I bought a used 125 gallon aquarium 6 months ago that I need to reseal and build a new stand for. Got the sealant, lumber, and tools last month. Right now I’m working on procrastinating the actual DIY part.
I feel you man. Let’s not forget about hacked up electricity, shoddy repairs from the previous owners, lower building standards back then and other surprises that make a somewhat doable project turn full teardown.
Please please please go through and double check wiring and housing for your light fixtures if you haven’t. We’ve been here a while and have been renovating as we’re able to afford to (there’s a reason we bought an older house) but that was one of the first things we did and there were nightmares hidden in the ceiling
One of our friends found that wall severely browned and crisped behind the oven after it was improperly installed for decades, lol. Terrifying wiring mistakes too, the type that make your hair stand on end. They were remodeling after bad water damage and found all sorts of terrible surprises.
We had a mold issue stemming from a shower vent not connecting to the roof and just dumping humid air into the attic so we wanted to fix that. Found rotten newspaper from the late 40s as insulation mixed with vermiculite under a thin layer of cellulose, which we treated as asbestos and had that professionally removed. Under that found a whole spiderweb of live knob and tube which wasn’t connected to any devices, was disconnected from many of its knobs, and was missing insulation in many places while it was draped loosely over some metal plumbing up there.
The project started as a disconnected shower vent causing mold, and ended up with a whole rewire of the lighting and outlet circuits in the house. Wild stuff.
We were also swapping out the breakers for ones up to code since we had messed with the circuits, and one a/gfci breaker just kept tripping. Found a light fixture that had evidentially been sparking away up there for who knows how long.
Feels really good to have had eyes on every box in the house and know that what’s there now is leagues safer than what was there before.
Just got a bunch of stuff delivered to build my own hyperhdr tv backlight. Its a relatively small project, but im hoping itll have a huge impact on my viewing experience 😊
Ooo is there a guide you are following for this? I tried setting this up a few years back during covid and never could get it working right. I still think it was faulty hardware but I went through at least a half-dozen grabbers.
Yeah, there is a guide for the raspberry raspberrypi.com/…/raspberry-pi-tv-ambient-lightin…I donk know if hyperhdr would run on weaker, more readily available hardware than the pi 3. ive seen some YouTuber (dont remember who) use Hyperion with a Pico, but here was noticable delay. Since hyperhdr is a more optimised fork of hyperion intended for 4k content, the pico may be able to to run hyperhdr for 1080p content, but im not willing to take that risk. Also check what kind of power supplies you can even get. 5v 15a power supplies apparently don’t exist in Germany, so i had to use 30 led/meter strips instead of 60

Currently putting the finishing touches on a wall-mounted chest of drawers for the workshop, which is holding everything from screws to scrap metal to machinist vices. It’s made of scrap pallet wood and ply and totally hand-tooled (planes/chisels/saws). My workshop is very very small (under 8ft by 9ft) and doubles as my home office, so this baby really frees up major space.

The most immediate project is to rewire all the ceiling lighting in the basement, to get it all on one circuit, while also eliminating a few dim spots and swapping some old flourescent fixtures for some nice dimmable LED panels I got on a sale, for the area that we eventually wanna turn into an entertainment center. I’ve got all the supplies ready, but I keep getting sidetracked by lawn work and issues with the car.
THAT whole project is in service of tearing down and rebuilding the drywall facade walls in the basement, and being able to have working lighting available for that project.
THAT project is in service of finishing waterpoofing the basement after we had a gutter and sump system professionally installed last fall. That eliminated all the issues we had with water seeping up from under the foundation, but there’s still a very small amount that leaks in from over the TOP of the foundation, when there’s heavy-enough rain. For that, we need to rip out the remainder of the walls, which were partially ripped out to install the gutter, and put up a liner directly on the foundation walls that will redirect all water down into the gutter.
THEN we can replace the carpet that we had to rip out after the record-setting rain storm we had last summer that soaked the entire basement.
THEN we can move everything in the garage back intonthe basement.
THEN I can being working on the car that grenaded itself when it threw a timing chain.
Also, does buying a new car count? Cause that was our entire 3-day weekend.
