LoglineAn accident with an experimental quantum probability field causes everyone on the USS Enterprise to break uncontrollably into song, but the real danger is that the field is expanding and beginning to impact other ships—allies and enemies alike....
I’d disagree that all the 90s series were too serious, they all took time out for more wacky stuff but they were hidden in 24 episode or more series. DS9 for example had loads of Ferangi family sitcom stuff, the bond episode, the baseball one, the heist, worfs wedding, all the mirror universe episodes, the TOS crossover, etc all within the backdrop of the bajoran restoration and then the dominion War.
I was pretty sure they were going to nail this as soon as it was announced. Treks always played around with music and characters with musical aptitude so this was inevitable eventually.
I’m not really a musical fan unless it’s something I’m already interested in like this or, say, Pick of Destiny, thought this was great though, simple sci-fi justification, then all in on the concept. Thought the songs and “musical rules” were a good way of packing an episode with dense character work across the whole cast in an era when you only have ten episodes a year to play with.
It’s funny to think that the return of Trek in 2016 had Klingons eating captured Federation officers and Starfleet commiting war crimes out the gate in the first episode and now we’re getting an animated comedy series and musical episodes. Trek shouldn’t be afraid to be a bit silly and camp sometimes and I’m glad it’s free to be again.
Yeah, they used the songs well to pack huge amounts of character work into one episode for most of the cast. Clever move in a ten episode a year TV landscape.
I’m very much looking forward to the musical episode. When Buffy did a musical it was a nice change of pace and a lot of fun. I’m hoping for much the same from SNW’s musical.
Quite so actually. Trek has always had music as an element, whether than be Spock’s lute, the Enterprise-D crews stuffy classical obsession, the DS9 crews lounge music, Seven and the Doctors singing lessons in Voy, Mariner and Tendis shared love for Klingon hardcore punk, etc. A full episode seems like it was inevitable.
A few years ago Dan Abnett managed to pull of a musical issue of his gritty space western comic Lawless set in the Judge Dredd universe, complete with a recorded cast track to listen to while reading. If that worked, Trek can totally do it.
Title. I like engaging with Trek content, but i haven’t watched most of the new content and would like to avoid spoilers, which seems difficult especially regarding SNW when subscribed here. Feels like there is half a dozen posts about it every day....
I think you’re going to have an issue in that the kind of people who come online to discuss a show are also the kind of people to consume all new entries ASAP after their release.
I am the kind of person who enjoys “big weird” scifi like Stanisław Lem. Stories about trying to relate to and find common ground with something so alien that the prospect of even understanding is basically hopeless. Star Trek usually doesn’t do stories that, which makes sense as it often uses alien races as allegories or...
Dr Who’s visual continuity on the other hand is pretty strong when bringing back old creatures. Daleks still look like they did in 1965, the Sontarians as they did in 1973, the Zygons as they did in 1975, etc. The only race that got a major change was the Cybermen which was explained by being an alternative universe version. Even they eventually cycled round to their original 1966 look by the end of Capaldis era.
I tried an issue or two of Squirrel Girl and absolutely hated it. I read his recent Secret Invasion and Fantastic Four and it’s like a completely different writer.
My biggest complaint with Live Action Trek vs the two Animation shows is that they seem obsessed with giving us a black ship on a black background. It’s nice to be given a reprieve, even if for only one episode.
I’ve never understood the complaints about lighting on the new treks. We’re watching on big HDR enabled screens now, the lighting is appropriate for them.
If say I’ve upgraded at least every five years since having my own place and a living room to put it in. I do do a lot of gaming though so having all the latest features are important to me. That being said my parents seem to upgrade theirs as often now.
If you’re not, it’s time to upgrade. The rest of us shouldn’t get a subpar product because some people aren’t up to date. I mean, TOS was partly designed to help sell colour televisions back in the day, being on the forefront of tech is part of the franchise.
How is using all the top level technology available to the visual medium “shit” production and not good production?
