I learned that word from my dad when I was a child. we kept a carafe in the refrigerator designated for water. It's a wine carafe but can put anything in it. My dad was an alcoholic so he had a wine carafe and a lot of other alcohol-related accoutrements like beer steins.
English speakers can really enhance their vocabulary when they know French. English does have a lot of French words that most people don't use anymore but if you use them, your vocabulary becomes off-the-charts intellectual.
Yeah there used to be a time when, in order to qualify for renting or buying a dwelling, candidate had to prove to the housing industry that they earned three times the amount of rent or mortgage. Is that still a thing?
Lyft and Uber said they will cease operations in Minneapolis after the city’s council voted Thursday to override a mayoral veto and require that ride-hailing services increase driver wages to the equivalent of the local minimum wage of $15.57 an hour....
Thank you. I put 1. I guess that’s the best I can do, because I am not informed regarding any further “tax math.”
The state of California withholds 37% of my gross income. Because apparently that’s how they treat everyone in this state. It’s maddening and I cannot survive like this. The most I can manage to pull in net every month is $3,000. I’m pretty sure that’s considered poverty level even though I’m working full time in a career I went to college for and still paying off.
Some people tell me, “Well the good news is you’ll get a huge tax refund every April.” But no, I will not get a tax refund next year or the year after that because the IRS garnishes all of my tax refunds after something stupid my (now ex) husband did 10 years ago.
Which is why I really want to minimize withholdings.
Otherwise this is what I’m currently dealing with: Can you imagine what it feels like to go to work 40 hours a week and over 1/3rd of the month I’m basically working for no pay?!
It’s absolutely maddening.
I guess over 1/3rd of the month I’m just working for the privilege of living in California.
yep you are so right. I have rolled all that over in my head countless times, and I’ve lived so many places all over the world, and California really is my favorite. I’m staying. I’m glad we had this discussion so I can start to feel more comfortable with 1/3 of my life being slave labor to beautiful California.
still a tricky debacle because there’s no guarantee McDonald’s will hire a former Panera employee, if McDonald’s is not hiring because other positions are already full, including all customer orders taken from a robot kiosk.
I agree. And I got extreme with it. because when it comes to making sure all the money we earn goes to ourselves and to our own betterment, the biggest obstacle in the way is the egregious cost of housing. In order to get on top of that hurdle, we either have to become part of the real estate industry, or entirely opt out of it. Well I entirely opted out of it.
VanLife. Yup I’ve been doing van life for the last 3 years. Complete with Solar panels, plumbing, climate control, bedroom, kitchen, storage space. I am in my van right now in one of my membership gym’s parking lot. Every dime I earn goes to me and to whatever I choose, NOT to the extortionate housing industry.
If you know how much you’re projected to earn over the year, you could ask whomever handles your pay to adjust it to the correct percentage.
earnings are highly variable. the best I can do is I keep a spreadsheet, on which I calculate hourly and weekly and monthly averages. And I’ve only been there a month so not enough data to extrapolate from yet.
come tax time it’ll be settled and you’ll either get back however much you paid in excess
well thanks, they are deducting so much from me (26% ?!) that I certainly would be due a refund. Were it not for another tragic turn in my personal circumstances, in which the IRS has been garnishing all of my tax refunds since 2014 because of something stupid my ex-husband did in 2009 😡
I worked at H&R Block as a tax preparer for the 2001 tax season 😄 So I do kinda understand taxes even though that was a long time ago and I don’t really think or care much about all the things I used to know anymore.
The last place I worked at in Nevada, I kept careful track and noticed 13% government deduction every paycheck. I noted it and figured my finances accordingly. No big deal.
But this California 26% government deduction is blowing my mind. It’s outrageous. And someone else in the thread said to rest assured that the govt would never withhold more than 37%. But even 37% max is ridiculous. That’s nearly half of our hard work turned into govt slave labor! Now when I’m at work I am consciously bitterly aware that 1/4 days I’m involuntarily working for free 😡
They insisted that I provide an in-state address so I gave them the address of a nearby post office. But I told them over and over and over again that my out-of-state address is my residence. They didn’t like that and they refused to use it. They put the in-state post office address as my residence and they are taxing me based on that.
I guarantee I will not have to file in my home state because I deliberately chose that state for residency because it has no state or personal property taxes and no annual vehicle inspections.
I’m sure there are some people in the world who when they get raises, they set aside the difference and save it up for an investment of some sort instead of just carrying on their life as normal and spending the extra money as if it was always there. Gumball machine trinkets, woo-hoo.
Gentlemen, it is with great pleasure I inform you that I have just been hired onto a new job and it is a 3-day work week. Am much pleased. Believe me, my whole life I’ve been working 5 or 6 day work weeks working my ass off for very little pay, finally I have this reprieve. In these three days I am earning as much as I would normally earn in five or six days. Again I express my gratitude and I hope someday everyone in the world may feel this reprieve.
So I guess the YouTube video that came out debunking the name “L - A” preceded the birth of the real actual L-A who you met.
I’m not doubting you. I don’t know you. I’m just saying there’s a YouTube video that debunked any existence of a person with such a name at the time the video was made.

job applicants have found the listed figures shrink once they reach the interview stage
Yup! This happened to me today in fact. The job listing lured me in promising $71 an hour plus full dental medical and vision coverage plus a $2,000 sign on bonus.
Last week I’m invited to an interview where he says my pay would be $25 an hour plus commissions. hmmm ok fine. whatever.
Today at the second stage of the interview process she told me it would be minimum wage. And she mentioned nothing about medical or signing bonus.
yeah, all I can afford to do is go to work and go to the gym and sit around and pay money to maintain my vehicle which gets me to work and to the gym. Believe me there are a million other things I’d rather be doing.
