Can you show your sources about wages growing faster than inflation over the last year and a half?

CmdrShepard ,

I think that’s just fluff and this is a munchkin cat bred to have stubby little legs.

Can you offer investment advice? I'm debt-free, about to start earning $2k more per month than I need to survive. Please offer any suggestions for optimal investment method(s).

48 years old, currently have no investments. My net worth is my car and the clothes on my back, and I don’t ever want to be in this situation again....

CmdrShepard ,

They’re only paying like 3.6% right now. I’ve been earning more interest in a high yield savings account lately and it doesn’t have all the withdrawal penalties.

CmdrShepard ,

Mine likely have not updated to the new rate yet. I was just on the Treasury Direct site and am still receiving 3.6%.

CmdrShepard ,

The rates will update every 6 months on both ends, but depending on when you buy, your new 6-month rate may lag behind by 1-5 months after they’ve changed it on their end.

CmdrShepard ,

Depends on your definition of ‘damage.’

CmdrShepard ,

Your image doesn’t include the cost of the premiums. My work offers similar types of plans except the HDHP is ‘free’ while the PPO has premiums totalling $5-6k per year. For us, it makes zero sense to use the PPO since it’s guaranteed to cost at least $5-6k whether we see a doctor or not. With the HDHP, the theoretical minimum cost for the year is $0 if we never go to the doctor but realistically we usually get close or hit our family deductible but it’s still cheaper than the PPO.

CmdrShepard ,

What are you going to be using it for? This would help with recommendations.

CmdrShepard ,

So for a media server, and for power management, I’d ditch the discrete GPU and buy an Intel Core processor 10th gen or newer. Intel Quicksync does well with transcoding media and doesn’t cost you any additional power draw.

Mobo: buy whatever is cheap and compatible with the processor you choose. The more SATA ports the better.

RAM: 16GB should be plenty

Case: depending on what type of form factor you want, you might check out the Node 302 or the Define R7 cases from Fractal Design. These are both designed to hold a ton of HDDs so you can build up a media collection over time and just add a drive or two as needed.

If you don’t plan on growing a collection and prefer to just delete stuff after watching, then you can ignore this and buy whatever case you like.

SSD: 256GB to 500GB is good but more doesn’t hurt.

CmdrShepard ,

I just reread your OP and noticed you don’t currently have an SSD. You may consider swapping one in as the boot drive and running the rest of your current hardware (and possibly buying a new case for that “new PC” feeling) since they’re so cheap. This will, hands down, give you the biggest performance boost out of anything.

Realistically, the main benefit you’d get from buying all new hardware is better power efficiency as your current hardware is more than adequate for a media server, but it would possibly take years to ‘break even’ on operating costs depending on how much electricity costs where you live.

CmdrShepard ,

Yep, then I replicate myself a Holodeck.

CmdrShepard ,

First they’ll cancel Prodigy and then next thing you know they might cancel TNG or DS9. It’s a slippery slope!

CmdrShepard ,

It’s funny because living on the West Coast, we tell people the same thing to scare them away, but when you say it about the Midwest, I suspect you’re actually being truthful.

CmdrShepard ,

No question. We used a single hose one for years and it was way better than the window units in almost every sense (except for the above mentioned efficiency issue). Setup is simple, you can move/point it to a more desirable location, breakdown at the end of summer was simple, and ours was remote controlled (though this seems more common on window units too these days).

CmdrShepard ,

As it says, these are people forced into retirement. As a counter anecdote, both my parents had to retire early for health reasons even though they couldn’t really afford it and are now on disability plus they had to take withdrawals from Social Security early so they get a reduced payment.

CmdrShepard ,

Water sensors are a cheap investment that can be reused later. You can also buy inexpensive ones from Tuya or Aqara that are smart and should be able to notify you on your phone over just a simple one that beeps.

Just a couple days ago police shot and killed a pregnant shoplifter for driving out of a parking spot when the cop stepped in front of the vehicle. Funny how they felt justified in murdering her in that case and here they feel justified in murdering people for standing in the road with a sign.

    CmdrShepard ,

This is the way to go. Find the car you want online first, secure financing from a local CU second (shop around), and then go to the dealership third. Don’t walk in without the financing or they’ll give you some BS high rate even with excellent credit.

