Ah yes, the only two functions, reproduction and opening jars /s

Recently, scientists successfully induced the stem cell of a male mouse to transform into an egg instead of sperm.

The resultant litter was in all respects normal and, while we are talking about baby steps (ha) with mice instead of humans, I'm sure that would be a when, not an if.

The biggest immediate concern would probably be depression and osteoporosis. Pretty sure the depression wouldn't be very new, sadly, for anyone still paying attention to anything around them at all, but it doesn't need to be added to the pile for a demographic that already doesn't tend to reach out.

Uh....then you have kids? If you want them? I do not think I understand the question.

Can you please let Radar know I said they're the best dog? That for hundreds of years, researchers have been collaborating to create scientifically the most perfect possible pup and that was Radar?

I've little to no experience with panic attacks and wasn't even aware they could last that long, but I hope things ease up for you soon.

And those who were stubborn enough to keep looking at all options despite what could easily feel overwhelming to a non-tech user.

I am not very tech-inclined, so trying to understand the fediverse as a whole felt like deep water and lemmy really didn't do any job at all at explaining what it was I was committing to by choosing an instance, when I didn't even know what instances were and had trouble finding out.

Since Lemmy was and is by far the most mentioned alternative and I found it too anxiety-inducing, it's mostly stubborn desperation that brought me to kbin. Which says nothing to how much I'm genuinely enjoying it here, to be clear, I was just relieved to have a simple option at that point.

Being made anxious by a new platform isn't great and I would guess that most people who didn't like the experience they had with Lemmy didn't bother clicking other links that would take them to the same fediverse. They're likely to assume they won't enjoy that one either, and resign themselves elsewhere.

So kbin naturally got fewer users just by word of mouth, and then the necessary brief isolation didn't help either when people were still getting comfortable here. I don't particularly mind it other than those rare times I'm accidentally excluded, either by a question addressed only to Lemmy or their recent version of r/place disappointingly being incompatible with kbin.

Something similar can be said about kbins "all" page at the moment too though. I rather wish they'd give the users the tools to tailor their feeds according to their own preferences instead of interfering themselves. "All" should be all, excluding whatever my personal filters & settings get rid of.

Is it....not that? Am I misunderstanding or mistaken. My experience has been a very "All" experience, I thought, only playing an endless whack-a-mole with porn, sports, and whatever really good sub is sadly dominating the rest of the feed.

What would you mean by tailoring?

Someone advised me half an hour ago to award them to comments talking about other platforms, and I think I'm gonna go with that one for myself

Oh, I don't know if you've heard the rumors that they may be planning to move to an irl cash system to reward high karma earners, but the genitals are next.

"Site I only still care about to laugh at thinks I am going to give it my tax information." I'll have to think real hard about that one.

Investors should themselves have a good think about how the CEO that self-reported making zero profit in over a decade as one of the most popular social media sites — a site whose ad revenue has stuttered in the face of what is officially a month long protest — can afford to be handing out money to shitposting bot farms now.

I just saw someone mentioning that on mastodon maybe ten minutes ago, and then it instantly made sense. How innovative he is. Even when he can see the fallout before engaging in it

I just assume drunken beatings were the only love he experienced as a child. Negative attention is still attention, and it's the most likely explanation for choosing negative as your default.

On the plus side, it always makes me stop and appreciate my own life. I could be that guy, but the only salty nuts I'm gargling are pistachios

It is not Lemmy or kbin, it is the fediverse. ( kbin.social )

I don't think many people understand that if they use Lemmy or kbin, they are posting to the fediverse. There are other platforms and will be more to come. Referring to a post on "Lemmy" or "kbin" is like saying you saw a post on your Windows or Mac computer....

Nepenthe ,
@Nepenthe@kbin.social avatar

I just consistently mention it because it's a huge topic atm and it's to everyone's benefit to clarify. If I'm over here talking about how I'm SO glad I can mute instances willy-nilly as I please but don't mention I'm doing that from kbin, that's going to send a lot of frustrated lemmings scrambling through their settings.

Generic is "(the) fedi/fediverse." But where I'm specifically from may carry connotations in UI or culture for those here, and those not here would maybe prefer a platform name they can actually look up, as has already happened to me once.

I do think the "Blaaah, we got X amount of users and we're the biggest in the fedi!" posts are borderline odd, because yeah, we're not going head to head anymore. The tribalism we've had drilled into us for decades, we have no need of now and I don't wanna see any of the platform politics that's always been in the past. Thankfully, it seems to be stemming from genuine enjoyment instead of elitist gloating, and it keeps itself to a minimum.

I think just Lemmy, kbin, mastodon, etc. naturally implies the platform-specific -verse, doesn't it? I think "Hey, Lemmy--" posts addressing the entire fediverse are being accidentally myopic, but "Hey, Lemmy [users]" would be understandable, given a need to discuss our UI differences. The former is fairly common atm, though, which I admit is faintly annoying to see on my kbin feed. I feel so left out.

Can we please remember to talk about things on the fediverse besides the fediverse itself? ( kbin.social )

Having spent a lot of time on Mastodon... There are tons of people there talking about federated and self-hosted services, software freedom, censorship, encryption, tech regulation... A very narrow range of topics directly surrounding the fediverse get a lot of attention....

Nepenthe ,
@Nepenthe@kbin.social avatar

If not the more general subs, there's an indie community both on kbin.social and also lemmy.world. Both pretty small atm, but that's the point in building them up

    That won't go well either, in the long run. Advertisers will catch on to how many "people" are viewing their ads without ever clicking on anything and put their funds elsewhere.

    Yeahhh... Out of all those I tried, that was by far my favorite. So much so that I didn't even remember how unintuitive the regular website was til I had to shoot someone a quick message, fumbled uselessly through my chats, and realized I really had to google how to find my inbox on a site I've used every day for four years.

    Despite his stated disinterest, there's apparently been talk about the dev re-releasing it for Lemmy instead and I can't tell if there's truth to that or not. The app store listing seems like some unnecessary work for just a placeholder.

    ......but I don't use lemmy, so I'll just have to see what Artemis is about.
