jonne , to xkcd in xkcd #2948: Electric vs Gas

When I rented I only had street parking. In that situation an electric car is just another thing to manage. If you've got a garage to park in, sure, even with a basic 220V outlet.

And the cop is going to get charged for lying, right?

jonne , to Work Reform in Union leader endorsing Biden: ‘We’re not gonna waste a lot of time’ on Trump supporters

You'd think of all the people that could persuade members to change their minds it would be unions. Just point out who was running the DOL under Trump and who is running it now. Same with the Supreme Court, which is currently taking a case that could just outlaw the NLRB.

jonne , to Work Reform in The Billionaire-Fueled Lobbying Group Behind the State Bills to Ban Basic Income Experiments in the U.S.

I think the main reason is that if you had an UBI, you’d be way more eager to join a union, strike, or quit a shitty job. They know their fortune is built on labour exploitation, even the supposed ‘tech’ companies.

jonne , to Personal Finance in Why is it that the more I earn, the higher percentage of federal withholdings they take?

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Progressive_tax

The withholding is calculated by extrapolating how much you’d owe in taxes if you earned this amount for every paycheck. If you know how much you’re projected to earn over the year, you could ask whomever handles your pay to adjust it to the correct percentage. Either way, come tax time it’ll be settled and you’ll either get back however much you paid in excess, or you’ll have to pay a bit extra at the end of the year.

jonne , to Work Reform in A billionaire wrote this letter to Google a year ago. How likely is that Google's layoffs and actions since then are at least partly because of this?

They’ve written one like that to every tech company. It’s probably just so they can repeat the conditions from before they got sued for colluding to depress employee wages. This has the same effect, except this time it’s not collusion, it’s doing their fiduciary duty because shareholders are demanding it.

jonne , to Work Reform in The data is in: Return to Office policies don't improve employee performance or company value, but controlling bosses don't care

Wasn’t this always just a way to do stealth layoffs?

jonne , to Work Reform in 'We have no rights.' Frustrated with California wage laws, Moonstone Bistro in Redding cuts lunch service

I bet rent takes a bigger chunk out of their business compared to wages, but you never hear these types complain about their landlord.

jonne , to Politics in Nikki Haley walks back Civil War comments after backlash

To them it’s woke history. A Republican from the north (eg. Chris Christie) might tell you it was the right answer, but if you’re from the South you can’t ever admit it.

jonne , to Politics in Michael Cohen Pulled Fake AI Court Cases for a Very Real Legal Motion

He only got the job with Trump because it’s the only place that would hire him. There’s that saying that definitely applies here: A’s hire other A’s, B’s will hire C’s.

jonne , to Politics in Manchin won’t seek reelection in West Virginia

Damn, that’ll turn his seat from basically Republican to actual Republican.

jonne , to Work Reform in The reason CEOs want workers to Return To Office is because they want you to quit

They don’t see workers as people, they’re a commodity like everything else.

jonne , to Sysadmin in Cloudflare Unveils Free Privacy-Friendly Replacement to the Annoying CAPTCHA System

I get it a lot when I’m using our work VPN (which shows up as an AWS IP address). I guess if you’re using a VPN or a less reputable ISP you’ll probably get stung more often.

jonne , (edited ) to Work Reform in UAW will not expand strikes at Detroit automakers after last-minute GM proposal

They don’t have to spend it all, you know. If they can reward corporations for negotiating in good faith by limiting the damage of the strike, they’re retaining leverage. They can still go full strike later, but it looks like it’s not necessary.

I’m sure the UAW knows what they’re doing.

Besides, if they were to hurt the corporations too much, they’ll end up hurting sales of American cars, giving foreign competitors inroads. China’s car workers aren’t unionised, so importing those cars hurts unions everywhere.

And it allows the strike fund to go a lot further too.