Braga: ‘I still cringe when I hear it.’ Apparently, it was a long road to the franchise’s most despised title music ( www.slashfilm.com )

Working from the oral history in The Five Year Mission: The next 25 years, this is a fascinating deep dive that answers the question “How did a recycled cover of a 1998 song written for Rod Stewart, ‘Where My Heart Will Take Me’ aka ‘Faith of the Heart’ become the title music for Enterprise?”...

I hated it until they changed it in season 2 or 3 and then I realized that I hated the new version even more and in retrospect the original wasn’t quite that bad.

Anyone else out there who actually really loved Discovery's S1 style of Klingons?

I am the kind of person who enjoys “big weird” scifi like Stanisław Lem. Stories about trying to relate to and find common ground with something so alien that the prospect of even understanding is basically hopeless. Star Trek usually doesn’t do stories that, which makes sense as it often uses alien races as allegories or...

    CmdrShepard ,

Plus with the success of The Orville, it shows that you don’t need to do a ‘gritty reboot’ to be successful in modern times. The Orville is basically off-brand TNG.

On the viewer’s part or the creator’s?

If the former, how far do you take it? Instead of Picard’s complicated, diplomatic solutions to complex problems, what if he just used mind control to resolve every conflict? What if they just made the Enterprise’s shields invincible to damage so there’s never a risk of the ship getting damaged? The show has to exist within a framework of rules and ‘truths,’ for lack of a better word, or everything becomes meaningless because nothing matters and there are no stakes.

If the latter, I’d have to agree. It has to be difficult to jump into a franchise with so much history, but it feels like they changed the Klingons just so they could put their own “stamp” on the show. What reason is there to change them in the first place? Humans and Vulcans still look the same.

I’d be more worried about mold than lint.

Fixing my drain required breaking laws, pissing off IRC users, breaking tools…

It was taking around 24 hours to drain just ~1—3 liters of water in my kitchen sink. Probably comparable to IV drip speeds. After a huge effort and expense, I finally fixed it without demolishing the kitchen – which would have been my next and final move¹. Sequence of events:...

    CmdrShepard ,

I subscribe to a Youtube channel of a guy who does nothing but clean drains with a pressure washer setup and have looked at doing similar work on my own house and it’s actually pretty reasonable (like $120). I’m sure OP spent more in time and money than that and could have possibly damage their plumbing with the chemical cocktails.

From watching enough videos, OP’s clog may have been from wipes, sanitary products, roots, grease/fat, or a broken pipe. Almost none of these can be fixed with chemicals.

    CmdrShepard ,

I’m a huge fan of the first few seasons. When Amazon bought them I feel the quality really dropped (especially in the set pieces/visual effects) but the story is still good. A lot of people didn’t care for the first season or Miller’s character but I really enjoyed it.

    CmdrShepard ,

I binged all 10 seasons and while the last couple were a drag to get through, I totally enjoyed it. The episodic format is great.

Also enjoyed Atlantis though I was skeptical of it and the characters at first, but they really grew on me.

I also enjoyed Universe but it was more of a dark, gritty show along the same vein as BSG. It got canceled pretty quickly so there isn’t much to get into though.

    CmdrShepard ,

There are multiple star trek communities…

Edit: wow your post history reads like a jealous ex-boyfriend days away from receiving a no-contact order from the court.

    CmdrShepard ,

I see a lot of projection here.

It’s so, so pathetic and shit.

    it’s all you have lol.

What were you saying about how awful you think this place is, yet you have to keep making posts here for some strange, totally not unhinged reason?

    CmdrShepard ,

I love how he claims users “nearly tore apart 3-4 communities” but also “there’s only 11 of you here”

    CmdrShepard ,

But, my favorite ship is the Omega class destroyer from Babylon 5. (sue me)

    CmdrShepard ,

If you’re referring to Discovery, I think the whole time jump saved the show. I really struggled through the first couple seasons but now I look forward to new episodes. It’s still not peak Trek, but I’ve been waiting for something that doesn’t center around Kirk or the Kirk era (similar to Star Wars and the Skywalkers) but instead jumps further ahead than previous eras for decades now.

    CmdrShepard ,

Plus it ties in with the previous episode where she and Number One reflect on their augments, family history, and years of feeling shame about who they are.
