Is Kubuntu with KDE backports or KDE Neon better?

tymon , to Star Trek in What "third generation" Trek is worth watching?

As a purist, I’d say watch them all and in release order, but if you really have to be choosy with your time, here’s a list of things you can skip (in my opinion):

  • Star Trek Into Darkness
  • Discovery (whole show)
  • Picard S1 and S2
  • Short Treks

I know suggesting skipping Discovery outright is going to be seen as… extreme, but I suggest doing so only if time is a crucial factor. It’s a dizzyingly uneven show with the lowest points of quality in all of Trek. However, it also has some incredible highs and some truly great characters, so if you find the time to watch it, you should. And I know I’m in the minority on this, but I found Short Treks to be unwatchable.

On the flip side, Lower Decks is incredible, and Strange New Worlds is good. The third season of Picard is excellent. Prodigy is a little weird but it’s got a lot of strength. Star Trek Beyond is also a surprisingly good movie.

LibraryLass ,

Dude I’ve seen TNG season 1 and Enterprise seasons 1-2. I know we both know it can get worse.

beefcat ,
@beefcat@kbin.social avatar

TOS also has some truly awful episodes, but it's pretty easy to ignore them.

I think the low points of DSC and PIC stick out for two reasons:

  1. Recency bias. It's been 15 years since I last watched Code of Honor, and I rarely even think about it except when it's time to make memes about season 1.
  2. Serialization. You can watch TNG, skip bad episodes like Code of Honor or Sub Rosa, and not really lose out on anything. But if you watch DSC and skip a bad episode, you blow a giant gaping hole in the over-arching story.

@ppb1701@kbin.social avatar

@LemmyStartNow I loaded violentmonkey edge addon and copy pasted the script in the add (teddit version) and it works. There is a bit a delay as it redirects. But I'll take the delay over using "dead"it. now just to figure how to automate it from ios safari....

@LollerCorleone

ppb1701 ,
@ppb1701@kbin.social avatar

Side note: I added UserScipt extension on Safari on my Mac and IOS and copied the script in on it's editer and it works there too. iOS does have a slight delay at the moment before it goes landing on what looks like a Reddit error page. I'm thinking it's where it is attempting to hit the script as it first loads to promote their app. Still works so woot!

Lemmy.ml is a hive of authoritarians. I'll be glad to not have to see their oppressive fascist fantasies here.

ReCursing ,
@ReCursing@kbin.social avatar

From what I hear, they're authoritarian communist, not fascist. Fascism is not just a synonym for authoritarianism, it's a specific economically far right authoritarian political position.

Onii-Chan ,
@Onii-Chan@kbin.social avatar

Same end result; oppression of the masses, rejection of human rights and personal liberties, concentration of power and corruption. Fascist, authoritarian communist, tomato, tomAto, as far as I'm concerned. Their ideologies all stand directly on the throat of freedom and I want nothing to do with anyone who believes total control of the people is a positive thing.

Machinist3359 ,

The distinction between a square and a rectangle is important, even if you don't like right angles and parallel sides. Fascism is a flavor of authoritarianism which is uniquely worse and focused on genocide.

Colombo ,

Fascism is not focused on Genocide. Even for Nazism, Genocide is only a (welcomed) byproduct.

iAmTheTot ,
@iAmTheTot@kbin.social avatar

On kbin (which you are) you can go to /d/theinstanceyoudontlike and there's a block button, just like every user page and magazine page.

ZickZack ,

Go to the relevant domain's front page (e.g https://kbin.social/d/kbin.social for kbin.social).
The URL scheme is "https://kbin.social/d/DOMAINHERE" assuming you are currently on kbin.social.
On the right in the sidebar you can see "Domain" and below that options to subscribe or to block.
Really it's the same thing as magazines, just that you generally don't visit the domain itself.

assbutt ,
@assbutt@kbin.social avatar

Gotcha, navigating to the domain itself is what I was missing. I still don't see an intuitive way to get there from say, a magazine.

I appreciate you taking the time to explain rather than just telling me to do something that I don't know how to do.

CarlsIII , to RedditMigration in New kbin user guide (preparation for impending wave of reddit migrants in July)

@Friend. Do you have any tips for being able identify which instance a post is from? The “@**.” part of an instance name is usually cut off, and often the post title will say “kbin.social” next to it even if it’s not a kbin post. The only way I know for sure to tell is to click on a post and scroll past all the comments.

Edit: for example, this post: https://kbin.social/m/[email protected]/t/100869/YSK-If-you-make-popcorn-in-a-pot-on-the

The post title clearly says kbin.social next to it. By he community label just says “youshouldknow.” It looks the same way from my home page: The only reason I know it’s actually on Lemmy.world is because I scrolled past all the comments, and also it’s in the url (which i am only looking at here because I copied and pasted the direct url for the post.)

Edit 2: I should probably also clarify that I am on mobile, so mouse-over’s are a no-go.

cendawanita ,
@cendawanita@kbin.social avatar

@CarlsIII try click on More at the original post and select Copy to Fediverse. That'll get you the originating url. This works for every type of post and comment.

