SJ0 , in The Reddit Protest Is Finally Over. Reddit Won.

I’m no big city doctor, but it seems like the people who were strong enough to decide to pack up and leave won.

chrizbie ,
@chrizbie@lemmy.nz avatar

Exactly, I’d say we won! Until reddit sat on it’s own nuts I hadn’t even heard of Lemmy and now I’m a happy daily user!

demonquark , in The Reddit Protest Is Finally Over. Reddit Won.

Tbh, reddit did win. They’re set to become a highly commercialized social media platform, focused on maximizing engagement through generic content.

They may lose dedicated eccentrics looking for a welcoming place to geek out over shit in their niche community. They’ll also lose users who value long in-depth discussions with complete internet strangers.

But, Reddit doesn’t want our need those people. As long as they have the generic subs (like r/funny, r/pics) and the outrage groups (like r/aita, r/publicfreakout), they’ll keep getting views and sweet sweet ad money. And that’s all Reddit cares about.

bezier-curve , (edited )

Everything you described in the second paragraph is exactly why appending site:reddit.com is a thing, it's a source of genuine discussion of products and expertise. That is what gives Reddit its SEO power in search engines and if those communities go, Reddit doesn't have much to fall back on. Meme level fluff can be replicated anywhere.

max , in The Reddit Protest Is Finally Over. Reddit Won.

Funny thing is that those of who left aren’t there anymore to comment that we did leave… So anyone who is still there is probably looking at the others who stayed and saying “See?! The protest didn’t work because we are still here!”

ok why do we care about some other site's drama :3

silicon_reverie ,
@silicon_reverie@kbin.social avatar

Because you're literally browsing a magazine about that other site?

I agree that this particular mod getting banned isn't directly related to the migration efforts, but the overarching drama it's connected to is the main reason people are leaving Reddit for Lemmy. IE: admins becoming hostile towards moderators, developers, and redditors, resulting in an environment that the whole userbase is trying to flee. So even though I don't care about this "power-tripping asshole mod" (as another Lemming described him), I get how some people here might find the post useful and relevant.

BlueForestDev OP ,
@BlueForestDev@kbin.social avatar

Apparently awkward was responsible for a lot of the John Oliver spam in the subs he modded. Might be why he's finally gone now. He even contacted John Oliver on Twitter to cry about his suspension and ask for help lol See pic related

onepinksheep ,
@onepinksheep@kbin.social avatar

Of course they're claiming responsibility for the John Oliver thing. Considering their history, I doubt it. But even if they were involved, it's the community at large that was responsible for the John Oliverification of Reddit.

Even a small barrier to entry greatly improves the signal to noise ratio in discussions, so I view the (very) minor challenge of getting into the Fediverse to be a much appreciated feature.

It’s also why I am a big fan of Beehaw’s signup process, which ask you open-ended questions to answer.

The sun always shines brighter on the day you leave an abusive partner. Welcome to what the internet was like before centralization - a playground of imagination, unfettered thought, and unbridled creativity. Congratulations on becoming part of the renaissance that is the Fediverse and breaking free from the stench of the Spezticle.

AlmightySnoo , in Reddit removes my post about how Reddit doesn't accept my GDPR request

They also have an email address so that you can make a GDPR request via email since the EU legislation gives you the right to do that, you shouldn’t be forced to use their platform to do that as otherwise it would be too easy for a company to lock you out of the process.

Here’s what Reddit’s privacy policy says:

If you have questions or are not able to submit a request to exercise your rights using the mechanisms above, you may also email us at to [email protected] from the email address that you have verified with your Reddit account, or submit them here.

as far as I am aware there is no work around to avoid community guidelines or whatever by using "/s" on lemmy. some of the instances have strong moderation so don't expect you can just do whatever you want and be welcomed everywhere.

ScrollinMyDayAway OP ,

Well of course. No disagreement that rules and mods have to exist. But after a couple of months of seeing Reddit’s /r’s that I liked becoming shit/shutting down and my enjoyment of the site going down equally, the ban for a post not too far from my regular sarcastic commentary made me think “Know what, I’m done here.”

You know the phrase “business genius”?

Spez is a business idiot.

He’s had money thrown at him from VCs, thousands of people generating content, and administering content for free, sitting on a goldmine of data and goodwill and Community spirit, and he’s managed to lose money, burn bridges, and fuck up the whole deal all for thppe sake of chasing a few dollars of API revenue and a bruised ego. All while others make millions and gain significant community support using the exact same data with business models he could have just copied or shared in.

He’s had every opportunity. He’s fucked it up at every step.

Business idiot.

Fire spez.

hightrix ,

he's managed to lose money, burn bridges, and fuck up the whole deal all for thppe sake of chasing a few dollars of API revenue

Let's call this what it actually was though, there was no attempt at making money from the API. This was entirely to shut down 3rd party apps. Smart AI companies will just scrape reddit. The only people affected by this are 3rd party app developers and users.

This is even more amazingly incompetent. There are a near infinite other ways they could have handled 3rd party apps not showing ads, but they instead chose the brute force method that makes no one happy.

Reddit is incompetence. That is their lifeblood.

zero_iq ,

Fair point. And yes, there’s just so many ways he could have made money from third party apps and their users without trashing them. The AI explanation just didn’t make any sense to me at all.

A business brain would have followed the money. He’s just following half-witted ideas/ego. I don’t think he really realises or understands what he had.

I had déjà vu during spez's AMA stating that old Reddit will always exist. He stated the same thing a few years back with third party apps. I don't trust anything that slimy fuck says.
