I don't think I have that one, but I have a bunch of them! They're my prized possessions and it's such a delight to hang them up every Christmas :D

[Solved] Trees supposedly take 30 years *before* they absorb CO₂. Why?

I often hear science-adjacent folks stating that a tree needs to be 30 years old before it starts absorbing CO₂, usually paired with the statement that it’s therefore pointless to start planting tons of trees now for slowing climate change....

This site: https://8billiontrees.com/carbon-offsets-credits/carbon-ecological-footprint-calculators/how-much-carbon-does-a-tree-capture/

Has a little calculator you can play around with to see how much carbon is captured by a tree based on various factors.

I've seen similar errors before. It's referring to what the xorg server considers to be "monitor 0". Maybe your xorg.conf file has an error in it, or perhaps that monitor is unplugged? If you're running an NVIDIA card, you can run sudo nvidia-xconfig for it to overwrite your xorg.conf file which is in /etc/X11 on my machine, note that the X in X11 is capitalized.

Pretty unrelated, but I just wanted to say that I love how bash scripting uses if to open an if statement and fi to close it... makes me giggle every time lol

Spotube is pretty good. You login through Spotify and it uses the Spotify API to import all your playlists and recommendations. It does have a few flaws, but overall, it's a better experience than the Spotify app imo.

You can also get Spotube on the Google Play store and other stores I'm assuming. Or you can get it from F-Droid which is a free and open source alternative to the play store.

I'd just like to add The Orville to the list, somewhere after either TNG or DS9. Could also maybe add Galaxy Quest to the list for the TNG vibes.

Blackhole Warfare Strategy ( kbin.social )

So this is something that's rumbled around in my head for a while and I'd like to see if I can get an answer here but I'm not sure I can word it correctly. Quick disclaimer, this is all 'as I understand it' not factual or even researched by any means so it may all just be a bunch of bullshit. Essentially the questionI have is...

ShaunaTheDead ,
@ShaunaTheDead@kbin.social avatar

Time moving slower inside a black hole's gravitational field would have the opposite effect from what you're thinking. Like in the movie Interstellar, when they go down to the water planet they say "one hour on this planet is equivalent to 7 years on Earth".

So any civilization within a black hole's gravity well would actually be at a huge disadvantage and have considerably less time to prepare.

I realized why I enjoy Linux so much and why I've stuck with it all these years (slight vent)... ( kbin.social )

In a world where nothing seems to work anymore, especially anything related to tech and/or customer service, getting on my laptop running Linux Mint just feels like a breath of fresh air. And that goes for just about any distro. It's nice to have something that works as it should and doesn't seem to go out of its way to cause...

ShaunaTheDead ,

Hell yeah! I haven't tried Mint in awhile, it was my first foray into a Linux distro and I wasn't quite ready at the time, mostly because gaming on Linux wasn't where I needed it to be. It sure was a beautiful distro though!

I love that Linux has taught me how to debug programs and since open source is more common in Linux environments, if there's a problem then I can fix it myself rather than waiting for the developers to patch it.

Oh yeah, and PC Express and all the groceries stores are such bullshit! Galen Weston... heads (of lettuce probably) will roll!

There's a few, but I really like Gnome Screen Recorder if you're using a gnome-based distro. I've also used Peek before which I believe has shortcuts as you said. To install Peek if you don't have the repository on your distro.

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:peek-developers/stable
sudo apt update
sudo apt install peek

I'm not super familiar with Endeavour but are you sure your graphics card drivers are installed correctly? Looks like Endeavour gives you a command line program called Nvidia installer. You can also usually run "nvidia-smi" in terminal normally to check if they're working.

Also, are you on a laptop that uses integrated graphics? Maybe try switching to your dedicated NVidia graphics card.

And I'm seeing that Endeavour lets you choose which desktop environment you run, try switching to another desktop environment like Gnome or Cinnamon.

Edit: Maybe this post will help? https://blender.stackexchange.com/questions/233674/rtx-3090-unsupported-graphics-card-or-driver-opengl-3-3-or-higher-recquired/233677#233677

Looks like you might be able to select which video card takes priority in the Nvidia Control Panel which you should be able to get to by running "nvidia-settings" in the command line.

Try purging your graphics driver. I think Arch based distros use pacman and I'm more familiar with apt so I'm not sure how to do that. Purge the driver and the configurations and try installing the 525 version of the driver and see if that fixes anything.

It's a bit more easily understood if you look at a space-time diagram, but essentially it kind of boils down to the speed of an object through space and the speed of an object through time are related and they must add up to 1. So if you're traveling at 50% the speed of light through space, then you're traveling at 50% the speed through time compared to an object at rest. So if you're traveling at 100% the speed of light through space, you're traveling at 0% through time, or not at all.

I found this channel (Science Asylum) really helpful in explaining things very simply. He uses space-time diagrams in this video to explain how gravity is an emergent property of time and how the two are linked together.