@Friend

CarlsIII ,

@cendawanita

@Friend

Again, this is all way more work than it would be if the post just showed the instance in the first place. I already know I can find out what instance if I do some scrolling and clicking. I would prefer to just have the “@beehaw.org” added to the community name in the post (and to not display “kbin.social” on posts that aren’t even from kbin. I still haven’t heard an explanation for that.)

Auster , to Linux in Tips for a new Linux user

One thing I suggest is:
You're trying to get something working but it isn't going anywhere? Try again later.

First, because of the obvious calming down, since stress can affect the person's capacity to solve problems.
Second, I've noticed how many things on Linux have some degree of similarity and/or relation to one another. So trying other things in the meantime can give you the needed insight for solving a previous problem.

Mawkey OP ,

Good advice to be honest. Luckily I have a lot of patience so I think I should be fine in the end.

Slartibartfast ,

And don't skip over reading things! I also run Arch with KDE and honestly with almost all problems I have, if I carefully read through either the Arch Wiki (this will probably be your most valuable tool) or the error message that comes up, the answer is usually in there somewhere, it just needs digging up.

Also: if something with a GUI crashes and doesn't give an error message, try running it in the terminal. So like, if Firefox crashes and doesn't give any info, try opening up a terminal and running firefox from there and the terminal will tell you everything that's going on. (It'll be a different command if you're using a flatpak but that's the general idea.)

phazed09 , to Fediverse in CTA: Create a thriving Fediverse without relying on Reddit
@phazed09@kbin.social avatar

The more you call it a Reddit alternative, the more people will stop migrating over as the Reddit outrage cools down (and as much as spez can go fuck himself, he's right, it will pass). I think Mastodon had the same issue at the time of the Twitter migration, but lately it's been focussing more on the fact that good instances provide a nicer small community feel that's more reflective of the state of Twitter in 2008-2012 or so.

Advertise the community, not the drop-in replacement for another platform that will always be larger and more mainstream.

dlanm2u ,

yes gotta make it “Reddit, a kbin alternative”

Mars2k21 , to /kbin in Why is Kbin seemingly growing considerably slower than Lemmy?
@Mars2k21@kbin.social avatar

Probably because of the endorsement of Lemmy by subreddits, which has been far greater than the endorsement of Kbin. Lemmy's also just been around far longer than Kbin. Those server issues that Kbin encountered during the whole explosion of users also likely slowed down growth a bit. Even with Lemmy's bot problem I think these have made it grow faster anyway.

cjerrington ,
@cjerrington@kbin.social avatar

I also think some of the growth of Lemmy is the ability to get the project to a functioning stance. The start of Kbin still seems a little rocky, but getting better.

Wereduck ,

I’m a bit confused if I watched the same thing as OP and you. I don’t think those comments are from him, but rather random people responding to his video? The video seemed like an argument that pure self-interest is self defeating, and on the importance of solidarity, in response to someone saying that supporting blind access is virtue signaling. But with a clickbaity and a bit misleading title (note apostrophe position in Redditor’s vs Redditors’)

CynAq , to RedditMigration in At Reddit I can save a thread, at Mastodon I can bookmark a post or comment. How do I save a Kbin (or other) 'article', comment, etc?
@CynAq@kbin.social avatar

Kbin doesn't currently support saving.
I bookmark things for now on my local browser. Afaik, the feature is in the to do list so I'll save what I can from from the bookmarks manually once that's done.

polygon ,
@polygon@kbin.social avatar

If you upvote a post it will put it in your Favorites. You can access favorites by hovering over the hamburger menu just to the left of your username in the top right corner. To upvote without putting it in your favorites, you can use boost instead. This is essentially how you save posts on kbin.

CynAq ,
@CynAq@kbin.social avatar

Yes but on reddit, upvotes puts something in your upvoted list and you can save selectively, which is a much better system for organization.

Boosts and upvotes have a slightly different functionality here that I do upvote and/or boost posts and comments differently, none of which is to add the post to my favorites. Even though it can be used that way for the same effect, it's a different use case.

What if I want to save a post I didn't want to boost or favorite? Should I not be able to save a comment I disagree with that I also downvoted?

Rockin132 , to RedditMigration in r/ModCoord has officially recommended migration off of Reddit.

It's not worth staying on at this point anyway. The people that remain are largely assholes. You can basically see the reason that protests don't work as a macrocosm, because most users now are just bitching that "wahh the blackout only hurts users". No different to people complaining about climate activists who block highways, or trans right activists who get blamed for "being too loud and annoying". Protests don't work when solidarity simply doesn't exist because most people are just selfish, short sighted idiots, and that's basically the userbase that remains over on Reddit at this point. I can't think of a good reason to stay and interact with those kinds of people.

There are also lots of apologetic mod posts that are like "we reopened because we don't want to lose all our hard work and be replaced by someone worse, that is not what's best for our community so we're reopening", the ignorance and arrogance of such statements is mind blowing lmao, but trust Reddit mods to not see the wood for the trees.

junetest OP , to RedditMigration in How do I subscribe to [email protected]?

asjmcguire ,
@asjmcguire@kbin.social avatar

No, it's just that kbin has only recently started federating, and I believe ernest said it's still not FULLY federating yet. It's very new. kbin currently also has an issue where it is case sensitive but pretty much nowhere else is - which is causing some odd quirks. The proper format is @magazine so @china
