Be me

American

See shitty right wing government doing shitty right wing things.

Sigh.

I bet I know who's behind this.

Google the history of that government.

Greece was the first proxy war of the Cold war, with the US backing the Greek Monarchy, who were ultimately the victors.

We probably ran similar propaganda and right-wing violence campaigns there as we did across the global south.

What a fucking surprise.

Happy July 4th everyone.

Texas is getting more and more purple every year, and by God if they aren’t doing everything possible to piss off anyone to the left of Mussollini. It would be maximum lols if they accidentally caused Texas to go blue for the first time in God knows how long.

I’m in CA, so I’m no stranger to seeing encampments. Basically, camp sweeps are about the most pointless exercise in futility you can get up to. They just pop up in the next place, and the next place, and the next place, over and over and over. We’ve been trying this dumbfuck plan of “make the homeless so miserable that they stop existing” for decades now, and the problem has only continued to worsen. I’m kinda starting to think it doesn’t work. What does work, though, is housing, and lots of it.

I don’t think we should be worrying about busting up homeless camps until we can actually put these people up somewhere instead of playing stupid fucking games of “I don’t care where you go but you can’t stay here,” over and over every three weeks. We need to be focusing on building an a large supply of affordable housing, commie blocks even. I am, unironically, down for the Pacific states to just start laying down tracts of commie blocks. If your eyebrows just went up, let me point out that:

  1. Commie blocks are better on every front than just having massive homeless encampments.
  2. Given the choice between homelessness and a commie block apartment, a lot of people would gladly take the apartment. Not to mention a lot of East Europeans will speak fondly of having lived in them.
  3. If you’re worried about the aesthetics of a commie block, maybe really take a moment to ask yourself if that makes any kind of sense, but in particular on an ethical level. What’s your problem with them, exactly? They don’t vibe with the US’ aesthetic pattern of [checks Google street view] building soulless beige-brown concrete and steel cubes? And is it really a worse look than massive homeless camps? And is that more important than getting these people housed?

In my experience, in the white collar world, corporates really don’t think twice about paying for this stuff.* In fact, they’d really prefer that you just use the company card instead of blasting stupid bullshit like this on social or making yourself sick. This person’s boss probably thinks they’re fucking insane.

*If you’re blue collar, you can usually get fucked. If they do much as buy you a Costco hotdog and soda, they’re going to complain and hold it over your head. Little Caeser’s hot-n-ready pizza is the definition of spoiling your workforce in that world.

Not only that, but I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s more job satisfaction in retail than teaching. Teaching in the US is a dog, and I’m frankly amazed they haven’t already run out of teachers.

Yeah, you got me

Eh. I graduated in 07, and literally the only time I’ve ever used cursive was when I was made to. Cursive itself seemed kinda pointless, as every year I was taught cursive, I was told “it won’t be required this year, but they won’t take your work unless it’s in cursive next year”. Then, next year, they said the same thing, and again and again, and tomorrow never came. At some point it just felt like this vestigial organ, especially as it becomes more and more apparent that anything important was going to happen in print (tests, government forms, emails, etc etc). And we didn’t have laptops in our classrooms. So, from my point of view, it’s more that it’s utterly obsolete than it is to do with computers invading the classroom.

Good. Tbh, my concerns with school are a lot more boring, and if some foaming reactionary was running on a circus platform, there’s no way I’d vote for them.

I have to agree, Strange New Worlds is, hands down, the best Trek this side of TNG. I couldn’t get into Discovery because it’s too E D G Y. Like, it feels like the showrunners discovered emo a generation too late, and the whole show should basically be a linewire music video set to Three Days Grace or Linkin Park. It’s fucking insufferable, I just can’t reconcile that with Star Trek.

Lower Decks and Prodigy are both great, but don’t feel like real entries into the Trek universe and therefore are just kinda time sinks to keep you from being alone with your thoughts and reflecting on the void.

Picard was also sort of in the same boat as Discovery in terms of Edge while also trying to be a murder mystery and also a 'Member Berries special.

Cute name, but does it have a realistic shot of going anywhere?

Tbh, we have so many migrant workers and people in California, let alone LA, that a fourth bus is still barely a blip. It’s just kinda sad that they thought this would be a cool stunt, and to be clear, I mean sad in the same sense as a German making a joke. What’s next on their pathetic prank list, are Abbott and DeSantis going to come and re-arrange Newsom’s mail? Come and drink some of our tap water without us noticing? (spoiler alert: don’t, it tastes horrible) Oh, maybe they can send us some completely blank postcards.

I feel bad for them to be such sad people that they thought this would be a cool win. And I feel bad for the folks they did this to, but hey, consolation prize, you’re no longer in TX or FL.

I think of stuff like this when people say that the point is cruelty. Honestly, how much more work can anyone believe that they’re going to squeeze out of heat exhausted workers by denying shade and water breaks? It doesn’t make sense as a productivity measure, but some dip shit manager is still going to make people do it just to flex on them.
