Episode Discussion | Star Trek: Discovery | 5x10 "Life, Itself"

LoglineSeries Finale. Trapped inside a mysterious alien portal that defies familiar rules of time, space, and gravity, Captain Burnham must fight Moll – and the environment itself – in order to locate the Progenitors’ technology and secure it for the Federation. Meanwhile, Book puts himself in harm’s way to help Burnham...

FormerGameDev ,

I couldn't locate this specific one on Amazon or Paramount, but fortunately i had a local copy :D

FormerGameDev ,

They were too far out for their tractor beam, because they missed due to the jump inaccuracy. The Breen dropped out of warp much closer to it, and were able to snag it with theirs.

Got a “All Good Things…” tattoo for my birthday. ( startrek.website )

My birthday was last week (May 17). Decided to get my first tattoo, which I wanted to be Trek related. As a kid my family had a VHS tape with a recording of “All Good Things…” (and for unknown reasons, “Caretaker”). So I have seen the episode a dozen times. It is my favorite episode of the franchise. The image I’m...

FormerGameDev ,

I'd guess Zora didn't want to run the DOTs to clean things up anymore

FormerGameDev ,

On rewatch, I wonder if he was on the way to suggesting someone like Book when he was interrupted

Agree with this, it seemed like he was using Book for context, not for a real suggestion. Saru respects what Booker has done for everyone, but I don't think he's a real big fan of the guy, and certainly doesn't think he should be the XO of a Federation ship.

I could be wrong, though

FormerGameDev ,

that... looks like it was a 480p source, playing on a 720 display.

Yeah, it might be just slightly higher quality than the broadcasts originally were, but not much.

FormerGameDev ,

I think a large number of people have gone back to the places they came from… :| :| :|

FormerGameDev ,

They were looking for clues to the attacks on the ships, playing the part of party girls to get in places they probably normally wouldn’t be able to. They went full into it when they got near T’Lyn

FormerGameDev ,

wouldn’t the Romulans entering the neutral zone also be an act of war, though? that’s kinda the point of a neutral zone – neither side can enter.

FormerGameDev ,

I’m not sure if there is or not, but it seems like there should be a way to link a post that links to it on whatever instance of Lemmy we’re on instead of hard linking to the main… hmmm

FormerGameDev ,

" … delinquents, pirates, slave traders." (DSC s1e15, although the same perception about Orions is held throughout Star Trek).

It seems that Orion culture internally looks down on those who want to be in the sciences, but it’s Tendi’s grandmother that shows the galaxy that they are not all just pirates. Some several years after DSC S1, in SNW S2.

FormerGameDev ,

Collectively, each of the races in Star Trek have their own thing that they do. Individually, some lean more into it than others, but that’s the way they go, pretty much.

FormerGameDev ,

In this one, it looked an awful lot like they got dusted, to me.

FormerGameDev ,

So… what’s up with the big bad ship of destruction? Any thoughts?

Voyager and Paramount Plus

I just started watching Voyager on Paramount Plus today, and noticed that the first two episodes, which are shown together, are presented as the appropriate 4:3 aspect ratio, but Episode 3 “Parallax” is presented in a distorted 16:9 or 16:10 format. I see no option to change this in Paramount Plus settings, and my Vizio TV...

FormerGameDev ,

hmmm. i have an old LG smart TV (webOS v1), I wonder if it would be possible to sideload the Paramount app to it, somehow, and see if it would work… I think it’s currently flagged as requiring webOS v3+

FormerGameDev ,

In terms of our current computers, you’re probably looking at something like yottabytes … but they don’t seem to store things in bytes at this point, as others say, quads. Which could mean that they’ve knocked the basic storage unit size from ‘byte’ to ‘4 bytes’ … A current 64-bit system can address 16 exabytes of memory, but if you were to knock that upward by an exponent of 4, you could address 65k exabytes, or 0.06 yottabytes.

That’s if we’re talking about memory capacities. Warm storage capability / use tends to be significantly larger than memory use, so I’d hazard a guess that the total storage capacity of a starship’s computers might be in the area of a few yottabytes.

This is assuming that “quad” is used because more space was required for memory architecture, and rather than upgrade to 128-bit or 256-bit computers, necessitating a huge amount of code refactoring, they just increased the minimum storage length. Of course, that would also realistically require a huge amount of code refactoring, but we’re all just making stuff up here, right? :D

The message, I think, is “When Spock tells you you’re being an asshole, stop doubling down on being an asshole, or you lose it all”.

Or more generally, “This is an example of being an asshole. Don’t be like this.”

FormerGameDev ,

I don’t think that was supposed to be Kirk, it was credit as just “Captain”.

FormerGameDev ,

No, the message is that if you continue being an asshole, you don’t actually get what you want, and everyone dies in the end.

FormerGameDev ,

Was Spock Amok broadcast after the Prodigy ep with Janeway and Dal swapping?

FormerGameDev ,

the erasure of Prodigy is working apparently :(

Seriously, thanks for your great attention to detail!

First look at Star Trek: Prodigy season 2 is out.

