Stunning.

Hope the mystery signed brick will go in along with your own plaque to future humans.

apis ,

Beautiful.

Some archaeologist is going to find this one day. Be fun to include a plaque with a message for them (and for anyone who uses it after you).

apis ,

To attach wood to an I-beam, you could drill holes in the flanges of the beam, then use bolts. There are also fittings that you can slide posts & beams into, with various ways of securing them to the material they hold. If you’re not using T-shaped fittings, you could bolt fittings together.

apis ,

Try an image search for “beam connectors” and you should get an idea of the types of things that are available, but a trip to your local builders’ merchant & a chat with the people there may be more fruitful.

apis ,

They’re our structural engineer now, Dave.

apis ,

Assumed OP meant this type of thing, but yours seems more likely as it would be cheaper to buy & to install.

What do you recommend as a solution to harden paper? ( libranet.de )

I have a few project ideas, and I thought of reusing the paper from various shop catalogs that I receive in my physical mailbox. I'd like to make it stiffer, something more like cardboard. I read somewhere online that you could use corn starch for this, mixed with water. Would it work? Do you have better ideas?

apis ,

Often don’t need corn starch, but depends on makeup of the paper & what you want for the end use, leave to dry. Can add glues for other effects.

Tear up pieces, soak in water, squeeze out excess water, shape as needed. Adjust size of torn pieces for different structural effects, from slurry you can pipe for definition & brittle strength or compression through to large overlaid sheets for sheering strength & flexibility)

apis ,

Oh you want this stuff by a brand called Hagesan Blue, sometimes listed as “HG”. It’ll be obvious which of their products to get though if I recall a few are suitablr.

Ryman’s used to sell it.

apis ,

Good question.

Has he been charged at federal level yet? Would imagine that federal prosecutors prefer to negotiate deals separately, but who knows what strategic arrangements go on behind the scenes.

Even if this won’t touch the federal case, it would be worth his while, purely because state prisons are far gnarlier than federal. He’s still likely to get some credit for having eventually cooperated at state level.

if you voted for Trump, you are forever cut off from the Blessings of Liberty.. you are not, and never will be fellow citizens of mine.. i will not defend any of you or your offspring from even the most basic harm.. you are enemies living among us for the rest of your lives..

apis ,

Look, these fuckers are incredibly dangerous, impede anything good, inflict great harm & as the foot soldiers of terrible ideologies could end us all. Defending ourselves & everything good against them is paramount, and protecting those who are more vulnerable even more so.

But, for so long as they remain alive, terrible people retain the potential to change into ok people. Sure, statistically the chances are low, but that tells us nothing about any given individual. So whilst their targets have to give them the widest possible berth for their own safety, and could not be criticised for declining to help a Trumper (or others in the same vein), when they are being dealt with they should still be dealt with humanely and fairly. If we’re face to face, with no support, all bets are off, but once their behaviours are contained they should be treated as one would treat any incredibly damaged creature - with caution, yes, but never cruelty.

Otherwise we become transformed by hate of their hatreds & attacks into something a bit less like ourselves, and a lot more like them.

As for their offspring, leave them out of it. Saw your point about merely trying to get the Trumpers to pay heed, but it already seems many have a very strange sense of “care” for their children, whereas others are so delusional they believe the libs & left are already intent on harming their kids. Plus the statement is ideal for them to use terrify their children about the perils of non-Trumpers.

I don’t mean to seem like I’m having a go at you. Your rage & disgust are valid.

apis ,

Keep searching, as parts do turn up, but you may be able to find someone skilled in fabrication who could make the part for you. Failing that, they could make something which would work in your oven & maybe last longer.

You’d need to show them the one you have & ideally schematics for the piece & for the whole oven.

    What is a MAGA follower?

A person who strongly supports many of the activities & goals of the far-right in the US, AND who are ok with the use of violence & gross abuses of power to achieve those goals.

Anyone that doesn’t vote for Biden?

    No.

Explicitly, most conservatives are not MAGA followers. Hell, many Trump voters aren’t either.

