@arstechnica Pretty wild how many people in these comments are blaming the victim. I mean sure, it would make sense to have their own backups (and they did still have another active backup service) but shouldn't the blame fall upon Google for failing so catastrophically?

Evidently this was a freak accident but when your whole business is protecting data, you should always be able to recover from a situation like this. Even if the failure was initiated by the customer.

@arstechnica When you are managing 135 billion dollars, at that point you really should be able to afford a few datacenters as a precaution.

@arstechnica Whoever at UniSuper insisted on a multi-provider solution should win Australian of the Year.

It would have been the tech scandal of the century if it weren't for that one person who likely pushed back against "but we already have backups at Google".

@arstechnica I've been reading your site since at least 2003, and it now seems half the posts involve corporate malfeasance: OpenAI, Meta, Tesla, Google, SpaceX, Boeing , and many others just can't prevent themselves from screwing over their customers (and in some cases, society at large). What's going on? We need to step up enforcement of corporate crime and maybe break up these giant entities.

@arstechnica No one should ever only have data in a cloud. :(
