I've known for years that Gene Roddenberry wrote lyrics for Theme from Star Trek so that he could receive 50% of the royalties, but it never occurred to me that I should try and find out what those lyrics were. However, the lyrics did come up recently in a nerdy trivia show I watch, "Uhm, Actually", and now that I know them, I...
Pretty gutted at this news, but as others have pointed out, this move may cement LD as a classic without outstaying their welcome. And hopefully there is a desire for more animated Trek now
I haven’t watched Discovery past episode 6 or 7 of season 1 (after the klingon sex scene, I tapped out) . I take it they’re 1000 years in the future now, and that’s when this series takes place?
If so, oof, it will be hard to identify with a millenium of progress, unless they pull a Futurama and have everything rebuilt a few hundred years in (after the second coming of Jesus of course). Why not go back to the Harve Bennett-era academy series for inspiration? Or set it after Nemesis?
The only redeeming grace for me so far is having Tawny Newsome (or is it Trondy Newman?) in the writers room. She is an absolute delight
Arguably they were still figuring out the tone, and how to revive a 20 year old franchise while not retreading the past. Not claiming there aren’t some duds, but later 90s Trek benefited from TNG cracking the “formula” and sticking to it.
Compare a modern spiritual successor to TNG like The Orville, which, despite a rocky premiere, just crushed it within 5-6 episodes, and kept crushing it, because they didn’t have to put so much legwork into defining the tone of the show.
The Orville… Still the best Trek of the modern era.
Came across this article, and it’s a very interesting take on how Star Trek has changed with the times, and how modern audiences seem to have a harder time trusting institutions or imagining Trek’s utopia.
Look, it’s Kirk’s brother’s roommate’s boyfriend from that one background scene in that one episode! . Modern star wars has the same problem of making an entire universe seem so small. Makes me appreciate the bold choice that was Voyager: tossing them far away from anything familiar and any cameos (not that we didn’t get them but they had to be more creative within the premise, aka tuvok on sulu’s Excelsior )
Now this I’m interested in. Andor was a quite good and, importantly, character-driven study of a desperate man growing to challenge an insurmountable empire… You know, in contrast to the exhaustive world building and effects-heavy “pew pew” fan service that has become the rest of modern star wars
I dare say, I’d also enjoy this film much more than the nixed Tarantino film
When a very important Star Trek person wanders into Ben’s cargo bay, he leaves the handmade gun at home to avoid another encounter with security. But with a 50% hit rate on the backstage rider, “Bowmore 15 or similar” results in something “perfectly drinkable”. How did Waltke Senior inform Rok-Tahk’s mouth? Is Kevin Uxbridge being discussed inside of Big Rodd’s pocket? Does Nickelodeon slime have a shelf life? It’s the episode that’s made for specialized collectors of Star Trek V memorabilia!
This is in English but I have absolutely no idea what it says

Speaking of demos, anyone remember the trailer for the game Secret of Vulcan Fury that was included in front of Interplay games, touting the voices of the original cast? So sad it was never released, considering it was deforest Kelley’s last turn as McCoy. I wonder if the original audio tapes still exist and someone could turn it into a game…
But also found this “footage” when looking for the trailer
There was much hullabaloo over the game being written by DC Fontana, and of course the entire original cast having laid down recordings. That said, if I recall correctly, they never even had a working version before Interplay folded.
As I mention above, wonder where those VR tracks went and if they could be rescued and turned into a game, radio play, etc. But I wouldn’t be surprised if they’ve been lost to time or, if they still exist in someone’s garage , aren’t too degraded
I have mixed feelings about Disco ending. I really dug the first season’s look at a Federation at war, and following the person who arguably set that war in motion dealing with her culpability. Add to that a ship that is part weird science lab, part haunted house. And yeah, I could live with the Klingon redesign....
We’ve got a number from the 90s of classic Trek charactets: Kirk in the captain chair, Spock at his console. Also some of the older Star Wars ones that also light up with voices.
Avoided it for the longest time, thought it was a kids show (Had been burned by the clone wars cartoon). HOLY CRAP, was it pure unadultered trek. Find it and binge, my friend

I didn’t think studios made these kind of fluff pieces anymore, so it hits on the nostalgia factor of early 2000s Entertainment Tonight vibes. The section with tawny newsome and Eugene cordero got a laugh from me. Jackie Cox was delightful. Jerry O’Connell looks like he desperately wants to be anywhere else
What turns me off about SNW is that The Orville is a better return to form to “classic Trek” than actual Star Trek. The episodes revolving around Topa’s gender and identity is some of the best scifi commentary on modern society out there right now.
I think it’s good that CBS never gave MacFarlane his own ST show, lest he be beholden to all the history of the franchise (the same thing that is, in part, weighing down SNW). Who knew that khan was Kirk’s father’s brother’s nephew’s cousin’s former roommate?!
I am so so sorry, but is anyone else getting tremendous butthole vibes from the Merchant Marine Spacecraft Duty Insignia? How did that get past the producers?
Prodigy is an amazing show. I hope it finds a home soon. I just recommended it to my 80 year old father. My wife and I just about died with happiness rewatching season 1 recently. All around, the best Trek in years
I don’t know… . With a short 10 episode season, it seems weird to have two quirky episodes (this and LD crossover) nearly back to back. But then again, SNW def not my cup of tea (that would be : earl grey, hot)
Agree. I’m disappointed I waited so long to indulge in Prodigy, but holy hell, when I did, it did not disappoint. Be aware the characters and dialogue are more kid friendly, but the voice acting is top notch (shutout to Kate Mulgrew and Jason Mantzoukas) and the plots are classically Trek: first contact, ethical dilemmas, holodecks gone awry. Cannot recommend enough
