Not sure how that is really going to help.

In theory a person with medical debt would be more likely to get the loan if credit agencies ignored the debt but without considering the debt the new loan may not be something they can actually afford. If the debt was paid then it likely wouldn't affect their ability to afford new debt and ignoring it makes more sense.

Maybe we could address why people are going into medical debt instead of trying to ignore it so people can take on new debts?

Events don't have to happen at the capital. Local governments could have problems. We'd have fewer problems if Republican leaders were more willing to throw Trump under the bus instead of trying to court his base.

5.56, typical rounds for ARs, aren't high caliber. In many states it's illegal to hunt deer with that caliber because it's under powered. Who told you it's high powered?

People absolutely use "high capacity" mags when these laws say more than 10 is too high. Take something like a Glock handgun typical capacity there is 15 to 17. For a modern rifle capacities of 20 to 40 is extremely common. For ARs the standard capacity is 30. Certainly any rifle anyone would consider for self defense is going to have mags larger than 10.

Overpenetration is a concern for any round a person would use for self defense. That includes 9mm and buckshot. Using 5.56 or 300 blk isn't actually that much more dangerous when just about anything is going through a bunch of wall if someone misses. And 5.56 might actually stop sooner than a slower moving handgun round because ballistics do weird things.

[Analysis] National Rent Control? It’s Closer Than You Think. ( www.youtube.com )

A historic wave of tenant organizing is on the verge of winning renter protections that would be attached to federal loans—affecting 1 in 4 apartments. But Greystar, Blackstone, and AvalonBay are spending millions to block it....

Big if true and I'll only believe it when I see it in action. Given that this would affect the income of companies making bank on loose regulations I would expect a lot of lobbying and campaign contributions over it. Maybe they'll let enough regulation in to fuck over landlords with only a few properties.

We don't necessarily need rent control as much as we need controls on what companies can buy to turn into rental or temporary housing. These companies and investors have been buying up property that were residential housing to then turn into rentals or put it up on air b&b. That then reduces available properties for actual people and thus raises the cost of properties/rent. Sometimes they just sit on it or expect it to flip it with some minor updates but nothing costly for them. That also increases prices. Also what is needed is investment into building lower income housing rather than more "luxury apartments" which often just involve putting a fresh coat of paint in old units.

If there were more properties on the market there would be fewer renters and lower housing costs in general.

Yes, a lot of infrastructure is fucked and needs replacing. Bridges, pipes, roads, dams, energy grids, all of it. We also need a lot of new infrastructure to have renewable energy and prepare for climate change related problems.

The program could also help people that need work or are under employed. It may be a question as to how much of an improvement this work might be for the under employed but any work would probably be better for the unemployed.

Privacy is a factor and part of the basis of the argument in Roe but that idea doesn't really hold up if you consider abortion to be a crime. An example in the medical setting is how some injuries have to be reported. It would be reasonable to point out how substance abuse isn't necessary reported but I doubt prolife people like that policy either.

To be clear I am pro-choice and there should be federal protections if not a full blown amendment for abortion, birth control, and other medical procedures but currently those protections are limited. That is how some states think they can do shit like demand medical records from other states. In general the idea of protections for privacy seems to be more limited than it should be.

For this particular issue the obvious thing outside of what should be legal would be that the states have no reason or jurisdiction to know anything. If there was a crime going on in that other state the demanding state has no grounds to charge anyone with anything. No crime was committed in their state even if a crime did happen. Said crime would be the business of the state in which the crime took place.

The background check is a federal thing with federal laws regulating it. The states are supposed to report things to the feds for things to show up on the NICS. There have been failures related to the NICS due to states or military not reporting things to the feds but they don't really report stuff to other states for the background check. And if states are asked about things it's the feds doing the asking. The FBI manages the background checks and NICS.

There is also a big difference between states sharing info about convictions and a random out of state police department, ag, or governor asking a hospital to violate HIPPA for something that isn't a crime in that state.

It's going to be appealed and struck down. The judge's reasoning is just incorrect.

There is no tradition of regulating "uniquely dangerous features". Capacities over 15 rounds aren't even "uniquely dangerous" and are in common use.

Having a license/requirements just for ownership presents a number of problems. How many other rights do you need to take a test for? Here there isn't really a plan nor funding. The cops are supposed to handle it, somehow, but it's questionable if it will actually be shall issue. I very much expect the process to have the same problems as 'may issue' carry permits.

I almost wonder if the judge made a this shitty of a ruling just to get it to the supreme court.

Mods might want to consider which sources are blacklisted or whitelisted. Fairly straightforward thing to automate and could cut down on things that are clickbaity or just misinformation. A biased source is one thing but a site that mainly talks about lizard people or aliens probably isn't reputable.

Might not be worth it to create a list or automation until manual moderation gets too much as that would be a chore to create.

I'm a pro-gun leftist. Yeah, some liberals are coming for guns. That's what they're talking about when they call for bans. It's kinda hard to miss.

Saying "no one is coming for your guns" is as disingenuous as OPs link. Trying to make that kind of claim will only convince pro-gun people you're clueless or just the "I'm pro-2a but" fuddy type.

Because the average person isn't feeling an improvement when cost of living is up and wages are questionable. Wall Street bros doing ok isn't really representative of most people.

If the argument is that it could be worse well sure but that's not that glowing of an achievement. Not when trying to appeal to the general public.

Terms vary state by state. Restrictions may apply.

Some states are weird about letting their citizens get abortions or be trans. Some states are very iffy about what you own to defend yourself. Civil forfeiture is a thing that can exist. Weed isn't legal federally. Cops have qualified immunity.

I didn't really see them trying to run someone else. I mean they would of Biden decided he was done with all the bullshit but seems like he isn't.

borkcorkedforks ,

I don't know maybe Harris is going for that 2+ term loophole.

If we say for min that Biden wins the national Spanish lottery and decided to retire they'd probably just end up run Harris. I'm pretty sure that's how we ended up with Biden as the nom. There would be an actual primary at that point though so maybe someone else would end up with the nom. Maybe Hillary and Trump can have a rematch.

There are underlaying problems like the war on drugs but the cartels in Mexico are more than just drug businesses now. They branched out into other illegal and legal industries then enforces things with paramilitary like gangs.

Now the US going in probably isn't a good idea but mostly because Mexico isn't really asking for us to. Mexico isn't really planning on a peaceful approach either. We are talking about people who use extreme violence and terrorism to achieve their goals and maintain power.

borkcorkedforks ,

I don't know international law but it seems a bit like an act of war to send in troops without the request. Right now Mexico is basically sending in their own military like units. They actually had to build one up from scratch due to corruption in existing police and military orgs. At some point I could see it being in the US interests to give aid if requested but yeah just strolling over the boarder 1864 style is probably a bad idea.

borkcorkedforks ,

Interesting hot take. Would you like the current crop of politicians to write that when they have trouble passing regular laws?

borkcorkedforks ,

A lot of laws about weapons aren't really about anything actually happening or dangers. Often it's about perceptions people have or actually about trying to target a group politicians don't like.

That's how bailsongs and switch blades got restricted in a lot of states. Also why suppressors or short barreled firearms are regulated like hand grenades.
