120 is the lower limit for killing stuff off. Not much will live or grow at a sustained 120.

I leave mine at 120 and every Sunday it kicks up to 135 for an hour for peace of mind.

i think there's a state-level issue going on too. the gov would need to appoint someone and i don't know that's something he wants to do right now.

Fixing my drain required breaking laws, pissing off IRC users, breaking tools…

It was taking around 24 hours to drain just ~1—3 liters of water in my kitchen sink. Probably comparable to IV drip speeds. After a huge effort and expense, I finally fixed it without demolishing the kitchen – which would have been my next and final move¹. Sequence of events:...

did you snake it from the cleanout? the pipe outside that's designed to "clean out" clogs from the clog side?

What’s wrong with this? You can easily disable access from your google account. When Reddit gets its password database stolen you won’t need to worry about it.

What should I do about cracks in the foundation/crawl space? ( lemmy.world )

Newer home owner here. I have these cracks on the foundation of the house. Behind them is a crawl space open to dirt. How should I fix or address these? Do they need to be fixed? I try and DIY as much as I can so don’t be afraid to suggest a DIY solution. I’m also not above getting professional help, I just haven’t had to...

Brkdncr ,

I’m not an engineer.

If the crack is moving then you need to address it pronto. If it’s not moving and has been there for years then it’s probably fine.

How come there is very little Kbin SEO for individual posts? Also, what are tags/badges? ( kbin.social )

Maybe someone smarter than me can explain things, but It's been about a month since I've started the process of creating a magazine to support the reddit/discord community I've helped mod for the past 4 years... but I've noticed that zero posts show up in google search....

Brkdncr ,

Wow I wish this were changed. Lots of good content to be discovered here.

I think the rush to recreate communities is a bad idea. ( kbin.social )

If you recall reddits growth many of their communities evolved as offshoots of a single generic community. This made it easier for people to see discussions they normally would not get involved in, and once the posts in a similar category reached critical mass it moved to a sub Reddit....

It also might have something to do with the people running the show are now being tasked with real work and it turns out they aren’t good at their job.

Help repairing crumbling steps ( lemmy.world )

I’m not sure what material or style these steps are, but they’ve started crumbling after water got into a crack and froze during the winter. It seems to be getting worse and I’m wondering how to address it. Is this something that can be patched or do I need to remove all this material and start over?

Brkdncr ,

those steps were going to break at some point.

You can't simply mix up some cement and fix it. Cement doesn't glue to it'self after it's set up. You'll need a special mixture to get anything to stick to it reasonably well.

Plan on getting the steps redone, and patch it with some repair mix for the short term.

Brkdncr ,

Always get whichever is available at your local hardware store.

For battery it’s makita.

For corded it’s harbor freight for little used items or whatever is available from Home Depot, usually ryobi.

Idea: Fediverse community/"subreddit" explorer ( kbin.social )

A problem many have realized is that there are many /tech, /gaming etc. communities in different instances/servers. There is already https://fediverse.observer/ , so I think it wouldn't be too hard to make a service that periodically roams the fediverse, checks for example the last 100,000 submissions of each (or top 100 active...

I think you’re right to be looking and I hope the idea of browsing other instances becomes more native and intuitive.

Brkdncr ,

Cracks are of two types: static or dynamic.

Most static cracks are fine. Cracks that are moving, changing, etc are dynamic and should be inspected by a professional.

I have an ADU that has a huge crack in the slab foundation. But it’s probably been there for 10+ years. I’ll need to spend $20k to dig it out and fix it, or I can simply mostly ignore it.

Brkdncr ,

Can you post a photo of where power is getting to the shed? It should be a breaker sub panel and it should have a “lockout” tab. You can simply throw the breakers and put a lock on the panel.

Brkdncr ,

Put a lock on the breaker panel.

What is a good situation to use a tankless water heater?

We’ve been exploring a thankless solution, but the company that quited us said it isn’t a good idea in our area because the ground freezes in the winter. We don’t live in a super cold area, but it does snow a few times a year and it can get into the single digits of degrees Fahrenheit.

Brkdncr ,

Why do you want tankless? If it’s not for space and “endless” hot water, then tankless may not be right for you.

Consider a heat pump tanked water heater if you’re looking for efficiency improvements.

Fixable or new water heater needed? ( lemmy.world )

Hot water was running out very quickly. I tested voltages, upper element looked good, on the lower the small protective plastic cover over the wires shocked me. I cut the breaker and found this loose wire. And obviously all this rust/mineral build up. If I were to fix I’d try to replace the element but I’m afraid that I...

I’m not contributing much anymore with Apollo gone. The official mobile app doesn’t pull me in like Apollo did. I may be in the minority.
