If that is something people want, then there will be distributions integrating AI tools as default configuration. But probably mostly open source solutions only. And most people maybe don't want AI applications, so there will always be AI free distros available. As long as it is not proprietary and controlled by one company only, I don't see any problem with integrating AI.

@Pons_Aelius I was reporting the posts previously, but gave up.d

thingsiplay ,
@thingsiplay@kbin.social avatar

@Pons_Aelius We could migrate RedditMigration to a new "NeoRedditMigration". :D

I'm looking for an Add-on Manager. I have way too many addons. I enable many of them for development, disable them afterwards. I can't search Installed Addons. What do? ( media.kbin.social )

I am in a bit of a pickle. I'm a developer, and I also use some crypto social media, and I also like downloading media sometimes, I do a lot of stuff. I modify CSS, I script & hack the web, yadda yadda. Basically what this means is I ended up with like 50 addons I juggle-enable-disable all the time. This is extremely frustrating...

thingsiplay ,
@thingsiplay@kbin.social avatar

@kill How about creating a second Firefox profile dedicated to development? I did that for a different reason, to create a PDF viewer using Firefox. It has the right settings and addons only active when viewing a PDF. This idea could be used to have a dedicated development environment which does not interfere with your personal data and configuration. And you can back them up and restore individually.

The Reddit Protest Is Finally Over. Reddit Won. ( gizmodo.com )

The last major holdouts in the protest against Reddit’s API pricing relented, abandoning the so-called “John Oliver rules” which only allowed posts featuring the TV host. The article describes it as "the official end of the battle," which seems an overstatement to me, but it's the certainly the end of the initial phase....

@mojo True. He made a good introduction into both tiling window managers and holding off his own opinion/decision until end of video and only spoke 2 minutes out of 38 as a final verdict. He also do not push people into one system, just offering options and an opinion. In my mind this was well done first look for people to decide what they try next and what they await.

However it should be noted this was all in X11 and not Wayland.

thingsiplay ,
@thingsiplay@kbin.social avatar

@esty To be fair, the suggestion to use these extensions is good. But I prefer Firefox. It was the only way I could use Reddit. kbin and Lemmy are useable by default, even though it has some problems too. And dense people are everywhere, in Reddit, in Lemmy, in kbin, in Twitter. That does not mean everyone is one. Just the chance to hit an idiot is higher on Reddit and Twitter, because idiots would never consider switching from mainstream and shit on others.

And that's good. Good people switch, idiots stay on Reddit. Best filter ever. :D

[SomeOrdinaryGamers installs Arch] I Installed The Hardest System Known To Man... ( youtu.be )

Hello guys and gals, it's me Mutahar again! This time I deleted and destroyed my system just to rebuild it from the ground up and to teach you how to install what many fedora-tippers call the "hardest system" known as Arch Linux. Check out the install guide here and have a great day! Thanks for watching!

thingsiplay OP ,
@thingsiplay@kbin.social avatar

@adonis

He is talking about Gentoo and LFS (being harder) in the beginning phase of the video. And in general he does talk a lot meme talks and don't mean it literally. It's probably just a joke or a wink to a friend of him using Fedora.

Other than that I appreciate his take on the installation, explaining all the things along the way. And with the 3.5 million subscribers, I think it will reach and teach a lot users to Arch and Linux in general. His content isn't even Linux centric, that's why this tutorial on the main channel is a highlight to me.

@Technological_Elite I don't understand what "Reddit for Lemmy" means. Is this some sort of application to convert Reddit posts to Lemmy or access through Lemmy?

thingsiplay ,
@thingsiplay@kbin.social avatar

@OpenStars This article sucks, because Beehaw is "just" another Lemmy instance. The article should have mentioned Kbin instead.

thingsiplay , (edited )
@thingsiplay@kbin.social avatar

@curiosityLynx The name is written out fully automatically when I click "Add comment"; kbin, the instance where I am, will put full identifier automatically. But on posting it only shows the "id name" without "instance part", but links to the account. Like in this situation with your name. My guess is, the person is still tagged correctly and only the HTML link name is shown in the browser.

