Some corners look very sharp, but light and deco is more important. Right now it's a sterile look. You need lots of strong artificial light to compensate for the narrow window.

A_A OP , to Ask Science in is this the starting point of a new cosmology ?
@A_A@lemmy.world avatar

i cannot understand everything (far from it) but here is the part where I believe is an alternative explanation for the CMB :

Equations (2.38), (2.39), (2.40), and (2.53) all illustrate that the creation rate of particles with energies larger than the
inverse expansion time, ρ, is exponentially suppressed. Parker [11] has noted that these exponential factor are similar
to those which appear in thermal spectrum at finite temperature
.

count_of_monte_carlo Mod ,

So unfortunately the article they reference by Parker is paywalled. I have access but can’t share it easily. The article is essentially the foundation of quantum field theory in curved space time - in other words the genesis of the standard cosmological model. Cosmological particle production in an expanding universe isn’t an alternative to the Big Bang, it’s an essential part of it.

Leonard Parker’s work is summarized on his Wikipedia page. You can also read an interview with him on the arxiv

May I take another route and ask you what you know about the history of science ... about paradigm shifts ... and about how people very knowledgeable on the current paradigm cannot see (most of times historicaly) that a paradigm shift is about to happen ?

count_of_monte_carlo Mod ,

how people very knowledgeable on the current paradigm cannot see (most of times historicaly) that a paradigm shift is about to happen ?

I’m not sure I’d agree with that assessment. Generally a new model or understanding of physics arises because of known shortcomings in the current model. Quantum physics is the classic example that resolved a number of open problems at the time: the ultraviolet catastrophe in black body radiation, the photoelectric effect, and the interference pattern of the double slit experiment, among others. In the years leading up to the development of quantum theory, it was clear to everyone active in physics that something was missing from the current understanding of Newtonian/classical physics. Obviously it wasn’t clear what the solution was until it came about, but it was obvious that a shift was coming.

The same thing happened again with electroweak unification%20and%20the%20weak%20interaction.) and the standard model of particle physics. There were known problems with the previous standard model Lagrangian, but it took a unique mathematical approach to resolve many of them.

Generally research focuses on things that are unknown or can’t be explained by our current understanding of physics. The review article you linked, for example, details open questions and contradictory observations/predictions in the state of the art.

Thanks again for your time and consideration.

We are discussing here in a community dedicated to science and clearly I have to acknowledge that your arguments here are much better than mine 😆 and that you are very knowledgeable in the current paradigm of science.

Unfortunately for me, there is no community at Lemmy dedicated to the history of science where "very knowledgeable on the current paradigm" would be so telling for historians knowledgeable in this field.

I agree! The history of science is often even more interesting since you get both the science and the personalities of all the people involved, plus the occasional world war in the mix. It’s a shame there isn’t an “askhistorians” type community here.

I think it's a stretch to interpret it as petty when it probably just gave Trip a bit of focus and let his 8 year old nephew shout like "that's my uncle!" or something. Real life astronauts get asked these questions all the time and they're practically deified in our culture.

Move in and put things places. Hang some shit on the walls.

Keep the work light cool white, but use warm white lights to accentuate.

Get some small plants for the windows.

I keep thinking that I’ll install flow meter with my Rachio system so that I can catch leaks. Irrigation systems kind of like classic cars - they require constant maintenance, and shit often breaks. And since I water at night, I often miss major leaks until it’s too late.

As for valve covers, your best bet is just to Google stuff and do some image or shopping searches. Most are pretty ugly, but some fake rocks and fake logs exist.

I ended up burying mine. It’s a pain in the ass, but it’s the price I’m willing to pay to not hear my wife complain about a fiberglass box.

Maybe you could add a small fountain or something to your lawn/garden and hide the valve in it, along the fountain's own valve I guess

Schmoo , to Star Trek in Was it a good thing that SNW explicitly said the Federation is socialist?
@Schmoo@slrpnk.net avatar

I've noticed a trend in some new American media coming out of more openly positive depictions of socialism/communism. The new HBO The Last Of Us series for example has this scene, and the new Fallout series has a more centrist/neoliberal take but at least calls out how the right uses communist as a "dirty word," though she qualifies the statement by first saying "I'm not a communist."

jimhensonslostpuppet OP ,

Yeah, I find it odd because its Hollywood doing these references which isn't exactly a left wing institution.

I love that scene. It's so authentic: hearing a white American describe his successful living arrangement as literal communism but saying it's not communism, and a black American correcting him. 100 years of Red Scare and minority struggle captured in a few lines of dialogue.

jimhensonslostpuppet OP ,

I don't like the implication that full communism is only possible after a zombie apocalypse though lol

More like the dissolvement of US hegemony.

jimhensonslostpuppet OP ,

I don't think that's what they were going with.

Urist ,
@Urist@lemmy.ml avatar

Caveat that I have not played the games, but taking the series at face value they are highly US-centric like most Hollywood productions. It makes no sense arguing on the basis of the series alone what they are going with in this regard, since all the action takes place in the US it is pretty much the scope of the universe, just like in many Americans minds. I tried to make a disjoint point, that was based on how I would interpret it with complete disregard to whatever is canon to the story as a whole, taking what is presented in the first season of the series at face value.

To put this into context with Star Trek, I also find it really boring and non-immersive whenever they hold 21st century America in special consideration. It is just such an obvious way to make a comparison to current state of affairs in one particular country, placating preferences of current pop culture, which is redundant anyway since all science fiction is a universal critique of the current state of affairs anywhere simply by showing a future alternative. A hypothetical sudden end to US hegemony is actually a valid way to make the current US affairs leading up to it special with respect to the future development of mankind, and not just a boring move for views.

jimhensonslostpuppet OP ,

Well I'm not for ending US hegemony so that doesn't sound appealing to me.

Urist ,
@Urist@lemmy.ml avatar

That is understandable if you think only within the paradigm of some select countries dominating the rest, but that is perhaps the biggest obstacle to our gay space communist Star Trek future.

I get about 350-400 both ways which AFAIK is what my Unifi AC-Lite tops at since it's WiFi 5 and it's only got 2 antennas and tops at 80MHz channels. I get about 200-250 on my phone (1+8T) which I think is single stream.

Everything indicates me that's as best as it can be with the set of hardware I have. Signal is solid, latency is solid.

You'll need 802.11ax and/or more MIMO streams to get higher speeds, and/or 160MHz/320MHz channels.

I recommend building your own firewall. There are awesome, FOSS, FreeBSD-based firewall operating systems like pfSense and OPNSense. You can do a whole bunch of cool stuff with them, like block ads, scan incoming traffic for malware, monitor your network, collect data about your connections and visualize them in a nice dashboard and more.