Even back to the days of TOS Trek was designed to look better on colour TVs when not everyone had them. Lo and behold, we all eventually moved over to colour.
There has to be a certain level of expectation on the consumer to keep their equipment up to date and to design for the best available otherwise things would just stagnate.
I can’t speak to the compression on P+ as I’m in the UK so most new Trek is on Netflix, Amazon or the high seas for me and I haven’t noticed much blocking it artifacts even on a 65 inch screen.
I think I optimal viewing conditions are the biggest issue. People who don’t know how to set up and calibrate their TV or watch on an inappropriate device like a laptop, tablet or phone.
I’m not surprised directors like Lynch and Nolan get annoyed. They put all the works into making the best cinema experience, then people ruin it by leaving motion-clarity on on their TV or watching on a six inch screen with tinny headphones on the way to work.
Then they have no right to moan if they can’t watch the newest content properly which is made for the latest tech. No one expects a PS5 game to run on their NES just because they didn’t want to upgrade do they?
Not being able to afford is a different issue, but theres always been people who can’t afford the latest and greatest, that’s life. No reason to hold things back for everyone else due to that.
LoglineAn accident while investigating a time portal sends Ensigns Beckett Mariner and Bradward Boimler through time from the 24th century, and Captain Pike and his crew must get them back where they belong before they can alter the timeline....
To be fair, since it’s been on it got an Easter egg reference in the Kelvin-verse and has been mentioned or referenced in most of the new shows from S1 of Dis on. Not only did they name drop Archer in that, they actually expanded on the MU episodes of Ent.
That was amazing, on par with Trials and Tribble-ations for a crossover. Loved how well they integrated Boimler and Mariner without losing any of the character as LD has presented them.
Dan Abbnett managed to pull of a musical issue of his comic Lawless, a gritty space western set in the Judge Dreed-verse, with a recorded soundtrack to listen to while reading and it was dope. I reckon SNW can pull it off.
I’m actually not a huge musical fan, but I do enjoy it when it’s worked into something I already enjoy like Trek, as long as the song writing is good, I’m hyped.
Personally, I think SNW doing all this stuff is more Trek than we’ve seen in a while. Most inventive and creative live action series since Enterprise ended.

I am really struggling to get excited about a Trek entry for the first time in my life with this one.
Ironically, I’ve always thought a S31 show could work if handled like “Tinker, Taylor, Soldier, Spy” in space. However how they handled it in Dis makes me think this will be Mission Impossible in space and that doesn’t sound appealing to me.
I saw someone on Reddit wondering why the community was so sure of Trek going dark again with Paramount not doing so well financially. Seeing the response was unfortunate as most people feel that it might be a bad time for Trek. And I guess it makes sense with the Hollywood strikes as well....
I’ve managed to find all of SNW, Prodigy and Discovery as Torrents as far as I’m in the UK and refuse to pay for P+ when half the content is still on Netflix and Amazon.
Makes sense. I feel like Trek fans keeps getting screwed over with Cons lately though. Remember the con where they told the UK Discovery was still on Netflix only to pull it a few days later?

For those who watched DS9 during its first airings, did it seem odd to you that Vic Fontaine/James Darren sang entire songs in the later seasons of DS9?...
That’s why I love Strange New Worlds and Lower Decks at the moment. They’ve brought back the episodic take that made Trek work for five series.
Lower Decks is the most impressive. The fact that they manage to tell a full TNG era type story, with no characters feeling left out including the support cast, in half an hour a time is masterful.
Even in a real war civilian life continues even if you’re close to the war zone and soldiers are cycled on and off the front lines. Therefore it’s perfectly believable for the DS9 crew to be off duty and having a pint at Vic’s between missions.
What we used to call a “bottle episode” younger people now call “filler” as they’ve grown up in a world where shows are designed to be binged as a whole in a few days, not slowly eased out over 24 weeks of the year.
I mean. I prefered DS9s use of swing and lounge to TNGs obsession with poetry, classical and opera music. Glad we’ve moved past that now and we’re getting stuff like Klingon punk in lower decks
