with each universe having a unique set of laws of physics governing it, but not many delve deeper into this. I was wondering if it was even possible to imagine a universe that is different to ours in this regard....

My partner is pursuing their PhD in Philosophy and studies history and phil of science and has dealt with this question a bit, so I’ll take a stab from that perspective.

My answer will rely on the possible worlds framework (a la Lewis) along with a tiny bit of knowledge about Newtonian mechanics.

Is it possible to imagine our world with different physics? Yes. Prior to discovering special relativity and quantum effects, we had newton’s Classical Mechanics, which was able to precisely and accurately describe and predict the movement of bodies in Euclidean space. So, if we can imagine our physics without the complications of curved space and quantum effects, we can imagine our world with an alternate physics that has been somewhat rigorously tested.

Additionally, we can easily imagine the world without the curvature of space and quantum effects (which should be clear by the fact that it’s not too long ago that we thought that was the best picture).

Classical Mechanics offers a working physics that just didn’t turn out to be correct in our (curvy) world. However, relying on the possible world’s framework, it would be easy to stipulate a possible world where Newtonian mechanics was true, or even a possible world where physics shifted from one set of laws to the other.

If we believe the evidence that physics could be otherwise, we might conclude that the laws of physics are relative to a world and a time (and, importantly to metaphysicians, not more fundamental than those two things).

I think a working physics lacking space-time or motion might be impossible to imagine.
