For those who watched DS9 during its first airings, did it seem odd to you that Vic Fontaine/James Darren sang entire songs in the later seasons of DS9?...
Sinatra and ‘lounge music’ made a big comeback in the nineties with younger people then in their early twenties, that would Gen X, not the boomers.
Gen X thought the late 50s and early 60s were interesting 30 years later.
The Bond revival was also in full swing with that age group too, which is why we got Bashir’s Bond hijinks combined with lounge culture.
James Darren was the real deal as a lounge singer. His career was trending upwards again during the show because of the lounge culture trend.
I’m also going to make a pitch for holodeck/holosuite episodes. I would absolutely argue that in the 90s they weren’t filler at all.
They aren’t as interesting now because they are too close to technology that we use everyday. That’s likely why we aren’t seeing Holodeck episodes in the same way in the new era.
While virtual reality, and shared role playing games are deeply established now through massively multiplayer games and discord, Star Trek in the 90s was actually doing its s job as a science fiction show imagining what people could do with VR and what could go wrong.
Taking it back to TOS, a shore leave planet that turned out to have interactive holographic characters and an operating system gone wrong wasn’t a trope, it was an entirely new concept. More, it built on the psychological thriller concept of imaginary things becoming real and dangerous that was at the core of The Cage and the MGM movie Forbidden Planet that inspired Roddenberry.
In both the Berman era and in TOS, virtual reality shows were a key way to explore character development, relationships and team development within the ensemble of characters.
DS9 ‘Only a Paper Moon’ is a deep dive into withdrawal from reality due to trauma. I would say it may not be as successful now because it’s too on the nose and less allegorical given the way gaming and VR are used by many with trauma and anxiety as coping mechanisms.
It reinforces that Parrot’s broader methodology is fairly predictive of what Nielsen will get from its sampling of streaming through television boxes.
Which begs the question: if Parrot isn’t so far off from actual viewship data, and knowing Parrot had Prodigy’s 2022 demand in second place of all Paramount+ digital animated originals (just behind Lower Decks), why did Paramount pull Prodigy?
It’s great to see Trek shows, actors and EPs getting nominated, but this particular set of nominations are somewhat disquieting when we don’t see Picard picking up nominations from others.
It’s challenging to keep all these award nominations in context.
There are many nomination lists coming out at this time of year, but not are equally prestigious and some have been the subject of criticism and controversy over the composition of their boards and questions about inappropriate influence.
This one, the Hollywood Critics Association is often described as the most influenced by the local LA entertainment business relationships if I recall correctly. In 2022, many members resigned amid allegations of finances and voting .
LoglineA shuttle accident leads to Spock’s Vulcan DNA being removed by aliens, making him fully human and completely unprepared to face T’Pring’s family during an important ceremonial dinner....
You’re fortunate to have missed the complaints elsewhere then. It really seems to be an episode that has very strong reactions, but isn’t outright controversial.
The reaction here seems overwhelmingly positive. Even the fans on old Trek BBS is mostly giving the episode high marks.
But the review by Trek tie-in author Keith Di Candido at Tor is quite critical, and that group of commentators seem largely to have followed.
The old sub has more than the usual quotient of nitpicks, but also enthusiasts.
Trek Movie is one of the few that takes the middle ground saying the episode ‘misses its mark’.
This fall I’m planning to watch the Star Trek TOS movies with some friends on discord, as well as a few episodes of TOS/TAS to introduce the characters/setting/etc. So basically I’m searching for recommendations for episodes to watch...
I love TAS and believe all of its episodes are worth watching at least once.
Yesteryear is iconic and essential Spock and Guardian of Forever context but there’s a lot to take in.
TAS has some episodes that may not be the best, but definitely provide many firsts, and as such are an important bridge between TOS and TNG other later extensions of the franchise. So, here’s my list of ‘you really should see them’ episodes and why.