I just wish it would link to the actual post or reply directly, instead the person. With the ability to preview on mouse hover (just like how it works on person accounts, at least for me on the desktop browser). This would make discussions more clear.

thingsiplay ,
@thingsiplay@kbin.social avatar

@Ferk Interesting. I have checked the link from you, to see it from their perspective. And sure enough that won't show me a link too, BUT... The guy from kglitch.social has a link. What I think happening is following: Because I respond to the guy in the same instance kbin.social, it won't put the entire name. I know this from Mastodon, where if we are in the same instance, I don't need to put the instance id to tag someone. And because the guy from kglitch is not in the same instance, it will automatically create a full id reference, which every instance render as a link.

Hopefully I could explain what I think is happening. Maybe it is not an issue with kglitch itself, but how Kbin works.

@edinbruh Does anyone treat app reviews seriously?

thingsiplay ,
@thingsiplay@kbin.social avatar

@Sentinian True. I don't use Google app store (or Apple) since years and totally forgot that. Maybe the algorithm of the shop will give recommendations based on the ratings.

How come there is very little Kbin SEO for individual posts? Also, what are tags/badges? ( kbin.social )

Maybe someone smarter than me can explain things, but It's been about a month since I've started the process of creating a magazine to support the reddit/discord community I've helped mod for the past 4 years... but I've noticed that zero posts show up in google search....

thingsiplay ,
@thingsiplay@kbin.social avatar

@raphael Why is that? To prevent the site and posts becoming ad focused? I mean I can see that as a benefit. But on the other side, content that is not indexed by search machines is not much different from Discord. I always criticized Discord content for not being indexed, when arguing with my bro, and tell why Reddit (or any other open platform) is much better to post. Honestly, kbin disallowing crawlers to index the site is a big blow to me! I don't like that at all.

thingsiplay ,
@thingsiplay@kbin.social avatar

@raphael I didn't know the instances would copy the messages. Interesting! I think search engines need to be redesigned to respect robots of the origin instance then. If they are not designed for this, it surely looks local. That's kind of a mess then, from search engine perspective.

Strange enough, if I search with my search engine based on SearXNG the terms "final fantasy site:kbin.social", then it finds a few links. They are only based on tags or person, not the actual content. So maybe use tags, if you want to get indexed anyway.

I think the rush to recreate communities is a bad idea. ( kbin.social )

If you recall reddits growth many of their communities evolved as offshoots of a single generic community. This made it easier for people to see discussions they normally would not get involved in, and once the posts in a similar category reached critical mass it moved to a sub Reddit....

thingsiplay ,
@thingsiplay@kbin.social avatar

@Brkdncr Beehaw is doing it exactly like that.

thingsiplay ,
@thingsiplay@kbin.social avatar

@Eggyhead Does have Kbin the ability to give ownership of a magazine to someone else?

thingsiplay ,
@thingsiplay@kbin.social avatar

@Galapagon Only if it is linear. I just made a free form out of the blue diagram by hand to demonstrate what I mean:

I just found out that not all of my Reddit comments had been deleted despite my profile page showing otherwise. ( kbin.social )

TL;DR: even if your delete script confirms a full wipe and your Reddit profile page shows zero comment, there may still be comments left over (that you can find through a search engine and delete manually on Reddit)....

thingsiplay ,
@thingsiplay@kbin.social avatar

@anon Reddit is known for bringing deleted comments back, without your consent. That's especially bad for people who also delete the account, because they have no control anymore (I mean even less). Pretty scummy. More people should be aware of this issue.

thingsiplay ,
@thingsiplay@kbin.social avatar

@JohnEdwa The bots should not even hit the limit, otherwise its a hint for any anti-bot detection. Just create lot of small bots staying low on threshold to be detected. Together with an AI, then the missing bot detection utility and some missing moderators, Reddit should become a bigger pile than it is already.

Is there a way to create a temporary container that will disappear as soon as I close the tab? ( kbin.social )

I know there are addons, but would be nice to have something native built in instead of having to trust an addon. Current method without addons that I know of is creating a container then deleting it, but that's not as convenient and pretty cumbersome....

@ImaginaryFox Why not use Private Mode instead?

thingsiplay ,
@thingsiplay@kbin.social avatar

@ImaginaryFox I see. That's reasonable. I also had Temporary Containers in my head, but didn't suggest it as you wanted a native solution. Didn't even notice how old last update was! Unfortunately from my view and additional research, could not find a solution for you. It would be nice to have a "Open in New Temporary Container for Tab", that is managed temporarily and automatically deleted after closing tab.

