This is really what Strange New Worlds is most about: giving us precious knowledge about what our heros in the original Star Trek were all doing before we met them on the Enterprise in the TV sets in our living rooms in the 1960s

I respectfully disagree. I don’t think the most important parts of this show are the things it depicts legacy characters doing, though your review mentions little else.

Given your clear fondness for TOS, I’d be interested in reading you compare the two more!

@ikesau Thanks for the comment. To read what I think of non-legacy characters in Strange New Worlds, try some of my reviews of other episodes of the series (for example, the time-travel episode in which Singh and Kirk are the main characters, and I discuss Singh as much as Kirk).

One Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Scene Made Christina Chong & Paul Wesley Want To Puke

Now I want to rewatch this scene with what the actors were going through in mind. Egad.

Fan Made Shows/Movies?

@startrek

Any particular shows people here like watching? I've seen Renegades and a few others. I'm currently in the middle of Phase II. The special effects impress me for the budgets involved, and the writing/acting makes me appreciate the professionals more :^P I don't want to shit on any of them though. The effort is solid, and they're still an enjoyable watch.

quark ,
@quark@startrek.website avatar

There is an audio project called wolf 359, which is different; I don’t even think that is Star Trek related. That is the youtube page that comes up when you search wolf 359. Google carefully!

Betazed ,

Actually this looks like another channel entirely. I’ll have to add it to my list. The short I remember watching had a very TOS type plot where some kind of radiation or energy caused the crew to become obsessed with the object in their own way. The tactical officer wanted to shoot it, the science officer wanted to study it, etc. It was hokey but still pretty neat. The effects were low budget 90s TV movie quality but had a charm about them.

Hey … you’re posting to lemmy from mastodon … that’s awesome!!

Just a few small tips for making it work better on the lemmy side of things (mostly post formatting).

First … you can look at how your post appears on lemmy here: startrek.website/post/363006

Basic formatting tips:

  1. Treat the first line of you post as the title. You can see that your whole post, including hashtags, is on one line, and so creates a large messy title over here.
  2. Keep hashtags out of the title as they create links that are messy
  3. The next lines are treated as the body of the post … you can put everything else here including hashtags (which will work well) etc.
  4. If you want to tag anyone else, make sure to tag them after the lemmy community, as lemmy only pays attention to the first tag (which is a measure to prevent spam)

I wrote a little demo of what works here: hachyderm.io/@maegul/110483509521476095

Otherwise … really appreciate the effort to try to bridge these two spaces!

@PaulLev@mastodon.social avatar

@maegul thanks -- I'll follow that format from now on

A few years back I built an Altair 8800 replica. Aside from the build itself, one of the best parts was booting a CP/M image to play Super Star Trek.

They just released a full 3D remake. I’ve been meaning to check it out sometime.

@startrek Did anyone else read Jammer's Reviews as a kid? Did you know this guy's still pumping out reviews?

I wonder if the producers ever took his feedback seriously, or if he's even on their radar.

https://www.jammersreviews.com/st-snw/s2/tomorrow.php

freamon ,

Episodes 1&2 got 3*, but he’s given episode 3 only 2*, so he thinks the exact opposite of me. I didn’t like 1 (I would’ve preferred if the doctor and the nurse had found a non-violent solution), was bored by 2 (not a real Trekkie, obviously), and 3 was my favourite.

startrekexplained ,

I discovered him as a teenager in the late 2000s, and was surprised to rediscover him recently that he’s still reviewing Star Trek, and other sci-fi shows like The Orville, etc. Love his reviews even if I don’t always agree.

Also apparently he was invited to pitch stories to the Voyager writing crew, but they all sucked so they were not bought.

@apps is it possible to subscribe to the timelin of a account (like @startrek with a lot of postings per day) using without having those postings flooding my personal timeline?

I'm worried to flood my personal timeline and on the other hand it is possible to put an instances timeline on a list without directly following it.

I think you could follow it, but also mute it.

To be honest, though, I find the overall experience is better with separate accounts for Mastodon and Lemmy.

@rother_stuebs @apps @startrek

Mastodon 4.1.4 allows hiding list contents from home. The feed is disordered, and is sometimes lacking context, but I find it minimally workable.

Ooh, just followed my first lemmy community from Mastodon. Seems I just have to replace the "!" with "@" when I search for them. They seem to show up as a "Group" here. Nice!

@veronica @startrek FYI, tagging a Lemmy community from Mastodon also turns the toot into a post in that community - something to keep in mind!

@bjh13@ruby.social avatar

@veronica @startrek yep, and I follow some of those communities as well and it’s great. Just as a warning you will see every comment as a post, so make sure to click on them so you see the whole “thread” and get the context.

Didn't actually realise that the subreddits of /r/StarTrek & /r/DaystromInstitute had a community @ https://lemmy.world/c/[email protected] @startrek.

Given Trek fandom are often the first colonizers of online spaces in internet history (eg newsgroups) losing major Star Trek communities is big L for Reddit.

EDIT: Not permamently locked subreddits, got that wrong I think!

Gotta ask. I have this same account name on lemmy.world and on startrek.website. Will that be a problem? I've just been logging into both, the startrek.website posts seem to take a long time to get to lemmy.world, so I just log in here if I want to read this stuff.

Next on this old starship, we building a forum.

Also, where did the name friends of DeSoto come from? I’ve listened for years and feel like a missed a random reference.

Soupbreaker ,

It’s from the early days of Greatest Gen, and references Captain DeSoto of the USS Hood (NCC-1703). DeSoto and the Hood made several appearances in TNG, and Ben and Adam leaned into his chill vibes, theorizing that the Hood would be a great place to work.

It’s also an allusion to the phrase Friend of Dorothy, an older euphemism for LGBT people.

I think it was originally jokingly conceived as a sort of passphrase or shibboleth for fans of the pod to identify each other without revealing their embarrassing enthusiasm to outsiders, e.g.

Q: “Are you a friend of DeSoto?”

A: “Best boss I ever had!”