The Lorelei Syndrome puts Uhura in command, undoing the damage of TOS Turnabout Intruder ;
More Trouble, More Tribbles is a ‘must see’ part of the Tribbles trilogy with the TOS and DS9 a episodes;
The Time Trap - lays a foundation for the pocket universe trope;
The Slaver Weapon - it’s by Larry Niven and brings his Kzinti into the franchise, which only Starfleet Battles game upheld until they reappear in Lower Decks;
The Practical Joker introduces the Rec Room, precursor of the Holodeck, and introduces the ‘space anomaly causes Holodeck malfunction’ trope, with hijinks naturally.
The Counterclock Incident - Robert April and time running backwards, again not the best but one not to be missed.
So pleased to see Mia Kirshner back as Amanda Grayson.
While Pelia isn’t mentioned, we do know that Pelia and Amanda have a significant connection given that Amanda was one of the first people she revealed her true identity to.
I prefer to use this instance as my primary, but I’ve noticed a lot of missing comments/votes/etc on posts from other instances. I’ll switch between this account and one on lemmy.world or Lemm.ee and notice that I’m not seeing all the activity. Does anyone know why?...
Have you checked your language settings on this instance?
You need to at minimum select BOTH English and Undetermined in your profile on this instance, and any other language that you might wish to see on other instances.
I have a few, my fav is Jessie Gender, who gives insightful reviews but doesnt shy away from criticism of Trek. I also like how she looks at things from a gender critical angle, which is something few peoppe think about. Sean Ferrick is another cool one, as are the guys from Trekyards who are more focussed on tech and ships. Who...
I often disagree , but I find the reviews by Treklit author Keith Di Candido on TOR interesting, and the comments participation of another author Christopher L Bennet interesting to follow. Both know the history of onscreen canon very well and have spent a lot of time working around it as tie-in writers. It’s good to see their takes and their debates.
I agree that Jessie Gender has some solid reviews as well.
As for most of the rest, the reviews of Picard season three have really made me reassess who I find worth my time to pay attention to. Many revealed themselves to be just locked in a a gatekeeping idea that 90s Berman Trek is the only ‘real’ Trek and it’s not something I want to give my views to.
That is, some reviewers whom I had considered sometimes tough but balanced, seemed to turn off any criticism of Picard season three as the nostalgic hits rolled out. Many of the same flaws they had repeatedly criticized in Discovery or earlier seasons of Picard were given a complete pass. And they are back being hypercritical of SNW now.
As someone who eventually stopped supporting the 80s fanzines run by TOS fans that couldn’t accept TNG was its own different thing, I feel the same way about Berman-era fans who are now gatekeeping what Trek can evolve to.
Nickelodeon has had an overall decline in viewership of 70% since 2017, around 25% since the pandemic.
Kids have stopped watching linear television.
Prodigy was doing ok relative to other Nickelodeon offerings, but not great for such an expensive show. Weekly and monthly viewership was only 170k in 2022 according to Nielsen.
Especially as it gets back to the mid 20th century thought experiments around how the mind functions, but informed my more current understanding of memory, cognitive function and emotion.
I wasn’t quite sure the balance of the scenes was what it could have been, but it was good to see all of the main cast having their moments. I was nonetheless frustrated that Number One was quickly sidelined once again.
Also I was uncomfortable with how far Pike was willing to go in his aggression in order to get information from Zack. I believe we’re supposed to feel that, but it did feel that it was pushed just that moment longer to drive home the point that Pike’s deep ethics are what keeps him in check, not his emotions. It also tracks with his anger and how he even used it to break the thrall of the Talosians in The Cage.
But overall, I liked it. It’s a deeper and more challenging episode than it may seem on the surface, first watch. I suspect it will be one that stands up over a longer horizon.
Yes, it’s a direct plot reference to the backstory for The Cage.
I was responding to the comment that it’s like TNG psychological episodes, when I see it as in the tradition of Forbidden Planet where an unknown technology or phenomenon is changing brain function so that subconscious or deep behaviours are revealed.
We do know that the first landing went wildly wrong quickly. It’s possible that the judgement and short term memories of Pike and Spock of that landing were affected by more than trauma and shock.
