HR person here, you don’t lead with that. You lead with “Hey we heard what happened, we’re here to offer you FMLA, take your time in filling it out and we’ll just assume you’re taking the full 12 weeks”. If they didn’t offer it, they super fucked up.

Glad to see these companies are flailing. If you can’t afford to pay a minimum wage that keeps up with inflation then your company shouldn’t exist.
Transitioning to a system where companies are owned by the workers would help, but ultimately I think this is just a natural consequence of industiral society. We get modern medicine and air conditioning, and in exchange we give up our ability to self-actualize through our work.
