Trump talks big in front of cameras and microphones but is a giant wuss behind a defendants table.

Nougat , to Politics in Trump tests the tolerance of judges and even his own lawyers

But lawyers familiar with Trump's rhetoric said they expect the former president to wade into commentary, and personal attacks, on people involved in bringing him to justice across four separate criminal indictments in four different jurisdictions.

Uhhh ... he already has - Jack Smith, Tanya Chutkan, Fani Willis - you don't have to "expect" it.

Hirom , to U.S. News in A 4% income tax on millionaires will make lunch free for Massachusetts K-12 students

an additional 4% income tax on state residents’ incomes above $1 million

The standard state income tax rate in Massachusetts is 5%.

Does that mean the highest earners have a 9% income tax in that area? Either that’s very low, or this article isn’t very clear on actual tax rates.

SomeRandomWords ,

MA (and much of the US) has a multi-level tax system where they all stack up.

Let’s tax someone in Boston, MA making $1.5m/yr

Local = 0% State = 9% (previously 5%) Federal = 37%

So on their final dollar of income they’ll be paying 46% income tax now. Note of course because of graduated income tax schemes, that 46% is not applied to the entire $1.5m but instead only to the amount that fits into the highest bracket.

Hirom ,

That make sense. Thanks a lot.

So overall income tax in Boston, MA for the highest bracket is 46%. That’s comparable to many european countries. Although brackets are probably very different.

apis , to U.S. News in A 4% income tax on millionaires will make lunch free for Massachusetts K-12 students

Misleading title - they’re not doing this by applying 4% tax to the income of mere millionaires, they’re doing it by applying 4% to the incomes of those with annual incomes one million and over.

That’s a much, much wealthier cohort than the title implies.

redandgray ,

Remember that this is a marginal income tax rate, i.e. it does not apply to the first $1 million of taxable annual income, only to the amount in excess of that threshold.

apis ,

Assumed that as a given, but the title is as misleading as all of the general chatter about taxes which neglect to mention marginal rates.

Brawndo , to U.S. News in A 4% income tax on millionaires will make lunch free for Massachusetts K-12 students

It'll be interesting to see if they stay in Massachusetts or leave for another state.

TQuid , to Politics in Trump tests the tolerance of judges and even his own lawyers

He’s not “testing tolerance”. He is violating the terms of his release. Flagrantly and repeatedly. If the justice system wants to continue to command respect, they need a show-cause hearing followed by remanding him to custody until he stands trial. Just as would happen to literally anyone else intimidating witnesses or threatening the judiciary. It would be controversial only with people with no respect for the law already. It needs to be done.

MJBrune , to U.S. News in A 4% income tax on millionaires will make lunch free for Massachusetts K-12 students

How Republicans look at it: 4% of 1 million is 40,000 which is almost as much as my salary! How dare they take my whole salary away from me!

Come on man, people don’t treat dogs this cruel. It’s just water. Fucking water.

Blamemeta , to U.S. News in Barrels of drinking water for migrants walking through Texas have disappeared

Good shit. Shouldn’t encourage illegals.

stillwater ,

Why does every comment you make sound like you think all migrants should be killed?

Blamemeta ,

Because Im not? Just don’t want illegal immigrants, and we shouldn’t encourage them.

Imajustlayhere ,

does it matter where the immigrants come from? What makes them illegal immigrants? They are immigrants fleeing for their lives a lot of times. If they want to come over here and start the process of becoming legal that's great. If they want to work illegally no skin off of my back. There are no social services for illegal immigrants it doesn't cost you anything and don't pretend they are taking your jobs because we both know you aren't going to do the jobs they do anyhow. Idk why I'm even commenting.

Kind of hard to preach honesty and marital integrity when the leader you endorse has two ex-wives and is a convicted rapist.

Moore believes part of the problem is that "almost every part of American life is tribalized and factionalized," and that has extended to the church.

Does this "top official in the Southern Baptist Convention," current editor-in-chief of Christianity Today magazine, and author of a book on "finding a path forward for the religion he loves" know a single fucking thing about the history of religion in general or Christianity in particular? Because religion/Christianity has been "tribalized and factionalized" literally forever, long before America even existed.

Fuck this guy pretending to be some kind of expert or authority on the subject.
