@georgetakei When I was an ESL teacher, one of my colleagues organized the international students into a kazoo marching band. They marched all over the university playing Sousa marches. This was great fun. However, I don't think the students realized that this was not normal American activity.
@georgetakei As other social services have disappeared, libraries have become homeless shelters, after school day cares, and senior citizen centers, and play many other roles. I was in the Little Tokyo library (in LA, not far from skid row) when the young librarian was kicking a homeless guy out because he had promised not to come to the library when he was high. The guy was very apologetic. If bad things happen in libraries, it's because other necessary services are underfunded or nonexistent.
@arstechnica I have a 2018 Accord Hybrid. The auto braking and the "Road Departure Mitigation" features drove me nuts until I turned them off. It is kind of deep in the menus, but a lot of this stuff can be disabled. It still displays the BRAKE! warning, but it doesn't touch the brakes.
@rbreich Paywall. I looked for a sad emoji, but couldn't find it. These days the systems in place leave almost all creative people busking on virtual corners like subway musicians. I get that. But if I subscribed to everything I occasionally wanted to view or read, my whole retirement check would be gone before there was food on the table. It used to be that you could subscribe to a publication and get a selection of content. Now every writer, artist, or entertainer wants to be paid directly.
News flash: If you outlaw abortions, dictate what educators can teach in schools, and stop people from voting, you're not the party of "limited government."
