Not unless the one mod account is a managed account that is shared among multiple individuals.
For a big company, the one mod account could be just a placeholder and then the account is forwarded to cheap tech workers in India or Pakistan that use the account in blocks of hours every day. The one account could literally work round the clock 24 hours a day forever as it gets passed around between six or eight people. If you had eight people working on it round the clock, they would all be working on it at three hour increments each. Which makes it manageable for one person to focus their energy and do some sort of quality work. And because they are cheap labor, they don’t have to be in different time zones, you just force them to work at any and all hours of the day.
So instead of showing the community that you hired 20, 30 or 40 cheap tech workers to act as mods for pennies, it just appears as one two or three professional mods that magically seem to be capable of doing the work of multiple people.
It’s probably a fair price given the amount of manual labor involved. I didn’t think it would be much until I did the job on my own French doors earlier this year.
I know this is the DIY sub, but I would get a few estimates to have the floors redone wholesale. Trying to piecemeal it will almost certainly look worse than leaving it alone. You can rent a floor sander and DIY, but they’re tricky to run with no experience so you’re likely to leave the floor wavy. It’s also fairly expensive. Pros will be in and out in three days. If the stains are more than superficial, the options are going to be staining the floors darker yet or removal and replacement of the affected boards. Both of those will require refinishing and the latter is for sure a job for someone with experience. I agree with vodulas, that looks like water or pet damage that has already had an attempt at fixing it. Good luck, those are really pretty floors otherwise.
Are they actually independent of Reddit Inc? I had assumed a lot of those Reddit accounts moderating a huge amount of subs are actually Reddit employees.
Also those type of Reddit accounts often don’t do much actual moderating. They are the reason people complain about top mods that can’t be removed, never respond to modmail, etc. & will randomly wake up to make changes to the subreddit whenever they feel like it.
Few years ago I was invited to mod a small but growing community.
About a year later the sub founder (and other mods) just gradually disappeared.
When I brought this up, the top mod (a month later and without warning) removed everyone and asked to DM him if we wanted to continue being mods.
Every single person re-applied, but the inactivity continued.
When I looked at their profile, it turned out they were moderating dozens of subs, and according to the moderation log, I was the only one who actually performed any mod actions in the last 6 months.
This was when I took my leave.
Again, we're talking about a small ~20k community.
I can't even imagine the kind of clout chasing that goes around in large subs.
Watch a few YouTube videos on replacing these pieces. Maybe it will build some confidence in trying it yourself. It isn't a complicated repair and I've stopped calling contractors to do small jobs anymore. In the last year I've permanently wired in a backup generator to my house and installed a 220 receptacle for a new induction stove. I've always been afraid of electrical work but it was so easy and saved me $1000
Is the handyman actually saying he’s going to do what you’re suggesting? Or is he saying he’s going to do it right and ignore your bogus suggestion to fill the rot with putty?
He’s the one who suggested using putty in the first place. I had another person who quoted me $675 for cutting and replacing wood in the affected areas with PVC. Does that sound better? That does not include caulking or painting the whole door though.
That’s what I assumed was going to happen and is probably what I’d try to do on my own. Caulk and paint is easily done. PVC will last forever
$675 seems steep for that, but for them there’s also some opportunity cost – if they weren’t doing your job, they could be doing a different job for more money. So instead of saying no outright, they price it up to make it more worth their time.
I am by no means an expert, but that could be water damage. Are the boards there more raised than the others? If not, the previous owner may have sanded it down and stained over the top.
