In his speech to the NRA, Trump yet again suggested he might serve more than two terms.

The 22nd Amendment bars that, but if the 14th Amendment didn't apply to him, why should any others?

If Trump wins, do you believe he will leave office at the end of a second term?

@rbreich it's smell like a "préambule" of a civil war 🤔

@rbreich

If Trump wins, GOP will never leave office again.

@rbreich What I wonder is who is waiting in the shadows, positioning himself to step in when Dementia-Don is entering la-la-land.

trainman ,
@trainman@sfba.social avatar

@rbreich He will not leave office gracefully after exercising every legal effort to circumvent the 22nd Amendment.
Trump believes that laws apply elsewhere, not to him.

@OrionKidder@mas.to avatar

@rbreich No, they will have altered the legal system by then.

@rbreich Looking at reports of his health and seeing his issues with speech, I'm not sure if he'll live to see the end of a second term, but if he does, I'm not sure that he'll leave willingly.

RobynNuthall ,
@RobynNuthall@mastodon.nz avatar

@rbreich Nope no, he has no intention of leaving once in. As you note, he's said it, and in fact said it many times.

@rbreich The only way he leaves is in a casket, and by then, the GOP will have canceled all future elections.

He's human COVID--he'll never stop plaguing us!

gooba42 ,
@gooba42@mastodon.social avatar

@rbreich I don't believe he'd ever leave office except feet first. There just isn't any reason to expect him to respect any laws or customs because the GOP will never impeach him and the SCOTUS is in his pocket.

There are no checks and balances, we were told lies in our civics classes.

f4grx ,

@rbreich no.

b00tl00ps ,

@rbreich No. His first act will be to "allow" himself term limits beyond the rules. Overnight the US will become a Kingdom with nepotism as the ruling hierarchy, and the "grace" of royalty the only measurement of morality. He will pull the US out of NATO, decrees be damned, and in doing so, allow Putin free reign to trample whomever he wants. Wars will be fought with Canada over fresh water; civil war will break out, and any public resource not in service to the Trump name, cut or repurposed

I think Trump will declare himself the winner even if he loses this election.

What happens next depends on whether people go to war over it.

On the upside, he'll stroke out way before that. On the downside, they'll pick a young VP who'll be dictator for life (at least until they have him assassinated, I suppose), when they decide to get rid of him (and blame non-christians, of course).

gcobbum ,

@rbreich

Maybe it was a rhetorical question?

He believes he won in 2020 and so now is his second term, so winning in 2024 would then be his third term.

Of course, if it were his third term, he wouldn't be allowed to be POTUS, barred by the 22nd.

If the manages to seize power (losing the election is moot as they will refuse to accept the results again) will only leave in a coffin and will be replaced by his chosen successor (Baron, likely, unless Ivanka gets back on the daddy program).

If take power in 2024 there will no longer be real elections and America will fall to fascism.

Dragon1964 ,
@Dragon1964@mastodon.social avatar

@rbreich yes absolutely he will leave, but he will pretend like he's not going to first and make a show, but ultimately he's weak and just full of hot air. People mistake his constant demands and big talk as strength. It's not. It is infact exactly the opposite. Strip all that away and you have a sad little boy.
