I hate to say it, because I've been really pleased with kbin for the most part. I've liked being able to dip my toes into the Mastodon side without yet another account; I like the interface; and my interactions with Ernest have been nothing but pleasant. I certainly hope all is well with him personally. But whether it's legitimate medical issues or undisclosed burnout, the instance and platform are struggling.

The good thing is that everything has been federating and most of us have been interacting with Lemmy and mbin users daily anyway; it's "just" a loss of fake internet points and comment history to move. I'm trying to put that off, but the mobile site/pwa is only okay, API rollout has stalled (meaning app development has stalled as well), admin activities can't happen with Ernest, and technical issues with the instance are becoming more common.

I think the Reddit API mini-exodus last year hit at that exact "sweet" spot, in terms of numbers and point in kbin development, where one dev/admin could almost keep up with it, but not quite. Suddenly this thing he was noodling with to combine Lemmy and Mastodon has thousands of people wanting it to be production ready. I don't begrudge him anything even if it is just burnout, but if that is the case then maybe it's time to bless mbin as a successor and start migrating people off kbin.social or find someone else to admin it and ugrade it to mbin. Ernest has built up a ton of goodwill; if he's done, then he's done (and of course, if he's ill then he's ill). Who among us could stand up a minimum viable product of a reddit clone and admin two instances? Not me, that's for sure.

Edit: I checked, and Ernest's Polish-language instance karab.in is completely down right now.

We have all been very lucky that these open source projects are there as an alternative, and there are ways Ernest can step back if being the sole PM of a sprawling social network project isn't good for him. I just don't want it to happen in a way where people are left with a bad taste in their mouths for the Fediverse or him personally.

I agree completely with you about the state of kbin and what it means for Ernest: if it's become too much for him, or he has medical issues, just ask for help.
That said, I don't know what to say about switching to mbin: I don't know what caused the split, and honestly the 2-3 threads by some noisy bozos going "KAY GUYS KBIN'S DEAD, YOU'RE ALL INVITED ON MBIN" don't exactly make me wanna rush there.

FfaerieOxide ,
@FfaerieOxide@kbin.social avatar

surely there is more than one admin who can moderate the instance?

From what I understand Ernest is slow to trust and doesn't like sharing responsibility.

Nice!

They totally miss that kbin federates with lemmy and mastodon whereas Lemmy doesn’t microblog. Also, the list 4chan as a Reddit alternative and 4chan is a cesspool.

Lemmylefty ,
@Lemmylefty@lemmy.world avatar

Offering 4chan up as an alternative to Reddit is like taking your cheat day from Doritos and ice cream to putting pubes you got from a Taco Bell toilet in your crack pipe.

Lemmy is a community led content aggregator similar Reddit. Mastodon is a microblogging platform similar to twitter.

Kbin combines the functionality of both and federates with both. Think of it as twidder or rettit. Insert a smash up yourself.

Lemmy was created by a couple pro-China pro-Putin “communists” and one of them is full on genocide of Uyghurs is not happening because they do not consider them people.

Kbin was created by someone who wanted a place for friends.

Do with that information what you will.

Well we do need somewhere for the creeps and such to go other than here, so yeah.

It’s good to see Lemmy getting some love, athough I did get a chuckle at the “this whole fediverse concept is so hard to get your head around” stuff. They are so used to being fed what the algorithm delivers that they are lost without it. It’s so touchingly Orwellian.

livus ,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

I'm talking to you from kbin.social right now.

It's like a lemmy but with some different features. Like, I can read and interact with mastodon users a bit from here as well.

1chemistdown ,
@1chemistdown@kbin.social avatar

Damn! I cannot get that imagery out of my mind; it’s suddenly seared onto my minds eye.

Well done

“this whole fediverse concept is so hard to get your head around”

Respectfully, I think this is because join-lemmy.org is confusing. Here are the simple instructions I give people:

  1. Go to https://kbin.social/ and start reading.
  2. If you want to join, click "Log In" at the top, and then "Register"

Everything else they can figure out as they go along.

lol

cheese_greater ,

You certainly paint quite a picture

xc2215x ,

Makes sense since those are the two best alternatives.

Oliper202020 ,

Well its definitely not wrong though

They included beehaw. But not as a lemmy instance. Facepalm

fearout ,
@fearout@kbin.social avatar

No mention of kbin either

fearout ,
@fearout@kbin.social avatar

Yeah, not mentioning even a single instance when writing about Fediverse is pretty shit journalism. I was expecting something much worse after reading your preparation steps though :) At least factually it’s not really incorrect.

Daily reminder that /kbin apparently doesn't exist and that the kbin.social in my username is just a hallucination.

The mod's response to Reddit, in case people don't want to go there:

According to them, your favourite subreddits going NSFW is too much for you to understand. The infamous Mod Code of Conduct messaged us, demanding we switch back, because “you’re likely confused by all the NSFW content you’ve been seeing”.

They didn’t allow us to reply, so we couldn’t explain that this is a subreddit for an 18+ game, nor has any of our content changed. This subreddit should have been NSFW already, but we’d never thought to change it until recently.

Until we change it back we’re in violation of Reddit’s sitewide rules. We’re not going to change it back, because this is a sexually explicit game, and also fuck them.

If we’re removed at least we got to go out on an fantastically fun flair event (don’t worry this won’t stop your flair from being added I promise), and if this sub changes back from NSFW then you know you’re no longer in control of it.

Rest assured; we have 77 fans all over Reddit, with r/lowsodiumcyberpunk being a decent fall back. We’ve never worked together on anything, but we’ve made an effort to stay on good terms with one another, and I trust them to take care of you all.

Edit: this has hit r/all choombas so assume there are a lot of people here just to feed on the drama

Some time after posting this here, the mods added a second edit:

Edit: since hitting r/all there have been a bunch of accounts created in the last month attacking us and defending Reddit admins with a vigour I’ve never seen before. That seems suspicious, at the very least

So it seems that someone (probably Reddit themselves) caught wind of this and attempted to astroturf it with bots... Now who's recently been caught doing that?

See c4's post below for a Teddit link of the whole thread: https://kbin.social/m/RedditMigration/t/144077/Reddit-threatens-the-mods-of-r-CyberpunkGame-the-main-subreddit-for#entry-comment-559801

Reddit has died and its corpse has been fitted over an automaton.

fivezero OP ,
@fivezero@lemmy.world avatar

Agreed. For years I had truly (and naively) believed that Reddit, despite their prior blunders with which we are now all mostly familiar, would maintain an acceptable level of decency and never push things so far as alienate their core userbase. Shot themselves squarely in the foot on this one I think, as their recent changes affect so many.

Hypx ,
@Hypx@kbin.social avatar

It's truly amazing. Even people who knew that Reddit was destined to fail someday, wouldn't have predict it happening so fast.
