Or how about paper maps?

@georgetakei thinking about going back to the Thomas guild TBH.

@georgetakei these 3 square kilometer large paper maps you could never fold back together again the way they were before unfolding them 😂

Perspective ,
@Perspective@c.im avatar

@georgetakei the real skill was demonstrated when you could fold them back up so they'd fit back in the glove box! 😉

You best believe I still carry paper maps in my vehicle.

My husband and I camp in some remote spots where cell phones don't work and roads aren't paved.

I will never trust my cell phone provider nor US tech infrastructure enough to rely 100% on my phone for maps and navigation.

Following the roads less traveled often necessitates going low tech.

@georgetakei triptiks!

MaggyWells ,
@MaggyWells@mastodon.social avatar

@georgetakei I still use them occasionally. Always have them handy on trips

@georgetakei sometimes you could even get to your destination more easily! At least you could see the full route!

alysondecker ,
@alysondecker@mstdn.social avatar

@georgetakei I remember the book of regional maps we used to carry in our cars where you’d have to find the page and then follow the number and letter grid to find your destination and then you’d flip through the pages back to your current location and try and figure out a route between the two pages without them (usually) ever being side by side.

@georgetakei and a compass or dead reckoning!

@georgetakei

I do remember. It was terrible. GPS maps were a godsend.

Sadly, now that humanity in its recklessness is about to unleash Kessler syndrome, we're going to have to go back to paper maps soon…

I still have about 30 paper street maps for various parts of the UK.

@georgetakei paper maps are awesome when travelling as opening on e on a table will always attract people over to tell you places to visit

@georgetakei in the UK we had an excellent book called the AtoZ, which was a detailed roadmap of the entire UK. I don't think anyone went without one, and they were as common as phone books or the yellow pages

CAA had TripTiks... Linear spiral bound flip maps for your specific driving trip.

Dr_Elizabeth97 ,
@Dr_Elizabeth97@mastodon.social avatar

@georgetakei , I remember the first time I got a Thomas Guide. I was confused but nonetheless thought I had hit the big time. Once you figured them out, you could find anything.

JayDublin ,
@JayDublin@mastodon.social avatar

@georgetakei And they were generic “Road Maps” not route maps with directions to your specific destination. Them were the days. Lol
