Skyler , in I don't understand why people still want to use reddit instead of moving to Lemmy or Kbin
@Skyler@kbin.social avatar

We're early adopters. Early adopters have a higher tolerance for (and ability to deal with) things like bugs, confusing UI, uncertainty, and probably continual change for the short term.

But hey, someone's gotta do it. The end result of this will be an established community and a more polished product. Over time, more and more people will show up as this place gets better and better, and Reddit continues to worsen. (Everyone knows that old.reddit is going away, it's just a matter of when.)

HidingCat ,

We're early adopters. Early adopters have a higher tolerance for (and ability to deal with) things like bugs, confusing UI, uncertainty, and probably continual change for the short term.

Not to mention, a lack of content. While it's populating nicely it's still not like Reddit, especially for niche subjects. You definitely have to endure a lot of shouting in the wind situations while this builds up.

Skyler ,
@Skyler@kbin.social avatar

Yeah, I've certainly found myself subscribing to any and every magazine that looks even remotely like it could be interesting. Getting inundated isn't a problem around these parts just yet. But the volume definitely has gone up recently.

Bumblebb ,

I still am struggling with how to sub to a magazine. Poor guy running this needs a bit of help with ui so stupid people like myself can enjoy it

CoderKat ,
@CoderKat@kbin.social avatar

It's genuinely hard and needs to be improved. Subscribing to a magazine that someone else on kbin has subscribed to already isn't too bad. Go to the magazine (eg, click what looks like the subreddit name in the post) and scroll alllll the way down and there'll be a subscribe button.

But if nobody has subscribed yet in the instance, it's hilariously hard. You have to search in the general search (not the magazine search) for specifically "[email protected]" and you should see a subscribe button then. You will not content in that magazine that existed before you subscribed. If that sounds terrible, it's because it is. Thankfully, most of the time, you won't be the first to subscribe to a magazine and thus can just use the magazine search or browse the front page to see posts.

PS: the subscribe option is also as the bottom of each thread. So you can alternatively just open a thread in the magazine instead of the magazine itself.

PPS: I've mentioned the subscribe button being at the bottom because that's the placement on mobile and I think many of us are on mobile. On desktop, it's in the sidebar.

e_t_ Admin ,

If that sounds terrible, it's because it is.

I set up my own kbin instance where I'm the only user. I guess I invited the terribleness upon myself. I'm always the first to subscribe to federated magazines on my instance. It also seems weird to me that I'm made the moderator of everything I subscribe to, at least on my instance.

FreeBooteR69 , in The only solution in an abusive relationship is to leave.
@FreeBooteR69@kbin.social avatar

This is the best advice and it's what i did. People love their drama though. Best way to hurt Reddit is to ignore them and not click on their site.

Tbh everyone just needs to leave reddit

Let the bots take over

It’s always been Stormfront 2.0 anyway

Fuck reddit

minnieo OP ,
@minnieo@kbin.social avatar

Yes, at this point, there is really no fucking saving it or hoping for changes, they will go as far as they need to go to get their profits back up. It must be abandoned. The only time I ever spend on reddit is to convince people to migrate to kbin or lemmy (nicely, dont be annoying)

OtakuAltair ,
@OtakuAltair@lemmy.world avatar

I find that a large majority of redditors are still somehow completely clueless about what’s happening.

So I made this little formatted summary of events inviting confused redditors to lemmy/kbin if anyone wants to copy/paste; seems to get people to understand.

ILeftReddit ,

@OtakuAltair At this point I don't care about redittors or reddit. It can go on to be wildly successful, doesn't matter to me, I've moved on.

What really worked for me was the https://sub.rehab website. When I found that, it made me realize I need to stick with the people who actually built the subs I love -- the mods. Here I am.

someguy3 ,

Ironically this API issue will kill bots, which was needed.

Yewb ,

It will only slow them temporarily you don't need api for bots

Kichae ,

Yeah, it'll only kill the useful ones in the long run.

CoderKat ,
@CoderKat@kbin.social avatar

Yeah. The unethical bots will just use scrapers, as they already do for the many websites that don't offer APIs. They're already violating ToS, so they don't care. Ethical ones won't have that option (at least not past the fairly low quota).

troybot ,
@troybot@kbin.social avatar

Correct. Now the bots will be constantly scraping the pages of every post which will be a much bigger burden on their servers.

liminis ,

The only good that can truly come of this at this stage is sabotaging Huffman's hopes of cashing out for a second time, after he sold his stake for a ""mere"" 10 million back in the day.

LinkOpensChest_wav ,
@LinkOpensChest_wav@lemmy.one avatar

Imagine having more money than anyone can spend in a lifetime and users who create the content for you. All you have to do is sit on your ass and do and say nothing, but then imagine what a pants-on-head stupid fool you’d have to be to do anything to mess that up, to let your ego totally disrupt the sweet deal you’ve got going. That’s Steve Huffman – the king of all losers.

okbin ,
@okbin@kbin.social avatar

they won't

i tried to move my 100k subscriber sub to kbin (i also offered two different chatrooms)

6 came to kbin and people started attacking me for having the sub closed (one person even resorted to transphobia like jesus fucking christ) and being "political" and one person even made their own version of my subreddit

moving is too much work (it's actually not that much work, but since we now need two videos playing at the same time and can only watch those vids for 30 seconds, everything is "too much work"). that's why people are still on facebook, twitter, instagram, and tiktok.

i'm very glad there's an acceptable amount of activity on the "threadiverse" right now... but i just don't have hope that everyone will leave.