There was individual variation in how rapidly the effects presented. We saw that La’an experienced some early tinnitus shortly after the shuttle landed.
On the ship, Spock wasn’t necessarily correct in his inference given he was already experiencing some cognitive impairment by that point.
This is the kind of thing I was very much hoping to see in this show. I’m almost as excited to see Rigel VII as I was to see Talos IV again in Discovery ‘If Memory Serves.’
I am definitely in the contingent that enjoys The Cage more than The Menagerie. I’ve been hoping that the dangling threads of that pilot would be woven back into new stories from the time I saw the first cobbled together restoration of The Cage in the 80s.
Most of what works in the Star Trek movies evolve from what we know about the characters. Kirk’s love for his ship and history with the Klingons, Picard’s history with the Borg, Data’s struggle with emotions, that sort of thing....
No references to Hemmer yet this season or specific follow up to Uhura’s experience of his apparent death. We’re only at episode three however and other cat have had their moments to shine.
Shared a photo of our Kelvin D7 last week here. Looks great.
My spouse seems to want to decorate every available spot with Klingon vessels. It’s hard to argue. …. Even when extra birds of prey mysteriously appear.
Is there any equivalent to the Star Trek viewing party sub yet? I’m watching through Next Gen right now and reading through each episode’s thread afterwards is pretty enjoyable. There isn’t enough love for TOS on that sub though
It’s a matter of having enough posts and comments to have additional subs or communities.
The mod of this one @ValueSubtracted has replied to other similar questions that, as there is volume and interest, other communities (subs) can be added here.
(I previously posed the same question about establishing a Treklit or trekbooks one.)
There’s definitely and interest and an open invitation to mods of other Trek-related subreddits, to set up and find a home here.
For now, the three communities that exist cover the waterfront from more serious to humorous, with the general StarTrek one also being the meta discussion for the community.
I have noticed that all of these are still available ‘On Demand’ on BellFibe or in the Fibe app for CTV Sci-fi channel subscribers. The classic series are still in the forward schedule in Fibe.
Here’s an alternate take. Keeping in mind that La’an is a security officer trained in investigative methods.
La’an could hear the voices and footfalls of a security response team. She knew they would be there in moments.
The investigators would be looking for the gun that shot Kirk and 3 guards.
With that weapon recovered, the search would focus on the missing shooter who they would have on security cameras in the foyer.
Without the weapon, there would be another level of scrutiny, and such scrutiny might draw attention to the Noonien-Singh project that might be enough in itself to alter history.
By leaving the weapon in plain sight, with her own markered DNA on it as well as Sera’s likely-tweaked Romulan DNA, she’s left enough for the investigators to look beyond the facility for their escaped killer without actually revealing how and where she and Sera exited.
To be fair, the ceiling height on that enormous soundstage volume at Pinewood Toronto is exceptional.
We’ll miss those two-story sets when the lease is up.
You’d think Slashfilm, as an industry inward-looking site, would have done the research though. Just because it’s in Canada, doesn’t mean it’s not publicly available information. Or, they could have asked. Makes me more cautious on their basic journalistic standards.
It’s at Pinewood on the old Portlands owned by the City of Toronto on the east side of the downtown core. The Pinewood complex is now minority-owned and run by the massive Bell Media. There is currently construction underway to double the size of the complex.
SNW has its soundstages at CBS Stages, and it seems the Enterprise bridge set from Discovery season 2 had to be relocated from Pinewood and rebuilt there.
CBS Stages Canada is an initiative of the two Canadian EPs working on Discovery, SNW and Starfleet Academy - Frank Siracusa and John Weber. There were articles locally in 2018 when the project launched saying that they had convinced CBS Studios to establish their own soundstages for future rather than rely on leasing.
It feels as though Dr Erin MacDonald has earned her consultant’s fee helping them sort out the physics.
We’re out of the mess of the ever-expanding manifold time that Marvel and DC have bought into.
Beyond that version of infinitely branching manifold time / multiverse being offside, basically contradicting modern physics, it creates a situation where every possibility exists so nothing our heroes do matters, and nothing ever done to fix a time incursion matters either.
