I make a 9-10 hour drive to see my family multiple times a year. I normally stop twice to get gas and use the bathroom, and that's it. Sounds like you'd be adding most of an hour to my travel time each way. I've tried stopping longer and grabbing food, it's not worth it for me.

With that said, I drive 25-40 miles a day the other 360+ days of the year, so it'd really make much more sense for me to have a short range EV and rent something for travel when I have too much luggage to fly.

I'd honestly love to just plug in every night instead of having to spend time getting gas every week. Sure it's only a few minutes, but that's probably a few hours of my life every year. Getting an electric vehicle and renting cars for road trips would honestly make much more sense for me.

Unfortunately, it looks like it'd be financially irresponsible for me to buy an electric car right now while I still have a perfectly functional ICE car.

Solemn ,

Don't forget to plug in your block warmer so you can start up your diesel generator in the cold.

Solemn , (edited )

That would become a 15+ hour trip then...

Edit: On further investigation, it's also not significantly cheaper than flying, and is much more expensive than fuel for driving.

Solemn ,

I'm glad you think I can afford to triple my rent, but that's not happening.

Edit: If you mean the road trip scenario, my family works in various different industries, and the opportunities are better in different cities. That's also not happening.

  1. Technically surprisingly easy, really surprisingly hard.
  2. A giant floor sander, along with the sandpaper and buffing disks to actually use it (extremely expensive, not sure if easily rentable)
  3. No, it will pretty much only look worse if you try to do it in patches. Also, depending on the wood, you may want to do pre-stain treatment, cause some woods just absorb stain really splotchily.
  4. Depending on the finish, could be anything between a few hours to a couple days needed between layers of finish. Some require a month or more of curing before you should put furniture on top. I’d recommend against those, we have more modern finishes that are honestly just better in addition to being more convenient, despite what some people say online. YouTube side by side comparisons are my go to for finding info on this sorta stuff.

Bill Gates has done significant good fighting disease. Still something that should’ve been decided by society, not a single person, but credit where credit is due.

Unfortunately anti vaxxers have destroyed a lot of that legacy anyway.

Solemn ,

He’s not perfect, and your examples show why these sorts of decisions on spending and priority shouldn’t be in the hands of a single person who isn’t even an expert in diseases.

It’s still worth acknowledging that he did plenty to help with polio and malaria, even if it could’ve been done better by another method.

Affordable and decent bird photography setup? (600mm equiv)

I have a Fujifilm camera and decent lens that can do 600mm FF equiv is not cheap. I’m wondering what is the best option for bird photography at that range? There are some tiny 1/2.3 compact cameras like the Sony hx99 that doesn’t seem too good. There also seem to be an option of picking up a m43 camera with a 300mm (600mm...

The current generation flagships and top prosumer mirrorless have action AF probably close enough to on par vs the previous flagship DSLRs. However, anything below that level may still be pretty slow for fast action.

Honest question, what’re your thoughts on the racial reparations discussion? I was surprised to hear that it exists tbh, mostly cause of how impossible it seems as a target. But my understanding is that there are people getting some real attention saying that white people should give enough money that they can’t pay their bills to make up for their privilege.

I’m about 3 injuries into making Rex Kreuger’s roman workbench. Then we can use that to tech tree up and continuously make nicer workshop stuff.

I’ll go ahead and say that I’m using a MoCA connection to my main PC, and have no complaints about it at all. It’s the 2.5Gbps by ScreenBeam.

Not sure how exactly that works with the daisy chain, but brief reading seems to indicate that it should be fine to add a MoCA endpoint in each room, unless you wanna just rewire the upstairs with a single switch and Ethernet cables to each room up there, assuming you have room to run all the cables in the upstairs only.

Solemn ,

4 injuries now, but the end is in sight!

Solemn ,

That’s good work, but is there a good way to fade out the focus more gradually?

Solemn ,

Yeah, I think it’s only such an apparent issue due to the amount of foreground blur. Maybe something you can solve more with composition in the future, to reduce the amount of foreground depth that’s out of focus?

Sebo one works great, it’s honestly so overbuilt I’m more concerned about it wearing holes in upholstery than stalling. Sounds like a jet spooling up.
