Blamemeta , to Texas in [Texas Tribune] As race-neutral college admissions begin, Texas counselors work to convince students of color they still belong

So basically, these counselors are so racist, they think bipoc students can’t make it on their own merit.

Should be fired for racism and stupidity.

Federal money USUALLY comes with strict rules and paper trails but we will have to wait and see

Tenthrow , to Texas in [Texas Tribune] Texas gets $60 million in federal funds to strengthen power grid against extreme weather
@Tenthrow@lemmy.world avatar

Honestly doesn’t seem like that much money for the entire state. Not that it will be used for that anyway.

I wonder what new, exciting proxy for “don’t be black” HOA’s will find.

Oh good. He was sentenced in federal court. Abbott can’t pardon him to earn points with his racist base.

Lol wait I thought it was already zero?

Brunbrun6766 OP Mod ,
@Brunbrun6766@lemmy.world avatar

No. Texas uses excessive property tax because we have Zero income tax. Our constitution specifically outlines that the state can have one or the other but not both. So we cranked up property taxes to make up for it making Texas nearly as expensive as California to live.

sudo22 ,
@sudo22@lemmy.world avatar

You’re thinking of state income taxes. Texas doesn’t have those.

Property taxes are based on the appraisal value of your home (appraised yearly with the option to appeal the increases) times the tax rates for your school district and county (anywhere from something like 2%-6% depending on region, don’t quote me on those numbers).

AfricanExpansionist , to Texas in [Texas Tribune] With no new funding from the state, Texas schools are breaking the bank to pay for teacher raises

I loved living in Texas when I was young but it’s clear that the crazies have taken over the asylum

Mongostein , to Texas in [Texas Tribune] With no new funding from the state, Texas schools are breaking the bank to pay for teacher raises

They just have to do more bottle drives and get the kid mowing lawns to pay the teachers

Yeah, if a business isn’t able to pay for its employees, then it shouldn’t exist. Fuck them schools. /s xD

Melody , to U.S. News in Texas A&M recruited a UT professor to revive its journalism program, then backtracked after “DEI hysteria”
@Melody@lemmy.one avatar

Wow.

As a former Texan; this really doesn’t surprise me. It’s why I got out of Texas.

It does also confirm something I have long feared has settled into conservative viewpoints…a hysteria so vast that it would engender and encourage the unchecked growth of facism.

I implore anyone reading this who is of voting age in the USA right now and is able to vote legally…to vote Democrat.

I’m not saying the Dems are without problems; but they at least don’t seem to be focused on becoming facist.

Also, you literally just read the shit aloud and have them sign, wtf are you “performing”. You’re just the facilitator to their marriage that is 100% legal. This is like that county clerk years go, If you don’t want to do something that is YOUR JOB then fucking quit. Any other job you’d be fired for refusing to do your job.

Blamemeta , to Work Reform in [Texas Tribune] “We are dying”: Houston workers protest new state law removing water break requirements

Shitty law, but it’s not even in effect yet.

hoodatninja ,

Yeah, because as we know, no general contractor would leap at the opportunity to start early lol

orphiebaby ,
@orphiebaby@lemmy.world avatar

Nah, let’s wait until the law passes and people die first, that’s a great idea! /s

Arcane_Trixster ,

People are already dying in the heat. Remove water breaks and it gets worse. Are you fucking 12?

Shinhoshi ,
@Shinhoshi@lemmygrad.ml avatar

In Houston today, it’s going to feel like 43°C (110°F). When I go outside in that heat even for a second or two, I‘m already too hot, need a water break, and wonder how anyone can survive working in that.

I don’t know how anyone with a conscience could feel that heat and think removing water breaks for the workers is fine.

Maybe I’m just a stupid communist though and should try losing my conscience or something…

Blamemeta ,

If you use celsius as a default, I doubt you live in Houston.

Shinhoshi ,
@Shinhoshi@lemmygrad.ml avatar

I prefer the metric system – my weather app is set to Celsius and the Farenheight was a conversion. While I don’t live in Houston, I do live in Texas currently.

ZombieTheZombieCat ,

You’re right, only people who live in Houston, Texas are allowed to comment on how dangerous and degrading this is. I’m sure there’s no possibility of other red states adopting it or similar.

/s

I will never understand people who argue in favor of their own rights being taken away.

toasteecup ,

Nice topic dodge. Tell me more about how other temperature systems are bad for people who are dying from heat stroke.

jimbolauski , to Work Reform in [Texas Tribune] “We are dying”: Houston workers protest new state law removing water break requirements

In hot weather OHSA requires water breaks, these laws are redundant.

yokonzo ,

Seems like there’s enough fear to cause protests at least

str00pwafel ,

OSHA and the state have different mechanisms of enforcement though, and there’s a reason OSHA guidelines aren’t followed very strictly on worksites

Sanctus ,
@Sanctus@lemmy.world avatar

When was the last time you had OSHA come crashing down on you the last time you scooted a manual fork around like a fucken razor scooter? Never? Same.

So how often do you think they will come to these people’s aid when they are having a heatstroke? Thats right. Never.

just_ducky_in_NH ,

OSHA recommends water breaks, it does not require them.
