What about the FBI and the airforce bombing black neighborhoods in 1985? Like literally bombing them. Was that the kind of top down governance you want?

[News] Wisconsin lawsuit asks new liberal-controlled Supreme Court to toss Republican-drawn maps ( apnews.com )

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A lawsuit filed Wednesday asks Wisconsin’s newly liberal-controlled state Supreme Court to throw out Republican-drawn legislative maps as unconstitutional, the latest legal challenge of many nationwide that could upset political boundary lines before the 2024 election....

@elscallr@kbin.social avatar

At that point the courts are wrong. The check the that court has on the legislature has is to say something isn't Constitutional, but that's supposed to be a death knell. If it's just ignored, if the Court is just ignored, then there's really nothing they can do. I'm talking about SCOTUS, and Ohio largely modeled their system of the (at the time) emerging federal one. Ohio citizens are apparently ok with what their legislature is doing.

He might prefer that to being thrown in jail. Either way we win.

It's like gambling on a stock. You can buy in on the way up and as long as you bail at the right time you can come out on top. Stay just a little too long, though, and you'll come away worse than you started.

elscallr ,
@elscallr@kbin.social avatar

Well.. me, I guess. I've made about a hundred thousand, here or there, but I'll admit I'm an outlier most likely.

I get what you're saying but I'm not sure it really works that way on the fediverse... Could be convinced either way, though.

News: Sen. Elizabeth Warren wants to build a new agency to police Big Tech ( www.theverge.com )

The bill, sponsored by Sens. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and Lindsey Graham (R-SC), would create a new agency called the Digital Consumer Protection Commission that would be empowered to go after giant tech firms for a slew of anti-competitive behaviors and failing to protect consumer privacy.

I don't trust a bunch of crusty trust fund relics to regulate anything. You have to actually understand the technology to not make an absolute shit show of it, and they don't.

@elscallr@kbin.social avatar

This is an excellent blep, Scooty is a pro to be sure.

elscallr ,
@elscallr@kbin.social avatar

It's much more likely it's a matter of preventing their detection technology from falling into the hands of people that would wish to circumvent it.

These allegations are shameful and unfounded, the pup is clearly a good boy or girl who is being framed.

Making the United States a union of sovereign territories instead of a country with a powerful federal government sounds like a familiar idea.

They wouldn't be national enemies anymore

The person I replied to did:

The US is probably not going to survive as a unified nation for very long, and honestly, it probably shouldn’t.

Well it wasn't just me, it was the people that established the country.

If two men were at each other's throats a casual "they're gonna end up kicking the shit out of each other, bet" wouldn't be entirely unexpected. Why do you think it's sexist?

elscallr ,

Watching people pummel the shit out of each other has been a source of entertainment for humanity since the first two people did it.

People are fine shitting all over the Constitution when it's shit they want but now you're all pissed? There's a reason this shit was there from the beginning and everyone watered it down again and again and now this dumb shit is happening and it's just your chickens coming home to roost.

How come there is very little Kbin SEO for individual posts? Also, what are tags/badges? ( kbin.social )

Maybe someone smarter than me can explain things, but It's been about a month since I've started the process of creating a magazine to support the reddit/discord community I've helped mod for the past 4 years... but I've noticed that zero posts show up in google search....

elscallr ,
@elscallr@kbin.social avatar

The search engines are going to have to deal with that. However you can provide context in the instance in the form of a canonical URL, to tell a search engine where content originated.

elscallr OP ,
@elscallr@kbin.social avatar

Well that's three, there are at least 1200 more and that's not including the YouTube and Instagram like sites that are, or could be, federated, and they all have slightly different feature sets depending on what software they're running.

That's what I'm talking about. A way to describe those feature sets in a word.

elscallr OP ,
@elscallr@kbin.social avatar

Yeah I get how it works but I have problems explaining it to someone without going on a rant and explaining activitypub. I suppose at this stage that's to be expected, before everyone knew what a website was someone had to tell people about http.

Republicans try to stop military’s electrification with mind-bogglingly dumb proposals ( electrek.co )

Several Republican representatives have proposed amendments to the National Defense Authorization Act to try to stop the Pentagon’s electrification. The proposals sound so mind-bogglingly dumb that they look like they were written by 19th-century Luddites or the fossil fuel industry itself....

elscallr ,

Well they're pretty good at stopping bullets. That's not an argument against anything, it's just a logistical problem.

Ex-FBI official says GOP is telling agents: 'If you investigate our party, you are going to pay the price' ( www.rawstory.com )

Former FBI official Frank Figliuzzi wasn't happy after watching Republicans grill FBI director Christopher Wray in the House Wednesday. While Democrats questioned Wray for ignoring warnings about Jan. 6, Republicans sought answers to a slew of conspiracy theories and culture war grievances that go a...

