UAW strike Day 4: GM threatens to send 2,000 workers home, Ford cuts 600 jobs ( www.npr.org )

Union strategy: 13,000 autoworkers at the three Midwest plants, about 9% of the unionized workforce at the Big Three automakers, were the first to walk off the job. Now, more workers are temporarily out of work as the automakers are asking hundreds of non-striking workers not to show up to work....

Looking at it, the Stand up strike is a smart move. By the companies inevitably having to lay off workers or lockout plants, adds to the number of people striking for the UAW, who will be able to keep people on strike pay longer from their fund.

You could be distinguished like this guy in a UK Rail Accident report.

The driver was on his 59th hour of work that week in the final hours of his 12-hour night shift. Let’s not encourage overworking, in most jobs you won’t be that much more productive anyway, and in others you run the risk of making potentially fatal mistakes. (Luckily he made it out fine.)

Mhm, better hours, better pay would mean better drivers and more people willing to work in that industry.

In Ontario Canada it’s up to 13 hrs driving, 14 hours on-duty and 10 hrs off-duty with 8 hour breaks, and unloading doesn’t count as off-duty. Maximum 70 hrs in 7 days, or 120 hrs in 14 days depending on carrier. Not much better.

Greater availability and affordability of unhealthier, more processed foods filled with carbs and fats and devoid of other nutrients. Car culture that discourages natural amounts of walking in a daily routine. Sugar, caffeine and alcohol addictions with advertisers preying on people vulnerable to addiction of every kind.

Yeah I’m mostly talking about Sodas like pepsi, and but a big one is also colourful energy drinks like Redbull, Monster and Prime. Tons of ad money and sponsorships being thrown on these very unhealthy drinks.

On the coffee side, Tis the Pumpkin Spice Latte season from you-know-which chain. A 16oz cup of that has 9 grams(45% recommended DV) of saturated fats, and 50g of sugar. A 16oz Coca-Cola bottle contains a very similar amount of sugar at 52g.

Regular coffee and tea isn’t bad but caffeine has to still be taken in moderation.

In public I use the urinal or sit down. At home I sit down. Sometimes peeing makes me want to shit anyway even if I wasn’t planning to originally.

I skimmed the article but to answer the titular question, men would rather be light on details describing a previous marriage/relationship or keep it a secret altogether, because it would earn them stigma from both men and women around them.

A commonly ingrained idea of marriage that’s learned and in culture is that marriage is a perpetual vow/promise, so re-marrying is considered a breach of trust in some circles. How could one be faithful to their new partner through thick and thin if they were wrung through the process of divorce, amicable or not?, would be the thought process behind these beliefs. I don’t have a religious view of marriage, but if I must break an eternal vow then I’d better have a darn good reason for myself as well. Just my own thoughts on this, I’m open to other opinions.

The article later goes into the inequality of gender roles in a relationship when it comes to running a home. To that, I say that people have to be more accepting, and society has to be more compatible with allowing stay-at-home dads with a mother as the breadwinner.

On one hand is the obvious staring and occasional questioning that happens when a dad brings their child alone somewhere. I know there is some opposition to this, but childcaring dads should be cheered on and encouraged, in a good-natured and not belittling manner.

Second is the economic aspect. With how unaffordable things are, many parents have to both be employed to raise a kid. That’s not enough to really allow childcare to become a gender-neutral concept, as existing pay inequality/glass ceiling often makes it more likely for the mom to give up income to care for the child. Not only that, paternal leave is virtually non-existent in the USA, further perpetuating a gender gap when it comes to child-rearing. Better financial freedom and protections for labour will also advance the cause of gender equality.

The only thing you would really stand to lose from selling then buying from within the TFSA vs. transferring directly (in-kind) is the difference between price when that happens and transactions fees that you pay for each. (If you pay $0 in fees then it’s not that big of a difference). And you would need to have or move in the right amount of cash first, if your broker gives you back your funds back slowly.

The advantages with having stock in TFSA is you pay no tax if it grows, but you get no tax break if it shrinks.

I haven’t heard of Foreign Transaction Fee before, is that different than (and placed on top of) the Foreign Exchange Fee/Spread of anywhere between 1.5% and 5%?

My card has no Foreign Transaction Fees (I think), because I only am charged fees by ATMs, and when I by games off Steam I pay in CAD and the location is in Seattle (but my card is Canadian).

Some examples from my banking app and a random statement of mine (the first one was when I bought BG3 lol)…

Steam charges in CAD but the reported location is in Hamburg (Germany) for one of the statements and SEATTLEDE for the other. A 2.5% fee the converted CAD amount applies for transactions in foreign currency, I confirmed with my bank.

Rentlar ,

maybe there’s a currency conversion fee but no foreign transaction fee

Yes, it’s like that to my understanding… No separate line items and $0 on the fees charged section of my statement.

Anyways I didn’t know about foreign transaction fees that can be charged even in your home currency, so it was very enlightening, thank you!

That’s what made me a Chapman’s Ice Cream fan (in Canada) because of how they treated their workers during the pandemic. They gave a 2 dollar raise during the pandemic, making it permanent where so many other companies hoped it would be temporary, then a year later gave a $1 raise to fully vaccinated people, then six months later matched that for everyone else. That’s how, as management you show your workers how valuable they are.

Hey! Anybody looking for that “deep state”? (pointing) it’s right here!

Rentlar ,

It’s a difficult question and I’m glad the author came clear with the fact they were wrestling with the notion, “does exemplifying good qualities of men inherently take it away from women and others?”

Now in the case where “What about men?” is brought into discussion about women’s rights and struggles, often the intent is to detract the conversation away, which is demeaning. In other contexts, I think it deserves more discussion.
