Court Finds that Texas Law Requiring the Rejection of Mail Ballots and Applications Violates the Civil Rights Act ( www.justice.gov )

The U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas ruled yesterday that portions of Texas Senate Bill 1, adopted in September 2021, violate the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The court found that parts of S.B. 1 require officials to reject mail-in ballot applications and mail-in ballots based on errors or omissions that are...

I’m sure the taxpayers of TX are happy that their money is going to legal defense in lawsuits that end up overturning unconstitutional laws that passed by some of the same people that get paid to defend (and lose) in the courts.

When attorneys for the state write laws that are found unconstitutional they should have their pay revoked.

I use a credit card for everything, especially large purchases that don't charge an additional transaction fee to use the card. I also pay it off each month. I get 3-5% back when I use it. It would be quite stupid/lazy not to take free money, while also keeping my credit score at 847 (last I checked).

A lot of the stuff Ramsey says is good for Ramsey; not anyone else, and certainly not the public. I 100% agree with him that (most) debt is bad, but having no credit is worse than bad credit. If you want a strain on the system (what we have now), you deny credit to people that aren't credit worthy (*people without credit) so that they cannot afford to purchase homes. A mortgage is debt, but it's not "bad-debt."

Frog-Brawler ,
@Frog-Brawler@kbin.social avatar

Consider downloading some kind of checkbook ledger app. Anytime you get paid, re-balance it and make sure it's correct. Then, use it for EVERY purchase that isn't cash. Once you get into the habit of not needing to re-balance it, switch 100% of your purchases to credit card, and keep the habit up. When it comes time to pay your credit card bill, you will have the cash you need to pay it off, and you will also be building credit which will give you more purchasing power down the road.

You clearly listen to too much Ramsey. No credit is a credit score of 0. Bad credit is 580. It is going to take time to repair either one but if you’re running a race, do you want to start at 0, or 2/3 of the way to the finish line?

Even if rates are 10%, ownership is better than paying a landlord rent. Equity, equity, equity… High interest rates are when you upgrade or purchase more property to build wealth. Just ride it out and refinance when the rates come down.

Having a high credit score makes everything easier. A high credit score is also something required for certain jobs. Ramsey comes up with “workarounds” for when his advice about not having credit doesn’t work out.

Frog-Brawler ,
@Frog-Brawler@kbin.social avatar

Yea I mean, I don’t want to entirely shit on everything Ramsey says, it’s just incredibly rudimentary. Great for people starting out… but if his listeners continue to listen to him forever they are doing themselves a disservice.

Frog-Brawler ,
@Frog-Brawler@kbin.social avatar

When I checked my credit score last month, it was 847. I’m sure I’m doing better than 99% of people in that regard.

When interest rates are high, there’s less demand and as a result prices are lower.

Keep listening to Ramsey. This conversation has devolved into something I’m no longer interested in, so I’m checking out… have a good one.

Frog-Brawler ,
@Frog-Brawler@kbin.social avatar

Frog-Brawler ,
@Frog-Brawler@kbin.social avatar

The entire history of tipping has roots in slavery. It’s also not as common most other places in the world. People in some countries would take great offense to being offered a tip, as it would suggest they’re needing extra help.

Tipping is not guaranteed income; yet “income,” is the entire purpose of having a job. If you go to work to earn $X as to be able to pay your bills and just have any standard of living at all, you need to have a certain minimum in order to continue meeting that standard.

We’ve passed too many business owner friendly laws in this country. The fact that “tipped employees” have a lower minimum wage is why business owners have been implementing payment systems that offer an option to tip. It’s the business owner NOT paying fair wages. They try to pass the responsibility off to customers.

Business owners that are doing this are taking advantage of everyone in the cycle. The only way to break the cycle is to break the system. Don’t tip unless you’re getting service where someone actually brings you something. Walking something up to the counter you’re standing at should not justify tipped wages.

As much as I abhor everything about DeSantis and FL politics in general, I have a hard time believing this is a surprise to people that are active voters, or otherwise are paying even the smallest bit of attention to their surroundings. I was informed this would happen when I went to vote in 2022. I’ve received two different notices in the mail to re-apply for vote by mail (which I actually prefer not to do). I’ve gotten text messages about it from interest groups within the state. It’s been mentioned on the news. It was mentioned by other neighbors on nextdoor. I got an email from the Seminole County Democratic Party about it. Short of coming and ringing my doorbell, or sending a raven with a message to my house… they’ve done everything they can to let people know they need to re-register for vote by mail if they prefer to do voting by mail.

They need to ask Joel Greenberg and Jason Brodeur what they know about it too. Pretty sure they both had a part in laundering the money he used for that through Seminole county elections.

I like to tell everyone outside of FL about my insurance cost increases. When I purchased my home in 2017, $990 was the price tag for very good insurance on my home. Today, my insurance is $4200, and it also had a “roof exclusion,” until I recently replaced the roof to the tune of $10k.

I really want to get out of here but I am not sure where I would want to go. I always just assumed that one day my career would force me to move. Well, most of the good positions within my career field are fully remote now, so I don’t expect that I’ll ever be forced to move somewhere either.

Ha! He's probably going to write off the Visa giftcards as an operational expense on his taxes too. However... maybe it's also worth $1 to me to get anyone else from the GOP involved that isn't Trump or DeSantis. This is my first time hearing of this guy, that's kinda unique for the GOP. Usually their mantra is something more similar to "loud and crazy to the front!" Do they have anyone left?

At this point, the DOJ can investigate, find evidence for 1,000 separate instances of Thomas taking bribes from Russia, and he’ll still be sitting on the bench unless the GQP decides that the laws of the land are more important than their team. Don’t hold your breath.

I meant to reply yesterday but I got distracted. I have a pretty large bias against nazis / white supremacists and fascists. Unfortunately, on the fediverse, we're not going to be able to "out now!" them at the door, simply because we're not going to be able to tell if they're sitting behind their keyboard (or phone) wearing a vest with iron crosses, nor will we be able to tell if they have either red or white laces in their Doc Martens.

I think that posting content (or in support of content) that falls into the categories you mentioned should equate to getting the boot though.
