Republicans try to stop military’s electrification with mind-bogglingly dumb proposals ( electrek.co )

Several Republican representatives have proposed amendments to the National Defense Authorization Act to try to stop the Pentagon’s electrification. The proposals sound so mind-bogglingly dumb that they look like they were written by 19th-century Luddites or the fossil fuel industry itself....

These are unserious people and it is shameful that we (collectively) have elected them to positions of power. If you've ever wanted to run for office but doubt your own abilities, just take a gander at these nimrods.

Inflation is plummeting across America except in Ron DeSantis’ Florida ( www.alternet.org )

Americans learned Wednesday morning the rate of inflation nationally has dropped dramatically, to just 3% annually, down from over 9% one year ago.But not in Florida, which MarketWatch reports “has the highest inflation in the U.S.”For much of the year, even before his presidential campaign official...

Minnesota is cold in the winter, but the people are nice, the scenery is beautiful, and the politics is palatable. Just sayin'.

I'm voting in every election and sending my representatives letters are regular intervals.

I actually love it here in winter. It's so nice to put on a fire and be snug as you watch the snow fall. I grew up in Kentucky, and the winters there were just drizzly and chilly and gray and none of the fun stuff about winter but all of the yucky stuff. Not its best season, for sure.

It would be wise for them to do so. The sooner the writer strike is over, the sooner they'll actually have material to use to act.

Really need more information to make any kind of call. On the one hand, I'm reluctant to believe that a mayor just broke into someone's home for some petty theft. On the other hand, I'm also pretty suspect of any politician that claims that God is using them and their "persecution." What is this beef between the mayor and the council? Did the council have something to do with the trespassing/burglary charges? Like wtf is this story.

Georgia sounds like a wild fuckin' place to live. Was the mayor actually inside the home, I wonder? It doesn't really say. And why do they think he had intent to steal anything?

I use question marks, but really we can't know until more info comes out.

Georgia is a one party consent state. Get fucked, city council.

Maybe my threshold for shit is higher than normal, but my hope is that comments won't be removed but will be allowed to be downvoted into oblivion. At least when it comes to what could be considered a "political opinion." Of course there is a subjective line somewhere where a statement crosses from "political" to just "hate." But if a post is political, my hope would be that it gets to stand and be upvoted or downvoted, no matter how shit it might be.

If it were up to be, I'd draw the line at Contradiction, if you're trying to cultivate a serious magazine for thinkers.

wagesj45 ,
@wagesj45@kbin.social avatar

Politics is all about opinion. We all have different opinions on how society should be run. If we only allow fact-based reporting, this magazine might as well just be /m/news. Opinion pieces should definitely be allowed. Maybe limit it to external opinion pieces from established institutions to keep content quality high.

wagesj45 ,
@wagesj45@kbin.social avatar

Sure. There is a subjective line where they cross from "political position that is almost certainly bad and wrong" to "bait". Feel free to remove the bait, leave the bad takes.

What probably matters most is that the rules you establish needs to clearly state that there is a subjective line and that the user's have to accept that fact. There is no clear rule you can write and be objective.

wagesj45 ,
@wagesj45@kbin.social avatar

The line would be the same, but going in the opposite direction. :)

And who wants to go to a convention somewhere that normal behavior could get you harassed by the police? Or that could limit your medical treatment if you were to have an emergency? If I were a woman (or gay, or trans, or even just not a "traditional" straight cis person), I would be scared to step foot in Florida even for a work conference.

One thing I'd like to do is generate a podcast by scraping news articles, generating a script of two characters discussing the content of the article, then render it using an AI voice. With larger context lengths becoming a thing, I think it's doable now, especially with so much VRAM in one of these things. I'd also like to run a Stable Diffusion bot for the small chatroom I host for me and my friends. I'm sure ill be able to come up with some more uses as time goes on.

These highly organized local action groups are really concerning to me. We had a group of ultra conservatives running for our local school board as a group. Very worrying that they're organizing so effectively.

Sorry but we have to fall in line because that's exactly what the Republicans do every election. Part of the reason they were able to shift things so dramatically is because they fell in line and voted for Republicans they weren't in love with. Each one wasn't perfect, but normalized their shitty behavior and expectations grew and grew.

You can stand on principal if you want. There have been principals that I have stood on to my own detriment. But it will be to our detriment.

Lemmy.ml is blocking all requests from /kbin Instances ( kbin.social )

I discovered yesterday evening that Lemmy.ml is blocking all inbound ActivityPub requests from /kbin instances. Specifically, a 403 'access denied' is returned when the user agent contains "kbinBot" anywhere in the string. This has been causing a cascade of failures with federation for many server owners, flooding the message...

kbin is still in its growing pains phase. there are tons of little user experience items that need to be worked on. good thing is that @ernest is working hard on it.