Instead we see that forks in the timeline can prune other timelines. Both branches can’t continue to exist, and the river of the timeline has some fixed events (time crystals) that pin it, pull it back to its original course.
So it would take something extraordinary, even on the Trek scale of extraordinary, to create a true ongoing branch. The creation of the Kelvin universe is associated with the Romulan Supernova. Knowing now that the Romulans have been interfering with human development over centuries and using temporal agents to do it, having a major disaster to the Romulans impact human history seems like a corollary. With a major event like a sun blowing up, we can say we’ve got a threshold for creating a separate sustainable universe.
As for TNG Parallels, I still love the episode, but perhaps we could reframe it as all the short run alternate timelines. For as unlikely as it was, Worf got back to his own timeline and Enterprise. Time fought back.
The Mirror Universe is some kind of true branch that happened much earlier, such that even the physics of light are slightly different.
Kovich’s explanation of branching universes suggests that they’re not common but also that as they increasingly diverge, it becomes less and less possible to corpse over and those who do may not be able to survive.
He noted that no contact had been possible with the Mirror Universe in several centuries.
The 24th century Kelvin Universe officer who came over to the Prime Universe in the 32nd century died, as would have Georgiou. But the Kelvin Universe was close enough that he was able to cross at all.

I can’t say they were always as civil as they might be. Even in the late 80s with laserprint copies in vogue, there were folks who thought shouting everything in AllCaps was the way to get their message across.
@BROMETHIUS you may wish to check the pinned message at the top of this community.
This instance was created by the senior mods of r/startrek and r/DaystromInstitute. The original mod of r/startrek is modding here. They’re hoping to attract some of the other Star Trek subreddits to join. The invitations have been made. So far, they’ve decided to keep the number of communities to three in order to let the conversations get going.
I agree. At one point, I wondered if the EPs had wanted Cara Gee for the show.
She’s her own person now. Strong and closed like Drummer but from a very different context.
Many of us who are fans of both Trek and The Expanse have wished Trek had some of the complex strong women along the lines of the Expanse. I can’t criticize the EPs for wanting to bring that into the franchise. Now all I want is a Trek version of Avrasala.
Maybe they know that she has Pelia there to comfort her?
La’an couldn’t tell Pelia the details around Khan or the Romulan incursions, but if Pelia recognizes her and asks after the handsome young companion she has with her in the 21st century, she could at least offer comfort for his nonexistence in this presence. I doubt Pelia could see La’an with this universe’s Kirk and not put her memories together.
Key events are preserved but the details may change and slip a bit. The details can include slippage in the dates.
The 90s date was implicitly overwritten by TNG’s premiere where Roddenberry himself decided to shift WW3 to the mid 21st century.
People had head canoned the link between the Eugenics wars and WW3 out of existence, while also ignoring that TOS implied Warp was discovered in the late 20th century.
Accepting that temporal incursions alter the Prime Timeline just makes sense of events like Voyager Endgame.
As there are a significant number of unhappy redditors just now who might wish to join Lemmy but are discouraged, it would be good to confirm.
I really appreciate the simple pathway that was offered for users on r/startrek back before the subs went dark June 12th. It was a successful migration for me mostly, but I understand that there’s a largish crowd of frustrated folks who haven’t made it through.
Unfortunately these aggregator pages, including the Lemmy Fediverse Observer create the impression that the site is closed completely vs. taking reasonable precautions to ensure verifiable signups.
There was a new wave of frustrated folks looking for help on r/lemmy yesterday, mostly for lemmy.world which sounds like it was overwhelmed again, but not only that instance.
I can drop this suggestion when I see a new complaint in the megathead.
I’m mainly just on Reddit to help some of my longtime chat buddies ale the migration.
Agreed that it’s public now - in the case of up/downvoting publication is instance-dependent — and can be scraped, but as a federated instance Meta can just load it directly.
I was trying Mlem in beta through Test Flight, but it wasn’t very functional yet, despite the nice interface. (I’ve been finding just going through the browser good enough for now.)