Planning to replace the old TV coax cable with Ethernet cable so everybody in the house gets their own low-latency connection for gaming. The problem is that TV cable is installed in a daisy chain while Ethernet has a star topology, and there’s only room for one cable from the basement to upstairs. So at the moment I’m pondering whether to keep the daisy chain and place a switch in every room, use some sort of MoCA (Ethernet over coax) adapter or go all the way and install fiber.
Also, we should really replace the carpet in the master bedroom with hardwood soon.
I’ll go ahead and say that I’m using a MoCA connection to my main PC, and have no complaints about it at all. It’s the 2.5Gbps by ScreenBeam.
Not sure how exactly that works with the daisy chain, but brief reading seems to indicate that it should be fine to add a MoCA endpoint in each room, unless you wanna just rewire the upstairs with a single switch and Ethernet cables to each room up there, assuming you have room to run all the cables in the upstairs only.
Wow, fancy, you have a PLUG for your TV antenna? I just have the wire coming through the wall from the attic. Although I did think it was rather modern that my antenna was mounted in the attic instead of on the roof.
I really miss the sheer simplicity of the bikes that I used to ride. Specifically, the KLR650 and the carbureted KLX250. Every but of maintenance was easy to DIY. Even a clutch rebuild was just simple. The 250 had the extra bonus of not wanting to cry, when it decided to take a nap.
Those older simple machines are wonderful. The green BMW was my first fuel-injected bike and after the parts bills to fix its dead fuel system, I still prefer carburetors. EFI is convenient but when it breaks it takes specialty tools and knowledge and lots of money to fix. First part I ever bought for that bike, used, was close to $300 on eBay. It was the plate that the fuel pump, fuel filter, and fuel light float mount to, and it has a fuel-tight wiring connection going through it. The ground wire powering both the pump and float switch had broken contact somewhere in there. No way to fix it and make it fuel-safe again. Then there was buying and installing a new fuel filter and pump, replacing in-tank and external fuel lines, installing pressure-safe disconnect fittings, cleaning the fuel injectors… It eventually became worth it. That bike and its big brother are the most comfortable and practical motorcycles I’ve ever owned. Just took a lot to get there.
I’m about to resurrect a 1986 Yamaha XT350 for my partner and that’ll be a much easier and less expensive process than my fancy BMW’s.
Honestly, given the ruckus they've been raising for a while now, my feeling is that Beehaw wants to push themselves away from society as a whole. I don't agree with their perspective, which is part of why I never engage with much of their content or users. All I can say is that I wish them only the best for their echo chamber.
I have been unsubscribing from communities on beehaw and finding their siblings on other instances so that if they decide to leave i have already mostly disconnected from them and my home feed wont become a shell of itself.
It’s less an echo chamber and more simply an attempt at creating an Internet community that doesn’t constantly argue or insult people. Where you treat people like they are smart humans and where others return the same assumption. All different opinions are welcomed. I know I hold a few strong differing opinions than the norm on beehaw and have always been treated with decency. Taking those same opinions in to lemmy general I’ve been called names and attempted to be invalidated instead of people trying to see a different opinion. So if anything it seems like lemmy general is becoming an echo chamber and beehaw is trying to be a respectful discourse community.
The impression I get is that Beehaw is trying to seclude itself not to be an echo chamber, but because an admin saw CP get posted and is traumatized by that, and it’s really highlighting the lack of mod tools. They want to moderate the space to ensure it’s nice (and it’s frankly needed. I made a Beehaw account at one point in time. I reported quite a few not-bigoted-but-still-nasty posts) and right now being federated with everyone makes it way too hard because even if 1% of posts are anywhere from “not nice” to “you literally posted child porn,” 1% of 100 is easy but 1% of 100,000 could be a lot of work.
Ah, yes that too. I was thinking of the defederating with lemmy.world and sh.it.works when I was reading that. But Also, yes, they are likely moving because mod tools on the fediverse are a nightmare. Honestly, I see why the US Congress and major lobbyists want to hold service owners accountable for what their users post. Creating a platform for users to post whatever then not moderating it properly should be and I think is illegal in the USA. The fediverse at heart seems to be designed without any moderation in mind.