I used to respect the guy for standing for Right to repair and all that, but those comments from him are just unacceptable. The video is despicable and I won’t watch his content anymore. Sad.

Wereduck ,

I’m a bit confused if I watched the same thing as OP and you. I don’t think those comments are from him, but rather random people responding to his video? The video seemed like an argument that pure self-interest is self defeating, and on the importance of solidarity, in response to someone saying that supporting blind access is virtue signaling. But with a clickbaity and a bit misleading title (note apostrophe position in Redditor’s vs Redditors’)

CynAq , in At Reddit I can save a thread, at Mastodon I can bookmark a post or comment. How do I save a Kbin (or other) 'article', comment, etc?
@CynAq@kbin.social avatar

Kbin doesn't currently support saving.
I bookmark things for now on my local browser. Afaik, the feature is in the to do list so I'll save what I can from from the bookmarks manually once that's done.

polygon ,
@polygon@kbin.social avatar

If you upvote a post it will put it in your Favorites. You can access favorites by hovering over the hamburger menu just to the left of your username in the top right corner. To upvote without putting it in your favorites, you can use boost instead. This is essentially how you save posts on kbin.

CynAq ,
@CynAq@kbin.social avatar

Yes but on reddit, upvotes puts something in your upvoted list and you can save selectively, which is a much better system for organization.

Boosts and upvotes have a slightly different functionality here that I do upvote and/or boost posts and comments differently, none of which is to add the post to my favorites. Even though it can be used that way for the same effect, it's a different use case.

What if I want to save a post I didn't want to boost or favorite? Should I not be able to save a comment I disagree with that I also downvoted?

demvoter , in Removed as moderator of /r/Celebrities after 14 years
@demvoter@kbin.social avatar

This should be a lesson to all remaining mods to stop putting their effort into that site. Reddit doesn’t care about who helped build it. They only care about making money for themselves.

What a shitty way to remove you. Completely uncalled for.

Ulu-Mulu-no-die ,
@Ulu-Mulu-no-die@kbin.social avatar

Mods should quit moderating altogether IMO, more than 20 thousands participated in the protest, there's no way they could replace them all in a reasonable time-frame, it would be a much better chaos than the blackout.

retiolus , in 23k New Lemmy and Kbin Accounts Created in Last Hour
@retiolus@lemmy.cat avatar

Looks like this comes from www.hexbear.net, as I understand they started federating today (www.hexbear.net/post/272295) with 23K users and 271K posts.

This would explain the spike in the number of users and the number of publications. So no, they’re not bots.

Odo ,

Hexbear migrated to upstream Lemmy yesterday (they were running a home developed fork from an earlier version of Lemmy). I submitted the instance to fedidb earlier today (after a bunch of failed attempts because fedidb kept erroring out/timing out for some reason). Afaik, federation is not active (yet) on their instance.

Rockin132 , in r/ModCoord has officially recommended migration off of Reddit.

It's not worth staying on at this point anyway. The people that remain are largely assholes. You can basically see the reason that protests don't work as a macrocosm, because most users now are just bitching that "wahh the blackout only hurts users". No different to people complaining about climate activists who block highways, or trans right activists who get blamed for "being too loud and annoying". Protests don't work when solidarity simply doesn't exist because most people are just selfish, short sighted idiots, and that's basically the userbase that remains over on Reddit at this point. I can't think of a good reason to stay and interact with those kinds of people.

There are also lots of apologetic mod posts that are like "we reopened because we don't want to lose all our hard work and be replaced by someone worse, that is not what's best for our community so we're reopening", the ignorance and arrogance of such statements is mind blowing lmao, but trust Reddit mods to not see the wood for the trees.

junetest OP , in How do I subscribe to [email protected]?

To clarify, I want to subscribe on kbin.social to a magazine on latte.isnot.coffee. Or can we only subscribe to instances on some 'federated' list, and, if so, isn't that a maintenance nightmare?

asjmcguire ,
@asjmcguire@kbin.social avatar

No, it's just that kbin has only recently started federating, and I believe ernest said it's still not FULLY federating yet. It's very new. kbin currently also has an issue where it is case sensitive but pretty much nowhere else is - which is causing some odd quirks. The proper format is @magazine so @china

MeowKittyWow , in How do I subscribe to [email protected]?
@MeowKittyWow@kbin.social avatar

I had this same problem. Try looking it up over here: https://kbin.social/search possibly without the ! mark, not sure.

I think the magazines list only shows magazines/communities that have already federated. But, search kicks that into motion if it hasn't started already.

Freesoftwareenjoyer ,

Unlike Apollo, will this be Free Software though?

entropicshart ,
@entropicshart@lemmy.world avatar

Apollo did have a free tier and then a few paid tiers.

iirc, (I bought it many years ago), they had a one time Pro purchase that removed any ads and unlocked theming and such, and then the Ultimate which was a subscription to cover server costs of push notifications (although it did eventually end up having more features locked behind it).

While I personally did not go for the Ultimate subscription (didn’t really need the push notifications), I gladly paid for the Pro as it was well worth it IMO.

WaterSword ,
@WaterSword@lemmy.world avatar

I think they meant Free as in Open Source

Freesoftwareenjoyer ,

It’s not exactly the same. The Free Software movement is about user freedom. Open Source is a term used by corporations to avoid mentioning that users should have rights.
