Mozilla reverses course, re-lists extensions it removed in Russia ( www.osnews.com )

In alignment with our commitment to an open and accessible internet, Mozilla will reinstate previously restricted listings in Russia. Our initial decision to temporarily restrict these listings was made while we considered the regulatory environment in Russia and the potential risk to our community and staff.

Re your off-topic aside, it looks more like that user has been tagged as verbose (whether that mean long comments or a high volume of posts isn't clear).

Deebster OP ,

You pronounce the t in hot and then pronounce the p of potato?

Deebster OP ,
@Deebster@programming.dev avatar

I'm sitting here trying to replicate what that sounds like from your description and I've only succeeding in sounding like a madman.

Regarding sleep quality, why did humans evolve to require full darkness?

I know evolution is governed by chance and it is random but does it make sense to "ruin" sleep if there's light? I mean normally, outside, you never have pure darkness, there are the moon and stars even at night. In certain zones of the Earth we also have long periods of no sunshine and long periods of only sunshine....

There's some evidence that the bacteria in the air are different at day vs. at night

This is really interesting, do you have more info on this to share?

Plenty to read, thanks.

I see that first paper is for tropical environments, is this also found in other parts of the world?

Dr. Pulaski Appreciation Post ( startrek.website )

I don't know whether it's a popular opinion or not, but I think Dr. Pulaski was a great character and I found her much more interesting than Dr. Crusher. I don't know if it was down to the writing or the performance but Pulaski is one of the best parts of season 2 and I would have been happy to see her character continue....

I watched that one last night and had the same thought - she's been the face of nonacceptance towards Data and although Bruce Maddox is far more extreme in his views it seemed like a waste of her character building.

That said, they'd already shoehorned in a Guinan scene so I don't know where they'd find the time.

Deebster ,
@Deebster@programming.dev avatar

I was referring to this trivia:

Picard's scene with Guinan was not in the original script. Melinda M. Snodgrass was told that they needed a "Ten-Forward" scene to accommodate Whoopi Goldberg coming in that week.

I took it as true, although I had a quick go at finding where this claim came from and am drawing a blank

Ah, the major system. I have a slightly different version: 1 is L, 5 is f/v (FiVe) and 8 is ch/J. Sun, sci-fi, lichee maybe.

A fun article, and I really like the idea of pataphysics. I've klnown of SCP for a long time but I've never delved into it - it seems more bottomless than TVTropes, and I've spent/wasted enough time there already!

This is a great read, particularly the points about balance.

My phone's camera only has the thirds grid, unfortunately, although I had an older app that used to have a few options (but not dynamic symmetry grid).

Are you informed about what they're using AI for? One example is in-browser translations, which allows it to work offline and be privacy-respecting (no calls to Google, etc).

Deebster ,
@Deebster@programming.dev avatar

Are you saying you've disabled searching from the address bar and instead load up whatever.com and then type your search into there? I don't understand what you think you're gaining by enforcing this extra step.

Deebster ,
@Deebster@programming.dev avatar

Why should it be relegated to a plug-in? It is a feature everyone would find useful because no-one speaks every language. Also, since Chrome has this feature, new users would expect to have it work without having to research which plug-in to use.

You might not want to use it, but some people don't use Firefox bookmarks and you don't hear them demanding that bookmarks be moved to a plug-in. It's been a very long time since a browser was solely an HTML renderer, and while people were also against CSS and scripting at first, we've moved on.

"AI" has been used for many things for many years. The fact that the news is full of machine learning and generative AI doesn't mean that it's sensible to condemn anything using it.

You have other options. You can use the separate search box. You can use smart keywords to only trigger searches when you want.

For me it’s more like
/wɒts ʌp? wɒz dʌg gənə kʌm? dʌg lʌvz bɹʌnʧ. nɜːʔɜː dʌgz stʌk kʌz ɒv ə tʌnəl əbstɹʌkʃən. ə tɹʌk dʌmpt ə tʌn ɒv ʌnjənz. əχ./

(Gimsonian, anyway, I like the newer, more logical style that would have nurse be /nəːs/)

@Deebster@programming.dev avatar

Which is why we shouldn’t have phonetic spelling!

I hope the Orville manages to get a fourth season, that often felt like the most Trek of all of what was airing.

These are all short words full of the most common letters, so will make designing crosswords easier because they’ll be useful “crossers”.

Deebster OP ,
@Deebster@programming.dev avatar

I assume it’s just an example of how to create new topical words since it’s a lot easier to name an album than to get a word well-known enough to be eligible for the dictionary.

The artists all seem to be big names so I assume it’s their popularity rather than any history of quirky album names that’s decided the list.

Deebster OP ,
@Deebster@programming.dev avatar

I only do the cryptics myself - I like that you can be confident you have the right answer without waiting for the crossers to check your guess.

I think at the end he forgot he was meant to get a person round (dead or alive). I guess you could cremate the person before beginning and maglev the remains round, as long as you can argue that it’s still a person (minus all the water, anyway).

When I saw this I thought this was an old one, but not at all. Was there a similar one before? Or has someone else done this joke already?

Occasionally I’ve needed this site and generally it’s helpful, but I don’t think anyone looking for an explanation would leave less confused after plowing through all that.

In a way, Tasha Yar's fate actually worked out really well for the series

I don’t know whether this is an unpopular opinion or not but I actually think that the way Tasha Yar died gave the show much higher stakes throughout it’s entire run. Here is the chief security officer, main bridge crew, tragic back story, potential love interest for the robot character just slapped down by the monster of...

Deebster ,
@Deebster@programming.dev avatar

Soap-opera-ish is completely right - killing off a character is meaningless if you establish your writers will stoop to a fakeout or a never before mentioned sibling/twin (or clone or mirror universe version, since it’s sci-fi).

The Higgs boson isn’t an atom like plutonium, it’s “further down”. I think of it in levels:

  • atoms, which are made up of
  • electrons “orbiting” the nucleus, the nucleus being made up of protons and neutrons. In turn, protons and neutrons are made up of
  • quarks

Quarks are a kind of elementary particle called fermions, which are at the same level as bosons (and electrons). Down here it’s all weird and quantum but in an oversimplified nutshell, it’s not so much that they physically exist as that in the maths* we can treat them as existing which makes it easier to think about.

  • of the physics models we use

I’m a computer scientist, not a real scientist, so I stand ready to be corrected by those more knowledgable.

edit: @SzethFriendOfNimi is more knowledgable and helped me fix this up a bit.

Deebster ,

That’s true… kinda makes a mess of my simple model 😅

I’ll edit in your correction, thanks.

greebled

I had to look up what you meant - I know greebles as the invisible foes/prey that cats see.

Episode Discussion | Star Trek: Lower Decks | 4x09 "The Inner Fight"

LoglineWho knows? They never released one. Edit: They finally released one - how novel to release the actual episode first! Captain Freeman assigns the Lower Deckers an overly safe mission to try and keep a self-destructive Mariner out of danger....

The he’s a puppet misunderstanding reminded me of a similar scene in The Big Lebowski.
