...whoosh.
In no logical sense does the sun orbit our moon. The earth does however indeed orbit the moon (or technically they both orbit a common centre between the earth and the moon).

You seem to be saying that the earth-moon barycente can be logically referred to as just 'the moon' ?

Teppic ,
@Teppic@kbin.social avatar

You've got me there, but by logical extension you are now saying the celestial body the ISS orbits is ...the moon?

Look up hairy black holes. Hawking basically pointed out a paradox.

I think you get spaghettified inside the event horizon?

Teppic ,
@Teppic@kbin.social avatar

They tweaked a few things in the back end when this was discussed a few days ago. I think that did result in everybody being logged out once or twice, but my experience is it's been better since then.

Teppic OP ,
@Teppic@kbin.social avatar

This is true, but twitter also has an opaque algorithm to choose what appears in your feed. By default Mastodon only allows you to view your feed in chronological order, so there is an argument to make that kbin allows a more twitter like experience...

I do also get there is a steeper learning curve with kbin, and it's basically still only an alpha release (it's clearly not going to be right for everyone).

Teppic OP ,
@Teppic@kbin.social avatar

Yes I was also thinking along those lines. When you create a magazine you can choose hastags to associate with it, I briefly considered whether you could create a magazine specifically to have interesting hashtags for you - problem with that is you end up modding the magazine and anybody can see it, join it and post.

I suspect what you describe might come later, it feels like a natural progression from what we have now.

Teppic OP ,
@Teppic@kbin.social avatar

Just spread the word and I'll be happy!

Teppic OP ,
@Teppic@kbin.social avatar

Sure. I don't know anyone on firefish, but this is dansup of pixlfed on that platform:
https://kbin.social/u/@[email protected]/posts
If you want to see posts from somebody on another platform just search them, something like "@ dansup@ pixelfed.social" (without the spaces) and follow them. From then on you should be able to see their posts (note you won't be able to see old posts, just any new ones from when you followed them onwards).

Teppic OP ,
@Teppic@kbin.social avatar

I think this instance would have to be aware of the post, so either

  • Somebody on kbin.social would have to have followed the user who made the post; or
  • A there needs to be direct mention of a user or a magazine here (along the lines of @ random@ kbin.social) in the post.

Once this instance knows about the post I think, yes, it can appear in the Microblog tab.

Teppic ,
@Teppic@kbin.social avatar

True, but searching from a Lemmy instance will still only show you the ones which that one instance knows about. (I think?)

Teppic ,
@Teppic@kbin.social avatar

The article specifically says you can't search federated communities from kbin, but you can from Lemmy. This is just incorrect, both allow you to search local or local and federated.

This image is the whole canvas. To whoever planned this. Hats off my friend, it's brilliant!

Teppic OP ,
@Teppic@kbin.social avatar

It was clearly planned. It was quickly stencilled out by a network of bots / people using a script. It is a precise font size and spacing.

Once it started, well, everybody else understood the assignment, you could watch it filling out in real time.

I want to move to Linux but I need to be able to access my apps that are not supported ( kbin.social )

Hey, I use the Adobe Suite for daily use to build and develop posts and videos for multiple people and can't have my workflow slow down by learning a new application, I've looked into Linux a few times and want to really move over in the future but due to it not having support for Adobe, I'm not sure what to do....

Teppic ,
@Teppic@kbin.social avatar

I've got Windows and Mint dual booting from the same drive, using grub. All seems to work fine for me...

If you click a hashtag e.g. then you'll find much of what is found is from Mastodon.

I'm sure it must be possible to search for a hashtag in a similar way but I've not quite worked that one out!

Teppic ,
@Teppic@kbin.social avatar

And notably after moving instance they would still have the same access to all the same posts, comments and content.

On the export comment I agree too. Mastodon even lets you port your whole profile.

Teppic ,
@Teppic@kbin.social avatar

You miss-represent the fediverse. Users aren't locked in. If someone buys one instance and you don't like it, you move. You still have all the same access, all the same content. An instance is only an access point, in many ways it is like an ISP, and people jump service providers all the time.

Teppic ,
@Teppic@kbin.social avatar

On Mastodon your followers stay with you if you move instances. I expect in time this will also be true here.

Teppic OP ,
@Teppic@kbin.social avatar

This is perhaps not strictly RedditMigration, but it certainly discusses migration to Mastodon which is all good too!

Teppic OP ,
@Teppic@kbin.social avatar

I think splitting the user base between them is probably good. Ideally TV/radio will stop defaulting to "tweet us with the hashtag..." They'll have use multiple channels and that might open the door for Mastodon and the fediverse too.

I'll keep saying it, but I'd like to see another big player (Microsoft, Google etc) embrace activitypub. That would bring balance and snub EEE for Meta.

Teppic OP ,
@Teppic@kbin.social avatar

Are you in Europe? Threads is blocked in the EU...

Teppic ,
@Teppic@kbin.social avatar

Oh the irony of the first "share this" button being Reddit at the bottom of the post.

Teppic ,
@Teppic@kbin.social avatar

I'm actually hoping Google or Microsoft or Apple etc create a compatible activity pub based service. That would create balance and make 'extend' problematic for meta.

I also think we need state actors and universities to start using Mastodon (not Twitter) - again that would make it difficult for Meta to deviate from standards.

Teppic ,
@Teppic@kbin.social avatar

I think actually it's both.

I think Hot and Top are sorted according to upvotes + boosts (weighted x2) less downvotes. I think the plan is reputation will work the same way (once it gets fixed).

...but reading this thread I wonder if that needs a rethink - people seem to boost rather more liberally than expected/intend in order to game this algorithm.

It was thought/expected that, since boosts effectively retweet the comment, they would be used quite sparingly - this is why they have a relatively high significance.

We could probably do with some clarity on all of this because this line of discussion has been repeated many times and there is quite a lot of hearsay and misinformation being parroted. @Ernest ?
