That site is really difficult to use.

I went on Squabblr.co to check the news out and one of the first posts I saw was from user "14ss8bb8" talking about how transphobia isn't hate speech.

Yeah that place just became Voat 2.0. What a fucking idiotic decision.

AtomicPurple , in You know what I DON’T miss from Reddit? Having a 75% chance of having your submissions immediately removed anytime you post something.
@AtomicPurple@kbin.social avatar

I think I had things removed once or twice in the eight years I was on Reddit. I'm not sure why this sentiment keeps cropping up because I've never had this experience. Do people just not read the sidebar before posting things in random subreddits? That's the only way I could see this happening with such frequency.

density ,
@density@kbin.social avatar

I would read sidebars most of the time but sometimes I didn't understand the way the mods intended the rules to be understood. For example I posted a link to an on-topic podcast or blog post. But it gets taken down for being "self promotion" even though there is no reason to believe (or even allegation) that I had anything to do with the production. But since the mods have no way of telling apart sock puppets from legitimate third parties, they have banned all blogs and podcasts to be fair. Silly me I thought "self promotion" meant you were "promoting" your "self". But actually they just don't accept blogs, podcasts, youtubes etc.

Other times there are banned domains. Like one time I made a self post in a tech forum that mentioned an item on aliexpress. But aliexpress is banned because there was so much spam. Another time I linked to an image from pinterest in a hobby sub. Both taken down by automod.

Eventually you learn stuff like this although it requires a mod to take the time to tell you. It's annoying how the posts are silently hidden without notification or explanation. I got in the habit of checking posts with no/low comments in incognito. That's how you learn it was taken down but you then have to message the mods to learn why.

timtoon , in You know what I DON’T miss from Reddit? Having a 75% chance of having your submissions immediately removed anytime you post something.

My comments in niche subreddits only ever got upvotes in single digits, so adjusting to kbin wasn't too difficult

The subreddit should have a list of rules for you to read and follow to prevent this sort of annoying retry situation. Perhaps read them if you want to participate in the community.

catahoula_leopard , in Finally got access to Tildes today... Seems unimpressive

I really love Tildes, but the comments in this thread are fair enough criticisms, and pretty accurate.

The only thing I'd clarify in the comments here is that there's not really a "waiting list" for invites. Deimos accepts emails requesting invites, and people receive access as he responds to each email. Users also get 5 invites every few weeks, so you can ask people for one here or on /r/redditalternatives. Or in the invite threads that are posted in /r/tildes. And the invite system isn't used to make it feel "exclusive" (especially since it's pretty easy to get one,) it's used because the site has been around for years with an existing userbase, so there's an effort to gradually add users to Tildes so the site doesn't just turn into 99% disgruntled redditors.

Tildes simply doesn't have the goals of "reddit alternatives" that are hoping to launch a new, popular site. It's just doing its own thing. Personally I find it refreshing, but it's definitely not for people who want to be part of the next "reddit" with millions of other people.

Actually, since you all aren't being assholes about your criticisms of it, this gives me a good feeling about kbin. I was going to try this site as an alternative before I found Tildes and have been spending most of my time there, but I'll probably hang around here eventually, for content that doesn't belong on Tildes (image posts, memes, and other silly stuff.)

Sure, I definitely respect that and it is one of the things I like about it. I like the way it's focused on conversations over cut n paste memes.

But I think I've found a similar experience here on Kbin by blocking meme heavy groups and joining more specific communities. I'm still going to check out Tildes every now and then though

SomeAmateur , in You know what I DON’T miss from Reddit? Having a 75% chance of having your submissions immediately removed anytime you post something.

showerthoughts had a super strict automod that would shoot down damn near anything mildly original. And people wondered why half of the sub was top/all reposts

HipPriest , in You know what I DON’T miss from Reddit? Having a 75% chance of having your submissions immediately removed anytime you post something.

I don't know what you were posting but I don't think my odds of having things removed were ever that high, lol

But it is nice to not have that feeling yeah

AmidFuror ,

Didn't have enough comment karma.

HipPriest ,

Ah, one of Reddit's more annoying rules.

Neato ,
@Neato@kbin.social avatar

It's mostly people who keep getting banned or keep making new accounts for some reason that fall into this. Or bots posting to generate tons of link karma but never posted comments and never got comment karma. It's to prevent those who get banned or bots from being able to flood a sub.

Depends a lot on where you were posting.

/r/nfl was notorious for deleting posts from unknown users when new broke to repost it from a mod's account. Had nothing to do with ban evasion or bots, just leveraging the control they had to make sure they had all the biggest posts.

HipPriest OP ,

If you go on their Reddit sub (I know) and ask for one you can get one pretty quickly

raze2012 ,
  1. it's not a waitlist, simply invite only. If you can find someone who browses tildes they can give you an invite with no issue. But a semi-common way to "go around" that is messaging the admin, who ofc has infinite invitess, has a business address, and probably has dozens of requests coming in to read.
  2. it's quite the opposite here. The lack of free account creation is to purposefully limit growrth. Tildes doesn't want to be a dumping ground for reddit refugees everytime a drama explodes.
Chozo , in Squabbles is now Squabblr

Honestly, this feels like an even worse name, in my opinion. I really disliked the trend of removing the "e" from "er" at the end of website names during the Web 2.0 days, and it feels just as goofy today.

I can't complain too much, though. I'm mostly just using it for cat pictures and silly memes, and the Tiff app works just the same as it did before.

CoffeeAddict , in Finally got access to Tildes today... Seems unimpressive

I feel like on average their conversation quality is higher than the other alternatives. However, as you said, it is not very diverse.

Tildes also feels very “primp & proper” so to speak. While the conversations are generally very civil and of good quality, I also feel like the place is ruled with an iron fist; step a little bit out of line, and you’re pretty much gone. This is then coupled with the fact that you’re not able to make custom communities.

In the end, its good for civil discussion within the bounds of what is already considered acceptable by the admin. I almost feel like it has the opposite problem Reddit does - whereas conversations on Reddit are largely driven by bots and the hivemind, Tildes is controlled by Deimos and whoever Deimos approves of.

Thorned_Rose ,

I thought you were being facetious calling the admin, Δεῖμος. Like implying the Tilde admin rules with such an iron first he instills god-like levels of dread in users. And then I discover the admin's username is indeed Deimos 😅

HipPriest OP ,

Tildes is controlled by Deimos and whoever Deimos approves of.

This is a theme emerging from a few of the comments which is odd to say the least. Makes it sound like a bit of a vanity project
