I had basically this exact conversation with my supervisor last week. She was like, "I like to have ___ done by Thursdays," because I was sick on Thursday and said I'd do it first thing Friday morning. So I said, "Ok, so is the deadline for this task Thursdays then? Because that's never been communicated to me." And she said, "Well, I like to have it done by Thursdays." Holy fuck, JUST TELL ME HOW MANY PIECES OF FLAIR I NEED.

Anyway, I'm looking for a new job because I can't work in a place that wants to penalize people for not living up to expectations they didn't know existed. My entire review (first one in 2 1/2 years) was a series of "Remember this thing from months ago? Well we didn't like how you did that but we never said anything and just sat on it until now." Cool, thanks for setting me up to fail, appreciate that.

Exactly. I've always known my boss was great at most of her job but not very good at people management (because I don't think she particularly wants to do it), but being blindsided with things it's too late to even address was so demoralizing. What the heck am I supposed to do about a phone call from December about an issue that's been long since resolved?

Giraffes are my favorite animals. I have a zoo membership at least 50% because it means I can just go hang out by the giraffe habitat and watch them for a while, so I’m basically an expert and can say that this baby is perfect and amazing and I would die for it.

I know! Giant and knobby and gangly but then they have those Disney eyes and lashes. They’re the best.

Every Christian influencer who got married at 20 and is now trying to convince everyone to buy their PDF “book”.

Creep by Radiohead and Creep by TLC both kind of work here. Huh.

For the record, I’ve never worked anywhere that this was the case. I mean, yes, if you get hammered and act stupid, that’s obviously going to impact your job (probably, unless you work in the kind of place where your boss is right there with you), but pretty much everywhere I’ve ever worked, people came if they felt like it, had a drink or two and some snacks, and not one person ever gave it another thought.

Caveat: I’ve worked for the government for my entire career. It might be different in more sociopathic industries.

Yep. One of my friends works in sales and has worked from home for 3 1/2 of her 4 years with her current company. She’s in the top 10 performers out of 250-ish people in her division and her company is going to lose her if they stick to the demand that people return to the office. She’s waiting to see what happens, but she’s already had recruiters put out feelers once the tentative plan got out, and there are other top performers ready to jump ship too.

Seriously, they want tradwives, although most of them don’t actually want to support that lifestyle, they just want a bangmaid that’s also somehow independent enough to earn a living.

There are a ton of fundamentalist Christian women who hustle on social media constantly. Their husbands don’t want them to have a “real” job because that might undermine him, but they sure as shit want their wives earning money. Selling classes on how to be a homemaker, ebooks, clothes, doing sponsorships, whatever they can get, these women are doing, because their husbands don’t actually make enough to support a family. They just act like that doesn’t count as a job, so they’re still totally traditional and biblical or whatever.

Bill Maher postpones return to the air, the latest TV host to balk at working during writers strike ( apnews.com )

Bill Maher has delayed returning to his HBO talk show during the ongoing strike by writers and actors, a decision that follows similar pauses over the weekend by “The Drew Barrymore Show,” “The Talk” and “The Jennifer Hudson Show.”...

frickineh ,

He didn’t balk. He was ready to go until people were mad about it. Fuck that guy, and fuck this headline for making it sound like he cared.

frickineh ,

Most places I’ve worked, people would just wonder why you were so inefficient that you needed the extra time to do your job. Like, yeah everyone else does this shit in 40 hours, but this guy keeps showing up on Saturday, so he’s either fucking around during the week or he’s bad at his job. Anywhere that would think it was a good thing wasn’t the kind of place you wanted to move up, it was the kind you tried to leave as soon as you could. Because they were run by the kind of morons who think the appearance of working harder was more valuable than actually doing something useful.
