EV firm Fisker files for bankruptcy months after it stopped making the Ocean

No word on parts, warranty, or, most crucially, software updates in the future.

Apple reportedly plans a return to chasing thinness in its hardware designs

Thinness is good, as long as it doesn't come at the expense of other things.

https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2024/06/apple-reportedly-plans-a-return-to-chasing-thinness-in-its-hardware-designs/?utm_brand=arstechnica&utm_social-type=owned&utm_source=mastodon&utm_medium=social

@arstechnica trying to chase thinness is literally only relevant if you have a big ass 80s phone that needs a backpack.

I don't think anyone cares if something is 5 or 8mm or even 10mm, if it gets over 10-15mm some people may complain that they can't fit 2+ phones into their designer jeans.

Personally, I'd rather have literally the formfactor of a brick with a month battery life than something that will turn to dust if I sit down with it in my pocket, or cuts my cheek if I hold it to my ears 🤷

Tech giants form AI group to counter Nvidia with new interconnect standard

@arstechnica interesting, Google has had its own internal standards for this purpose for almost a decade, I suppose they're going to bring that into this working group? It would be fascinating, the current tech they have allow you to essentially create coherent low-latency clusters spanning the entire planet, since it supports fiber interconnects, and optical circuit switches, meaning you can reconfigure the pod in any 'shape' you want. the public TPU V5p pods should already have this available

@arstechnica yay it's finally released! been using it for around half a year, it's been pretty smooth sailing, loving the battery life on it, and the round smooth shape easily fits in any pocket, also the "0.5x zoom" large angle camera is nice, I do miss the zoom camera on this thing but obviously that's what you'd get the pro version for. Also good to note that, unlike the pro, this one doesn't have the infrared thermometer AFAIK (at least I couldn't find it in my version)

Microsoft developing MAI-1 language model that may compete with OpenAI—report

In project headed by former Inflection chief, MAI-1 may have 500B parameters.

@arstechnica parameters is one thing, actually being smart is another. In some way these LLMs are like people; each one is unlike the others, better at some things than others. As much as we like to throw around numbers and benchmarks, I would really just like to test it in order to judge. 500B is quite a bunch of parameters, there have been smart models at twice that, half that, and a tenth of that. we'll see how it goes.