You can’t please everyone in a democratic system, there will always be actual problems, and reform is painfully slow, so it is natural that some get impatient, but jettisoning the whole concept is extraordinarily dangerous.

    apis ,

    Yup.

Would take this quote as highlighting the need to give this school a hard swerve.

If my children were already in it, I’d need extremely compelling reasons to not withdraw them immediately.

    apis ,

Full of admiration for everyone who has fought to achieve this. Am certain it will inspire many to join in the push to protect workers.

    apis ,

True, though presumably they also have staff who have nothing to do with that end of things, and who’d be firewalled from it no matter where they come from?

And, though a majority of refugees might not be possible to vet to the degree necessary for security clearance, this is not true for all of them. Some will have held positions in the US working on highly sensitive matters, others may have worked alongside US military or CIA before they came to the US.

To bring a case before a court, the DOJ would have to be able to show that applicants for jobs at SpaceX were being discriminated against by virtue of their refugee status. If it can be shown that the applicants in question were rejected for some valid reason (such as inability to vet them for a role where that is necessary or just desirable), they’d have no case.

Fairly confident that fascists don’t want intersex people to exist at all. They won’t say that openly yet, but they clearly find them as bothersome as trans and nonbinary people.

Nor do they want cis people wandering around thinking they can neglect to adhere to strict conservative gender norms. Indeed, this is likely what all of their deep hatred toward trans people is really about - the means to rile themselves up enough to inflict strict gender norms on the whole population. Whether they are fantasising about a world which looks like a 1950s advertisement for a refrigerator, or several levels more regressive again, they’re not intending any sort of pleasant outcome for anyone whose body or behaviour or identity does not quite fit with the fascist fantasy.

They won’t succeed in getting that far, but they absolutely will continue to ramp up their attacks.

EDIT: this is the crux of the phrase “trans rights are human rights”. Trans, NB & intersex people are the canary in the coalmine.

    apis ,

Because they aren’t interested in doing so, and know that there are no good ways to define these things.

What they want is the means to impose strict gender norms, and to persecute anyone who does not fit for any reason and in any way.

So, today they want workers who aren’t super gender conforming to provide their birth certificates to use the restroom. Then they’ll escalate until workers conform or get shoved out. After that, strict gender dress codes for all employees, then gender-specific roles… sometime down the line, a ban on married women working in state organisations, women unofficially barred from most workplaces & most roles, and ideally barred from being out of the house without a male relative as chaperone, blocked from having a bank account or owning property, and in due course… welp now they are property.

Misleading title - they’re not doing this by applying 4% tax to the income of mere millionaires, they’re doing it by applying 4% to the incomes of those with annual incomes one million and over.

That’s a much, much wealthier cohort than the title implies.

    apis ,

Assumed that as a given, but the title is as misleading as all of the general chatter about taxes which neglect to mention marginal rates.

    apis ,

Probably because having Asian heritage does not make one immune from being racist? Certainly there are various Asian supremacist movements within Asia.

Within the US, it is still just a matter of desiring a race-based hierarchy - they sure as hell don’t want equality, nor to be at the bottom along with everyone White Nationalists seek to oppress, so though they know that as a minority they won’t ever be at the top of such a hierarchy, they hope to end up in second place.

Trump Promotes Threatening Video: 'We Are Going to Do Things to You That Have Never Been Done Before' ( www.thenewcivilrightsmovement.com )

Overnight Donald Trump promoted a video featuring an extreme close-up photo of his face in black and white, and audio of him making an obvious threat: “If you f— around with us, if you do something bad to us, we are going to do things to you that have never been done before.” Trump “retruthed” […]

Mrrrm, I think we’ve all felt this or similar sentiments about many categories of convict, and especially those guilty of violent crimes, but I don’t have enough faith in the system to back the idea of a label in perpetuity by default. We can look into each other’s backgrounds if we’re so inclined, but otherwise I’d prefer for convicted offenders who have served their sentence to feel they can be contributors to society, and not to remain mired in the anti-social, dangerous paradigm from whence their bad behaviour emerged. These aren’t people who set out with a sense of boundaries or harm or why it is bad to rape. If we can’t stop them before the fact, we have a duty to encourage them to learn these things after the fact.