Look I'm no fan of Republicans but I'm not about to defend the FBI. They literally gave Philly PD two pounds of C4 to bomb residences in Philadelphia in 1985.

Let's not pretend they're some bastion of democratic values, they're still feds.

A distro and desktop environment recommendation for an old laptop (Read all of it, please.) ( kbin.social )

'sup? So, I am a beginner that has an old Samsung laptop from 2013 with an i3 4005U, a GeForce 710M, 500GB HDD (I will probably upgrade it to an SSD, but not for now.), 4GB 1600 MHz DDR3L RAM (the same for the HDD, will probably upgrade to 8GB some time.). It currently has Windows 10 Home but Linux is probably lighter (right?)...

elscallr ,
@elscallr@kbin.social avatar

As far as a Desktop Environment goes take a look at XFCE. It's gtk based so will run all the Gnome style apps and look pretty, it's super lightweight, and infinitely customizable.

If you're keen on an Ubuntu flavor, the Xubuntu comes with it bundled. You can get it on any other distro, too, though.

Imgur links suck ( kbin.social )

Most Fediverse software supports image uploads, so there's no reason to use Imgur for image hosting. Hell, even on my small single-user server (atomicpoet.org), image hosting is easy peasy. Not only is Imgur not needed, they're an annoyance for those of us who are used to seeing images natively on the Fediverse....

elscallr ,
@elscallr@kbin.social avatar

Image hosting is always easy, it's never cheap. That's the difference between an instance with tens of thousands of users and your server with 1.

Speaking as one of the conservatives I love this lol. Fuck this guy and fuck his company. This isn't being "cancelled" this is just capitalism and I'm here for it.

elscallr ,
@elscallr@kbin.social avatar

My recommendation is just don't buy into one distro too much. Play around with a few, shit play around with 10. Figure out your desktop environment, your terminal, install your files onto a separate partition you can use from anything.

The big changes between distributions don't really affect every day consumers. They can all run Gnome, KDE, XFCE, bash, fish... They can all run all the software. A few, like your Debian or Fedora based might have a couple better drivers, but even then they'll all be pretty comparable. They all have package managers that are usually some flavor of apt, yum, or Flatpak. If you want to use terminal utilities they all come with coreutils. Every one is good to learn to code.

Play with what you want, abandon it, and play with something else.

Advice from someone who's been daily driving a Linux box since 1998 and who uses it every day professionally.

elscallr ,
@elscallr@kbin.social avatar

Oh that's totally fair. I guess my point is if you're just looking for something that'll work then that's just about any of them. I'd pick the one with the most results on StackOverflow because it's most likely to have any issues resolved. And even then, to be honest, that's just a habit from 25 years ago when issues were a thing, these days pretty much everything just works.

If you're asking about distro recommendations I guess I expect a distro hopper.

elscallr ,
@elscallr@kbin.social avatar

Aww he even let you think you surprised him, what a good boy

elscallr ,
@elscallr@kbin.social avatar

Yeah anyone not using randomly generated passwords at this point is just fucking up. I know exactly three of my passwords: the one for my email, the one for my password manager, and the one I'm likely to give out (streaming services and such). The worst anyone can do with the third is cancel my Disney+ or something, and it's really only given to my mom and sisters.

elscallr ,
@elscallr@kbin.social avatar

Well this was a JWT compromise, I think, but even still people use really bad passwords all the time. A salt is stored with the user record. The salt's job is to invalidate rainbow tables. If you have a collection of a million bad passwords you can check them all salted in a second or two.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced the passing of a law that could render driver’s licenses and other forms of identification from several states invalid, including Vermont. ( www.mychamplainvalley.com )

As of July 1, in addition to Vermont, four other states’ IDs will face extra scrutiny from police, as they may provide forms of identification to applicants who do not give proof of citizenship or legal status:...

elscallr ,
@elscallr@kbin.social avatar

The bill specifically states forms of identification, not licenses to drive. I'm not sure identification would fit the definition of full faith and credit, since every state gets to decide what identification means and is required for.

Driver's licenses are a different story. Those would be respected if valid in another state.

Full Faith and Credit shall be given in each State to the public Acts, Records, and judicial Proceedings of every other State. And the Congress may by general Laws prescribe the Manner in which such Acts, Records and Proceedings shall be proved, and the Effect thereof.

Not saying it's right, but it's probably legal.

Ngl I miss all the niche communities from reddit that actually had content. Like there's nothing for The West Wing or The Wire on the lemmybin. Last hype shit for Starfield on the largest Starfield Magazine was like 3 days ago.

Not that I really need or get that much out of that content but it's shit I like to talk about. And sure I can create the communities or post the content, but it's like yelling into an abyss right now.

That'll change as more people join, of course, it's just a part I miss.
