Gargleblaster , in The Reddit Protest Is Finally Over. Reddit Won.
@Gargleblaster@kbin.social avatar

The media has declared reddit the winner multiple times since the protest started.

Fuck the media. There are still 1800+ restricted subreddits.

https://reddark.untone.uk

Who won? Anybody who realized that reddit was commodifying your posts, comments, and contributions and left that shitshack.

CoffeeAddict , in Finally got access to Tildes today... Seems unimpressive

I feel like on average their conversation quality is higher than the other alternatives. However, as you said, it is not very diverse.

Tildes also feels very “primp & proper” so to speak. While the conversations are generally very civil and of good quality, I also feel like the place is ruled with an iron fist; step a little bit out of line, and you’re pretty much gone. This is then coupled with the fact that you’re not able to make custom communities.

In the end, its good for civil discussion within the bounds of what is already considered acceptable by the admin. I almost feel like it has the opposite problem Reddit does - whereas conversations on Reddit are largely driven by bots and the hivemind, Tildes is controlled by Deimos and whoever Deimos approves of.

Thorned_Rose ,

I thought you were being facetious calling the admin, Δεῖμος. Like implying the Tilde admin rules with such an iron first he instills god-like levels of dread in users. And then I discover the admin's username is indeed Deimos 😅

HipPriest OP ,

Tildes is controlled by Deimos and whoever Deimos approves of.

This is a theme emerging from a few of the comments which is odd to say the least. Makes it sound like a bit of a vanity project

HipPriest , in Squabbles is now Squabblr

Squabbles seemed ok but they seem to have quite a lot of drama going on whenever I log in...

Chozo , in Squabbles is now Squabblr

Honestly, this feels like an even worse name, in my opinion. I really disliked the trend of removing the "e" from "er" at the end of website names during the Web 2.0 days, and it feels just as goofy today.

I can't complain too much, though. I'm mostly just using it for cat pictures and silly memes, and the Tiff app works just the same as it did before.

Amir , in Finally got access to Tildes today... Seems unimpressive
@Amir@lemmy.ml avatar

When I learned it was impossible to create or join a smaller community I noped out of there. I’m not interested in “gaming”, I’m interested in a few smaller games only.

NightOwl , in Finally got access to Tildes today... Seems unimpressive

I haven’t browsed tildes so don’t have impression to give, but Reddit is Fun dev made a tildes app which I think is pretty cool. Decided to download it now. It’s called Three Cheers for Tildes.

Tildes could be intersting, but difficulty of sign ups I think is what would keep it from becoming bigger. But, maybe that’s what they want. Their way of controlling their own “instance”.

i spent some time there a few years back. it seemed.. sanitized.. and lacked any personality. im a silly person, i like silly things. silly isnt allowed there, generally. it felt like you had to have a stick shoved waaaay up your asshole to participate.

McBinary , in thank you, spez
@McBinary@kbin.social avatar

Agreed! Now get out there and contribute to kbin specific magazines and be part of it!

timdesuyo ,
Calcharger , in Fuck Reddit u̶p̶v̶o̶t̶e̶ boost party!
@Calcharger@kbin.social avatar

We boost here

BingGoose ,

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but what's the difference between boosting and hitting the upvote/downvote looking buttons?

Nugget_in_biscuit ,

Boost is a kbin upvote, while upvote is a Lemmy upvote. So if you want promote some good content on kbin, you have to use boost

Brkdncr ,

This is awful. It’s confusing.

harmonea ,
@harmonea@kbin.social avatar

This is from the various services trying to talk to each other in ways they weren't originally designed to do, really. Our "upvote" is a mastodon "favorite" (like) while our "boost" is functionally a retweet/reblog. Kbin tries to bridge the gap between threaded content and microblogging, and it gets about 90% of the way there; all it really needs to do is change it so that upvotes are the ones that contribute to reputation instead of boosts, which are functionally useless outside a fully microblog-style environment.

CurlyMoustache ,
@CurlyMoustache@kbin.social avatar

I just gave you a Boost and a Favourite!

HappySerf ,

And an upvote?!

It is currently broken which is why it functions in such a terrible way. A fix has been made, but not yet pushed to live. Hold tight :)

DoucheAsaurus ,
@DoucheAsaurus@kbin.social avatar

Lol, the developer has acknowledged it doesn't make sense at the moment and it will be changed.

AnonymousLlama ,
@AnonymousLlama@kbin.social avatar

From what I can see the upvote / downvote both work as you'd expect now (as in upvoting curates content). There was apparently a period of time where 'boost' was the upvote mechanic but that's been changed

Hyperreality ,

Kbin is basically still in alpha. They're fixing stuff like this. It'll be fixed soon.

Mostly_Harmless ,
@Mostly_Harmless@kbin.social avatar

@Brkdncr

There's definitely room for improvement, but I like what I see so far and don't have a problem learning a new paradigm. I'm sure that as the platform matures things will become more consistent.

TheDeadGuy ,
@TheDeadGuy@kbin.social avatar

Boost is like retweeting something, you can have followers in the fediverse. Boosting makes something more visible to everyone, so you upvote/downvote things you personally like/dislike and boost things you think your followers/everyone would like

Think of this place as a cross between email, Twitter and reddit. All communities can interact with each other and are independent

AnonTwo ,

The upvote doesn't represent an upvote on Kbin, so if you get a normal flow of upvotes/downvotes and no boosts, you'll have a negative reputation.

reputation doesn't actually do anything, of course, but it is there.

atocci ,
@atocci@kbin.social avatar

It only doesn't count as an upvote as far as reputation is concerned, upvotes are still upvotes in determining post ranking.

MadCybertist ,
@MadCybertist@kbin.social avatar

Not on kbin they aren’t. The only thing that drives the ranking currently is boost. I think they are working on fixing that though.

Prouvaire ,

@AnonTwo @ernest is aware of the issue: https://codeberg.org/Kbin/kbin-core/issues/80

Hopefully this will be changed soon, as the current system is confusing can be off-putting.

RickRussell_CA , in 11 year old account deleted today. Final straw.
@RickRussell_CA@kbin.social avatar

I was banned from r/food for pointing out that a "homemade breakfast" posted by a user consisted of a frozen hash brown patty, fresh uncut fruit, a sausage link, and a toaster waffle, and I suggested that it seemed like low effort to call that meal "homemade".

Turns out I was wrong about the waffle, at least the user followed up with a picture of a waffle iron and claimed they made it themselves. Fair dinkum, I wasn't going to press the point.

A couple of days later I had a multi-paragraph screed from a mod where they went through my post history and complained about things I posted to other subreddits, like r/hotdog, and a permanent irrevocable ban.

atlasraven31 ,

I suppose there is room for interpretation in “homemade.” I feel like if someone did the cooking themselves, then it qualifies. Store bought or only a microwave reheat would not qualify.

akintudne ,
@akintudne@reddthat.com avatar

“Homemade” usually implies “made from scratch” rather than “warmed up inside the house.” I’d consider a waffle made in a waffle iron as homemade, but not sure how said waffle ends up looking like an Eggo toaster one.

Cat , in I love kbin but the login bug persists and I can't take it anymore
@Cat@kbin.social avatar

I wonder what changed. The login bug has been gone for me for a while now.

Creating a viable competitor is never a victory from a business perspective.

xc2215x , in The Reddit Protest Is Finally Over. Reddit Won.

It was a good idea at first. Not enough subreddits participated or not a long enough time to make a difference.
