From www.cnn.com/2022/11/14/business/…/index.html:

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos plans to give away the majority of his $124 billion net worth during his lifetime, telling CNN in an exclusive interview he will devote the bulk of his wealth to fighting climate change and supporting people who can unify humanity in the face of deep social and political divisions.

Though Bezos’ vow was light on specifics, this marks the first time he has announced that he plans to give away most of his money. Critics have chided Bezos for not signing the Giving Pledge, a promise by hundreds of the world’s richest people to donate the majority of their wealth to charitable causes.

So he made a vague promise, “light on specifics”, that he would give away “most” of his money to fighting the climate change that is exacerbated by his lifetime’s work and the social divisions that he has worked relentlessly to entrench? He could fight social divisions by treating his employees well and allowing them to unionize, but Amazon is notorious for mistreating its workers, it profits off forced labour in China, and he has fought dirty against unionization at every opportunity.

Forgive me for suspecting he’s full of shit with his vague and noncommittal promise, after a self-serving lifetime of aggressively doing the opposite.

They come after a Washington Post poll gave Trump a 10-point lead over Joe Biden, who beat him in 2020, in a notional 2024 general election matchup.

And yet somehow this idea of government by a fascist dictator seems to really appeal to a lot of people. It’s hard to understand why people find this so attractive. I guess it’s selfishness and the mistaken notion that he would work for their interests.

It’s depressing how reactionary many men are, even the young ones.

No one is saying other lives are worthless. You’re attacking a made-up position.

That’s what it says, but it’s just marketing. Capitalists don’t actually believe in fair competition. They believe in themselves having all the stuff, not anyone else, by any means necessary.

Pay us like you pay yourself, and we’ll come in to your shitty office.

Rather because techbro assholes are creating it in their own image.

I couldn’t tell what I was looking at until I searched for an explanation. All I could see was a person falling into some water past a floating ice cream stall. It’s supposed to be a beach:

And that’s exactly why the USA will never get ranked choice voting.

The Fox GOP debate melted down when the word “climate” was mentioned ( www.motherjones.com )

After the network showed a clip of a young conservative activist saying that climate change was the number one issue for young voters, Fox News moderator Martha MacCallum asked for a show of hands in response to her question, “Do you believe human behavior is causing climate change?”...

Nothing eco about today’s GOP. It’s just regular fascism.

I’m glad we’re seeing more journalists willing to call out this fascism for what it is. Trump wants anyone who hinders him killed. It will not be surprising if he succeeds in getting some people killed.

gig workers are being unfairly terminated, or “deactivated,” as the companies call it.

I, for one, loathe our new techbro overlords.

Is there a really good free Git GUI for Linux? I have tried a bunch of them but all the good ones seem to be closed source and paid.

floofloof ,

I have used Mercurial at work for years, and Git for side projects. I screw up far less often in Mercurial, and its tools are easy to use. It’s strange how thoroughly Git took over.

floofloof ,

Will it run on Linux? I use Sourcetree on Windows but didn’t think it was available for Linux.

floofloof ,

Thanks. I’ll check it out.

Yes, astroturf is fake grass, and astroturfed movements are fake grassroots movements.

It’s appalling that this is even a question. Children don’t need better terms for working at the abattoir, the garbage dump or the sawmill; they need not to be working in those places.

floofloof ,

The need for capital to find ever cheaper labor to exploit, accelerated by Republicans. I was trying to avoid loaded terms like “civilized” and “third world”, but it does not make the USA look good at all.

floofloof OP ,

Comically evil is at least funny. But it’s not at all funny how these people just look at every single issue and choose the malign option.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liberalism

Liberalism is not what people in the USA understand by the word (i.e. anything left of pretty far right). If you hang out with socialists you’ll find they’re not fond of liberals, because liberals are capitalists. This meaning of the word is why the most damaging, ultra-capitalist, right-wing economic policies of the past 50 years are known as neoliberalism.

DeSantis lamented the company’s “political agenda,” as embodied by hiring spokesmodel Dylan Mulvaney, as having cost shareholders, especially in Florida, where the state seems to have held stock for months as the state’s politicians and others on the right mocked the brand and helped to erode its market share.

It is impressive how consistently the “party of personal responsibility” finds someone else to blame for the consequences of its own actions.

floofloof ,

He’s right about the fascism thing, but for the wrong reasons.

The courts need to act quickly though, because obviously he will stall for time in the hopes he’ll be president again and able to pardon himself.