Deleting my Reddit comments was a strange experience. ( kbin.social )

It wasn't the fact that there was a limit to see 1000 comments but what they were. The vast majority of my 12 years on Reddit I spent talking about dungeon and dragons 5th edition (DnD 5e) which I started playing early in is lifestyle. It was my first role playing game and I got sucked into the Internet to learn more. Before my...

thingsiplay ,
@thingsiplay@kbin.social avatar

@dumples If I were deleting my comments, I would try to archive them offline for myself.

thingsiplay ,
@thingsiplay@kbin.social avatar

@dumples OH, that's great! How did you do that? I would like to archive my comments too, if there is an easy way. Is there some tool for mass downloading (and probably deleting?).

thingsiplay ,
@thingsiplay@kbin.social avatar

@sneakyninjapants I know some people complained that Reddit would reinstate all comments that was deleted by hand, every single one. So if you delete your account, maybe Reddit will bring the comments back after some time. I didn't delete my account so far, only logged out and not logged in since. As I'm in the EU, Reddit probably has to provide such an option to download and delete my comments, but I'm not sure. Not going to log in for the moment. I will have this in mind though, thanks for point it out.

thingsiplay ,
@thingsiplay@kbin.social avatar

@wave_walnut Thanks, the recap was important to understand what happened so far. As it seems, the writing was on the wall. Now I understand why so many was against Red Hat, similar to how they were against Canonical (but for other reasons).

thingsiplay ,
@thingsiplay@kbin.social avatar

@exohuman It's not hating everything, but criticizing certain aspects they did in the past or they do now. I don't know how long you are using Linux, but I did start with Ubuntu in 2008 and used it exclusively for 13 years (approx.). Just because a company was good in the beginning does not mean it is now too.

Examples why is listed in the above linked video. In the past, Canonical was criticized for not working on Wayland and instead creating their own alternative that is MIR. Due to the popularity of Ubuntu, that would make things in the Linux world complicated as MIR and Wayland need to be developed and supported. Instead using GNOME or any other existing desktop environment, they started their own. While I found that perfectly okay, in the beginning it looked like focus on tablets and was not good in the beginning (I actually liked Unity desktop environment later).

Now they are pushing Snaps, which will create another eco system that besides Flatpak. And it is mostly just for Ubuntu. Snaps were bad in the beginning, so it got a bad image from the start. That's not all. The servers for Snaps is proprietary. And you can't just add another source to Snaps, like you can do with Flatpaks. Meaning if you have your own server with Snaps delivery, you need to opt out of Snapcraft .io servers from Canonical. Do you want know more? One of the reasons I left Ubuntu was that Snaps are spamming the loop devices (most don't care). Then there is this clunky PPA system, which has some problems too (and why Canonical ties to switch to Snap instead).

What else do we have? Ah yes. Do you know about the Amazon incident? Ubuntu had spyware built-into their search functionality, where Amazon would get search queries without the consent of the users.

And not all, there was plans to drop support for 32 bit libraries, which would make gaming with Steam really bad. Obviously this is not something everyone cares, but that was an important reason for many not to use Ubuntu anymore. Because of the uncertainty.

I am not suggesting that everything is bad! Just listing a few things why the community started to dislike Ubuntu. Also nowadays nothing innovative comes from Ubuntu; it's stale, it's boring. Which is fine if you like that, but that is not innovative or leading anymore. The landscape of alternatives changed. I personally don't hate Canonical or Ubuntu. I stopped using it for several other reasons too, not just because of the listed problems. Some exaggerate and start hating in the internet.

thingsiplay ,
@thingsiplay@kbin.social avatar

@falsem I remember. But at that time, Steam OS 2 was already based on Debian and not Ubuntu anymore. Steam OS 1 was based on Ubuntu if I remember correctly. Therefore what Ubuntu does wouldn't affect Valve anyway. So I don't know how much this played a role in switching to Arch. So the timing might be just coincidence.

@thingsiplay@kbin.social avatar

@staticlifetime I have some suggestions for addition: https://kbin.social/m/linuxgaming without the underscore in name exists. And as you have linked to a general purpose Open Source community, maybe you are interested into a gaming focused one as well https://kbin.social/m/opensourcegames .
