@georgetakei It's because of the hollowness with bits inside that in a vague sort of way could resemble the form of a bell complete with ringer.

A few years back we were traveling across the U.S. and as we passed through Indiana noticed a sign that said mangos 3 for a dollar. Wife and I thought that sounded good so we stopped at the farm stand. Low and behold what they called mangos were green bell peppers. Talk about disappointment.