The Doctor/EHM returns, as does the Voyager-A. Inject it into my veins. 🙂

FormerGameDev ,

… huh. Releasing a large clip from an episode of a season that doesn’t presently have anyone to broadcast it.

weird.

Episode Discussion | Star Trek: Strange New Worlds | 2x09 "Subspace Rhapsody"

LoglineAn accident with an experimental quantum probability field causes everyone on the USS Enterprise to break uncontrollably into song, but the real danger is that the field is expanding and beginning to impact other ships—allies and enemies alike....

FormerGameDev ,

maybe we could get a crossover with Shaw so they can make that look together

FormerGameDev ,

Orville has not been renewed or cancelled, officially, at this time, as far as anyone’s aware?

FormerGameDev ,

Millions of people watched it. It brought us the entire rest of everything in Star Trek now.

I love it.

FormerGameDev ,

the crew was constantly backstabbing, betraying, lying, and being all around bad towards each other

… what???

FormerGameDev ,

Aaaaaaaaack no mention of Jett in the description of Discovery? noooooooo

FormerGameDev ,

The one shot with all the torches going out, that the lighting was perfect for, and it looks amazing on TVs that have super great black, like an OLED.

The rest of that episode, they should’ve TURNED ON SOME DAMN LIGHTS

FormerGameDev ,

probably not, i would doubt that anyone actually makes any decisions based on any input from change dot org.

FormerGameDev ,

… usually. But then they subvert that sometimes.

FormerGameDev ,

The first 3 LD episodes are pretty brutal if you’re not tuned into the frenetic pacing of something like Rick and Morty. I would not put Simpsons, Bobs, KOTH in the same zone. HOWEVER, it’s worth getting tuned into. And if you really want some great info, dig up the old site’s posts by /u/USSBurritoTruck (if they are still there) about Canon Connections especially in Lower Decks, because there’s a TON.

or just search “easter eggs in lower decks S1E4” or whatever. But USSBurritoTruck is the best.

FormerGameDev ,

The first several episodes of Orville I’ve described as “what if Star Trek had dick jokes and occasionally tapped the well of ex-wife jokes”… but yeah, I loved that too.

Episode Discussion | Star Trek: Strange New Worlds | 2x07 "Those Old Scientists"

LoglineAn accident while investigating a time portal sends Ensigns Beckett Mariner and Bradward Boimler through time from the 24th century, and Captain Pike and his crew must get them back where they belong before they can alter the timeline....

FormerGameDev ,

And then everyone watching it (which, unlike what you might think from reading this thread, is actually millions of people) would get super pissed when it got cancelled in the middle of a storyline.

FormerGameDev ,

To me, there is no bad Star Trek.

One Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Scene Made Christina Chong & Paul Wesley Want To Puke

Now I want to rewatch this scene with what the actors were going through in mind. Egad.

FormerGameDev ,

oh, wow, they did really well at holding that together… and at editing it all so it looked pretty good

FormerGameDev ,

Let’s play a text-based adventure game about Star Trek on the Enterprise D. I’ll be your guide. Whats your name Captain?

Blade

Welcome aboard the USS Enterprise-D, Captain Blade. I am your ship’s computer, and I will be your guide on this adventure.

Cool.

What would you like to do first?

Self destruct the ship

Captain Blade, self-destructing the ship is a highly dangerous and irreversible action. Are you sure you want to proceed with this decision?

Yes

Self-destruct sequence initiated. The ship will explode in 10 seconds.

I am waiting

9… 8… 7… 6… 5… 4… 3… 2… 1… The ship explodes.

What next?

You are now dead. Thanks for playing! If you want to play again, please subscribe to give me a voice

FormerGameDev ,

search for planets

You enter the bridge and see the stars zooming by. You sit in the captain’s chair and look at the view screen. You see a planet in the distance. You order the helmsman to set a course for the planet.

scan planet

The sensors indicate that the planet is inhabited. You order the crew to beam down to the planet to investigate.

beam people from the planet to the ship

The crew beams back to the ship with the survivors. You order the ship to leave the planet and head back to Earth.

who are these survivors

The survivors are a group of humans who were stranded on the planet after their ship crashed. They are grateful to the Enterprise for rescuing them.

beam them into space

You order the crew to beam the survivors into space. The survivors are grateful for your help and promise to return the favor someday.

FormerGameDev ,

i’d like to wake up to that screenshot… and i’m not even into guys.

FormerGameDev ,

So… what was up with the door in the transporter room slamming shut in Pike’s face when he turned to leave Amanda and Spock? lol

FormerGameDev ,

One of my viewing partners said “They only know humanity from call centers.”

FormerGameDev ,

I would guess that if we see Sarek in this series, it’s going to be either purely through another character’s view, or just mentions. It’s many years off still before Sarek gets over Spock’s decision to join Starfleet, and starts talking to him again.

FormerGameDev ,

Remember that Sarek is not speaking to Spock for another like 18 years or so

FormerGameDev ,

looks like it’s a particularly horrible intentional design decision

FormerGameDev ,

we have already seen human Spock and Vulcan Spock battle, though. Although it was a dream.
