Oh that’s the fun part. Everyone discusses mean and median. Mode is in the 35-40 range last I tracked it down. (it wasn’t easy to find and I have my theories about why)
Meanwhile, hundreds of immigrants a day are moved to reception centers all across the country.
You know what? They don’t need expensive charter busses paid for with state taxes - their travel is paid by federal taxes. And they don’t need expensive private security to force people to stay aboard at gunpoint. They aren’t lied to, and they know where they are going. And they aren’t dropped on a sidewalk unannounced - they go to a reception center that has resources for them and knows they are arriving, and they are documented every step of the way. They don’t miss their immigration appointments because their appointments are scheduled near the reception center they move to.
Abbot is spending huge amounts of his state’s money to do a terrible and illegal job of duplicating a TINY portion of what the federal government is doing efficiently every day.
Also, immigration is at the lowest it’s been in 20 years. All this crap Texas is pulling is utterly pointless. We need new people who are eager to work - we don’t need to make child labor legal again. …ucdavis.edu/20-years-declining-immigration-and-d…
Abbott needs to be held accountable for this for once along with all the other bus trips and it sure would be nice if the title said he was involved instead of half way down the article. Our media is infuriating.
I see a lot of alignment in your threads and comments with the things I care about, so please hear this feedback as coming from someone siding with you.
You may want to start using phrases like "darker complexions" instead of "coloured skin," the latter phrase referencing an outdated term of "coloreds" or "colored people" for what we now would call "people of color."
I especially liked that they raised point like the fact that despite the fact that men earn more on average and make up more of the top CEO/Board Members spots, that those things don’t help the bottom segment of boys who are left behind in school and left unsupported.
Their program to try and pull those teens back into post secondary is helpful and I’d be excited to see their long term impacts
He gets 6 months, yet a doctor performing an abortion could face 99 years in prison, $100K+ fines, and lose their livelihood as their medical license is revoked.
This is another reason to get out there and vote! The last day to register to vote is Oct 10. As for the last 44 years, we have 2 weeks of early voting, which starts on October 23, 2024 and ends on Nov 3 with the final day to vote on Nov 5! Check your county website for specific hours, some polling stations may be open during the weekend!
If you want inflation to stop just put extra tax on companies that have increased consumer prices in last 12 months. In 12 months you see that inflation under control again.
Of course this is never going to happen but we all know the reason for inflation.
Just need to make corporate taxes similar to personal ones, but as a percentage basis. Did you have a 40% profit? Okay, you pay 37% in taxes on money earned above that. 35% profit? 33% tax.
Stock buybacks should be considered profit for tax purposes.
If an employee gets paid more than 50% in stock/stock options and the company has more than 10 million in revenue per year, the company should pay taxes on that as well.
If we did that and closed a few other loopholes, we’d probably see companies investing more into the business and prices would also not rise quickly.
That sounds like it would be really difficult to track and implement in practice though. Companies would just bring in very slightly different models with new names, or do a bit of shrinkflation. Tracking like-for-like equivalents would be a nightmare and everything would get tied up in the courts.
It baffles me how a fake case can even have any legitimacy with the court. Yet here we are...SCOTUS is even more a joke now. It's just so tragic their bad faith & buffoonery affects so many people .
It wasn’t even that. The states that seceeded were not fighting for states’ rights, they were fighting against them.
The Fugitive Slaves Act was federal law. The Wisconsin Supreme Court had found that the law was unconstitutional and rejected the requirement to return slaves. Vermont passed the Freedom Act which freed any escaped slaves who reached the state. Kansas had voted to adopt a constitution that prohibited slavery, although it wasn’t admitted as a state until after the Senators from the South resigned.
In their articles of secession, South Carolina specifically cited the federal government’s lack of effort in upholding federal laws, along with Lincoln’s pledge not to force slavery onto new territories added to the Union, as the primary reasons for attempting to leave.
Lincoln was not threatening to abolish slavery, and did not do so until 2 years into the war.
Bigots like to reimagine the Civil War as the scrappy farm-country folks fighting against northern aggression for the right of self-determination, when in fact the opposite was true. It was slave-owning fat cats who wanted to force their will onto abolitionists by way of bigger government and federal legislative overreach.
It was 100 years later when “state’s rights” because a conservative rallying cry, when Southern states were being forced to desegregate during the Civil Rights era.
Don’t let those fuckers continue to rewrite history, casting their forebears as the victims.
If I had to move to my current area now, my rent would be around 50% of my income, and that’s with a job that used to be able to support the whole nuclear family bullshit as little as 20 years ago. I’m like $2k below median family income by myself.
