As some of you may know, szmer.info is a domain that's basically full of spammers, so I blocked it. However upon doing so a thread (https://kbin.social/m/[email protected]/t/344185/I-m-worried-that-in-the-future-we-will-be-forced) I was reading basically disappeared from my feed, and on reloading it all the comments...
Hey-o! I'm a linux user and am thinking of picking up a laptop so that I can work on the couch or travel with it instead of being tethered to my desktop all of the time....
I want to self host my own kbin instance. But dream host (my current host) doesn't let me do postgresql unless I get a dedicated server (very expensive). And I don't want to put it on my home machine because I want professional hosting....
I have a PC I have installed Portainer on, with various docker services (home assistant, jellyfin, etc..) with an ISP supplied router fixing various device IP addresses and reaching out to dyndns....
I got an invite code and so spent a bit of time browsing around because I'd heard good things about it. But I was surprised at how basic and non-diverse it all is. The forums are preset and are very generic. The conversations are definitely better than Reddit, but no better or worse than the ones I've had with people on Fedi....
You will be no better than the people you'll fight against. I've seen it happen on every pro-men subreddit, and if this place isn't aggressively moderated to dispel hopelessness, negativity, and prejudice, it'll just turn into hate....
I've probably spent an hour in the past month just trying to login to kbin, clearing site data, refreshing, retrying. I thought the bug was fixed recently but it's worse than ever now....
So I've loved the minimalist aesthetic of Elementary's Pantheon desktop for a long time now. I even ran Pantheon (on Arch) for a long time but eventually the quirks and bugs got to me and I ditched it. I've now been using KDE for several years but still sometimes get the itch for that aesthetic again....
I have a synology NAS where I backup my photos to. What would be the most cost effective way to encrypt and back up this data without having to purchase another NAS and install it at a family member's house. It would be about 5 TB and would not touch the data unless my NAS completely takes a crap.
In the past week and a half, I've noticed Reddit behaviors starting to try and poison all of the places that people are taking refuge in to get away from the toxicity, myself included. They've started to DDoS Lemmy for a while, which is a Reddit thing to do and what they're notorious of doing whenever they feel they don't like...
So i just checked in on Desktop Beta 117 and noticed that CBR is available in settings so i started to wonder if anyone has any clue if there are plans to implement this on the iPhone/iPad app?

Hey self-hosted community! I thought I'd pose this question to you all as you seem to have a lot of experience with hosting things on limited budgets with usually a single person administering!...
Some thoughts about using the Microblog functionality in kbin and why, controversially, I think it might actually beat Mastodon at it's own game - browsing toots....
