And don't forget to take your share of the national debt when you go.

Not the answer you're looking for but we just put a cap over our double chimney. Our area has terrible pollution problems and, although we liked having fires, we're happier not contributing to the area's bad air.

lettruthout ,

Agreed. The sense of depth (along the pads and into the water) really attract the eye. The "posing" of the Koi adds to the beauty. Well done!

Just guessing that this is to get the conversation off of Indeed, for whatever that is worth.

BTW: I use Signal to stay in touch with my far-away family. It's pretty nice. Rumor has it that it was originally built by the CIA (the US spy organization).

Years ago there were community gardens around the Seattle area. Are they still there?

So the the third photo is with the melamine cabinet removed? If so, you are so lucky to have found it now. That old outlet looks like it was shorting. Major fire hazard there. What does the back of the cabinet look like?

The old outlet should never have been buried like that. I’m not an electrician but my understanding is that the outlet should have been removed, the wires properly terminated (with caps or the like), the box covered with a plate cover, then the back of the cabinet should have had a hole cut into it so access to the cover was still possible with the cabinet in place.

Plus: what’s the deal with the blue box? Was it never properly attached to the wall? Did the original installer mis-cut the cabinet hole and instead improperly add a new box?

lettruthout ,

Great! I’d also explore properly attaching the blue box to the drywall, then using a box extender to cover the space taken up by the melamine. This way the outlet and cover can be securely attached.

lettruthout ,

I see mounting to a stud as something useful if the outlet is expected to get a lot of use. The “wings” of old work box might possibly dig into the drywall and become loose. In this case the use level will be low, right? Besides, attaching to a stud is work intensive, and I believe that using an old work box like this is up to code. I’ve used them a number of times.

EDIT: Also about the caps… I try to observe a “code plus” approach and wrap caps with friction tape (NOT the plastic electrician’s tape). That stuff will provide a little more protection for decades.

Our dog used to love jumping after balls at the beach. We’d do it often. I regret it now. In later life he developed major hip and leg problems. It took thousands of dollars to get him to where he could walk without much pain.

Another example of how patriarchy cuts many ways.

So the frame wasn’t fitting into the window? Or the screen material wasn’t fitting into the frame?

lettruthout ,

What material are you using for the frame? Wood? Aluminum?

I need to come up with a right angle gearbox (example)

I’m not a blacksmith and local hardware stores are coming up empty apart from selling a right angle drill attachment (which would work but they’re a bit pricey for my purpose).

The purpose: to hide a water valve (positioned upright) & control it from the other side of a wall. (back story)

My ideas so far:

  1. find a broken angle grinder that someone threw away (seems unlikely) & cannabalize the gears
  2. build right angle gears out of wood
  3. harvest worn down bicycle cassettes from the trash and orient them at right angles against each other. They are designed to mate with a chain, so I’m not sure how well it would work. The valve is only turned on/off a couple times per year, so maybe I can get away with it.
  4. go to a toy store and find a kid’s Capsela set (do they still make these?); though I imagine it might exceed the cost of a right angle drill accessory anyway and it would possibly break under stress.

What other tools or appliances should I look for on a dumpster dive which would likely contain a right angle gearbox?

lettruthout ,

You’ve already considered cutting a hole in the wall big enough to fit an arm through to reach the valve?

lettruthout ,

Maybe this plus camouflage the area by making it into a small bench or shelf. The enclosure would keep moisture out of the valve area. The camouflage would hide the enclosure, and if done well, would make the area easier to keep clean.

Yeah, nothing says “I love my country” like terrorizing innocent animals, triggering veterans, and leaving behind pollution.
