On the end of Discovery

I have mixed feelings about Disco ending. I really dug the first season’s look at a Federation at war, and following the person who arguably set that war in motion dealing with her culpability. Add to that a ship that is part weird science lab, part haunted house. And yeah, I could live with the Klingon redesign....

Discovery also seems to employ the dimensional technology that the pod from the future employed on Enterprise, being much bigger on the inside

gnuplusmatt ,

the cruel irony is that the only reason that Kelpiens are even spacefaring is because Discovery intervened the previous season, in that regard Discovery caused the burn

gnuplusmatt ,

Yeah but the season 3 finale took it to a new extreme

I liked the “He looks like Tom Paris” back and forth, I’m glad they didn’t do something hokey like he’s Tom Paris’ cousin or something. I liked the flashback showing Mariner as the tag along first year, worked better than just telling us in the previous episode, that flashback probably should have been attached to episode 9.

I kept expecting William Boimler to show up before the end of the season, guess they’re holding onto that thread for next year

I assume it was because you were tracking down instances of Klingons hugging?

AGIMUS’s drones were reminiscent of the drones from Arsenal of Freedom

I was hoping for Prime, but their kids offering is pretty anemic compared to Netflix. With the cost of Netflix it only gets a few months a year in our household too

gnuplusmatt ,

These drops have been so good. I’ve managed to get all the hero ships in regular size, even the Cerritos which I thought I’d missed my chance on. I missed regular DS9, but I am tempted by the XL in this drop…

buy the discs to show Paramount you’re interested?

gnuplusmatt ,

This is one tangible draw back to being on the fediverse instead of mainstream social media - no one at companies are going to be watching or considering engagement here. So if it sort of locks us out of fan noise. I guess keep streaming it

The Original 4400 got cancelled on a cliffhanger. I refuse to watch the reboot

gnuplusmatt ,

that diagram is amazing, needs to be updated for Coda tho - which would put lines everywhere…

gnuplusmatt ,

I enjoyed Coda, but if there was a time to take a hatchet to characters and storylines, that was the time. I understand why they did what they did.

gnuplusmatt ,

The video is from Paramount Plus, who don’t currently have the rights to Prodigy, even though the parent company does. If they included it in their promotional material it would effect their ability to either sell those rights to someone else or write the show off for tax purposes.

It’s convoluted and stupid, but running your streaming service as a separate entity is how all the studios have it rigged up. Accounting ftw

I was similar, almost monthly releases over the years kept me engaged.

I would add to those recommendations the Cold Equations Trilogy and if someone enjoys that, Mortal Coil (as a prequel to cold Equations) and The Light Fantastic as a sequel.

“Computer! Taffy, honey, shrimp, soda, corn, steak, chicken nugget, crispy lemon rock candy, chili, gravy, chocolate sundae! Hot!”

When millions of dollars are at stake in the streaming wars, and I see dozens of near-zero-cost posts about how “this is exactly the Trek all us old Trek fans have been waiting for dudbebrodudes!!

Yes corporate shills are coming to lemmy of all places to astroturf, I bet they’re all over usenet and dialup BBS as well

I feel like Sean is the kind of guy I could geek out with

In a good way, they took a lot of scifi things that have been done in other trek and remixed them into a very good episode. It had shades of Voyager’s “Faces”, DS9’s “You Are Cordially Invited”, Data getting his emotion chip in generations. These are things we’ve seen, but explored in new and pleasing ways.

I feel like these bread crumbs of context to “Amok Time” are going to make a classic episode better, but for a lot of newer fans there could potentially be no pay off if TOS can’t hold their attention.

Some fan discourse I’ve seen on mastodon suggested “oh look there’s the AR wall” like its some kind of bad thing, but I don’t see this as any different to saying “oh look CGI character” we all know it, you don’t need to point it out.
