Someone gifted me Stellaris a couple of years back and honestly, I’ve played it off an on but always seem to bounce off it despite usually loving 4X games.

I’m not sure Star Trek branding is going to be enough to pull me in if the core gameplay is as slow as Stellaris, but I guess it’s all going to come down to price. If anyone needs me in the meantime I’ll be starting a new Stellaris campaign and trying to be more enthusiastic about it this time round!

It does feel very quick, given how long they spent teasing the two of them together. This was one of my problems with s1 as well, starting off character arcs and then wrapping them up way too soon (M’Benga’s daughter, for example).

Ok I love musicals so was definitely looking forward to this one. Did anyone else find it a little disappointing?

There was a bit too much moping and not enough joy, for me. That’s what makes a good musical episode so great, they can progress the plot while giving us an over-the-top fun time. But instead we had everyone singing a sad song and then one or two upbeat numbers, none of which were particularly catchy or entertaining. Like, if you’ve seen it even just once or twice years ago like I have you can probably remember some of the songs from the OG Buffy episode, but we watched this last night and by the end I genuinely couldn’t even remember the supposed grand finale song.

Boy band Klingons made the wait worth it, but I spent most of this episode spaced out a bit and just half-listening rather than watching which is the first episode I can say that about.

Shoutout to whoever decided to redo the theme music though, that was inspired.

Also the talk about bunnies has to be a reference to Buffy, right?

One of my favourite things about the Pike-light episodes we’ve been getting is Mount’s ability to still do all the acting he needs to do just with these little background reactions. Last week was a great example, this scene was another one. Such a charismatic actor.

Enjoyable episode, down a bit from the last few but at least we’re staying well ahead of ep1 in terms of quality. I am getting a bit of Kirk fatigue though, they have him technically meeting people for the first time in this episode but it feels like there’s no impact because we’ve seen them together in alternate timelines already.

Also, did I miss something or did they gather no proof whatsoever of the nebula aliens? I’m fine with Pike taking Uhura’s word for it in the climax but it just felt like there was a bit missing in between “taking the hallucinating person’s word for it” and “we now all accept that this was definitely happening and are writing scientific papers on it”.

Anyway now for my truly controversial opinion: I don’t like Pelia. The character is a great idea, but the execution is terrible.

I was excited at first, Carol Kane is great, but she just doesn’t work here imo. She’s hard to understand, every line seems to be delivered exactly the same, I don’t know she just seems like a joke character but without many jokes. It’s a little uncomfortable to watch.

Fully accept I am the only one who thinks this, though!

I used to get told off for doing this at a call centre job because it was too informal. Definitely would not fly in a first contact situation!

This episode was so much fun!

I’ll admit, reading the premise ahead of time (by accident because Liftoff app doesn’t do spoiler tags yet oops) had me worried as I find a lot of attempts at “humour” in modern Trek tend to try way too hard and are just uncomfortable to sit through. But this was genuinely funny! Turns out Ethan Peck has great comedic timing, and Pike’s background antics and reactions were fabulous. The dynamic between T’Pring’s parents was a bit stereotypical but also extremely relatable.

Also really liked what they did with Nurse Chapel in this episode. Her pain and desperation helped balance the episode and make it something more than just funny hijinks. The feelings of regret and survivor’s guilt, the desperate need to fix something that wasn’t even your fault, grief over losing (at least partially, in this case) someone you love. So many complex emotions shown on screen at once, all by one character, and entirely believably, was not something I expected from a “haha funny Spock” episode.

Completely agree. Just rewatched this one recently and somehow it seems to hit harder every time. I’m not a parent, and have no real relationship with mine, but the story and acting are so superb they briefly make me realise what that might be like.

Really enjoyed this episode, it didn’t make the most sense at times but made up for it with an extremely disturbing core concept. And there is comfort in the idea that even without a significant portion of our memories, we’re still “us”.

I’m confused about one thing though and maybe I just missed something so someone can enlighten me. If the palace is so well-protected that just literally being inside it for ten minutes is enough to completely reverse the memory loss, why was Pike first affected by it while standing in the palace? Is it just that they weren’t in there for very long during their first encounter with Zac, and the symptoms caught up with him, or did I miss something about how that worked?

Interestingly, I have two Lemmy accounts and hadn’t set any languages in either at first. Until I noticed one of my accounts couldn’t see certain posts, and was advised to do the multiple language thing. Why it only affected the one account I have no idea, but it’s definitely worth explicitly setting this just in case.
